April Head of the Class and All-Star Kids Winners Announced

Education is one of the pillars of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ community efforts and as part of that, the organization recognizes exemplary teachers and students throughout Northeast Ohio. Each month during the regular season, the Cavs select one teacher and one student to receive the team’s Head of the Class and All-Star Kids awards, respectively.

Head of the Class recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio that make a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside of the classroom. April’s winner was Bernadette Elam, a first grade teacher at Hopkins Elementary School in Mentor, where she is loved and respected by her students, who know they can go to her for advice and encouragement. She pours her heart and soul into helping students, including organizing a fundraiser to help with medical bills for a student and their family. Ms. Elam leads a student ambassador group that pioneered a new school program, “Choose to be Kind” and also serves as a mentor to other teachers in the district.

Ms. Elam enjoyed a school visit from Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad and mascot Sir C.C., who presented her with a $500.00 donation to use towards her classroom. Ms. Elam also received tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the April 9th Cavs game, where she was honored at center court.

All-Star Kids recognizes students who set a positive example for their peers. April’s winner was Joshua Aponte, a 10th grader at Twinsburg High School in Twinsburg, where he is enrolled in honors classes and consistently achieves honor roll status. He is compassionate and empathetic and always demonstrates kindness. Joshua also raises school spirit by serving as the school’s mascot. He also volunteers at numerous school events.

Ahmaad and Moondog surprised Joshua at school to present him with tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the April 7th Cavs game, where he was honored at center court. He will also receive a pizza party for his class at a later date.
