It was crowded Thursday morning in the Advocate Center Bulls training facility when Oklahoma's Trae Young settled in to speak with reporters. Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg and basketball chief John Paxson loomed nearby. The local network sports news regulars were there, the cameras, reporters from ESPN and the NBA website. And then there was the elephant in the room.

Young, the slight in stature slick shooting point guard, naturally shifted a bit with mention of the elephant. Elephants can take the air out of a room quickly. So what would Young say to Bulls starting point guard Kris Dunn if the Bulls selected Young with the No. 7 selection in next Thursday's NBA draft?

"I mean, Kris is great player," Young stammered some. "Kris is a really good player. I mean, yeah, that's all I got to say about that. I don't know what you want me to say. He'd be my teammate, so I wouldn't tell him anything."

"I would ask him for advice," Young said. "I would ask for advice. He's played in the league. I want to know what it's like to be a rookie in the league. I want to know what he went through as a rookie, different things. I would ask him for advice."

Like whether the Bulls should select a point guard with their lottery draft when they have Dunn, who was the No. 5 pick in the 2016 NBA draft?

"Why would they take me?" Young repeated. "I don't think there's anybody like me in the draft. I think with the guys and the talent on this team, with their different abilities—we'd have athletic wings, shooters, shooting big men who pick and pop—and my ability to pass the ball and my ability to shoot the ball, (it) would make it easier for my teammates and for this team. I think it would be a great decision to pick me."

That was the correct answer, and a pretty good one.

I have no idea if the Bulls have a strong interest in Young, who led the nation at the U. of Oklahoma this season in scoring and assists. But they've only been making players available to media who seem in their selection range. And there's no reason not to take Young because they have Dunn. It's also believed the Bulls have interest in Alabama point guard Collin Sexton, a physical, penetrating point guard.

Though not necessarily because they are down or disappointed with Dunn, who had his best NBA season and already is regarded as an elite NBA defender. When the Bulls played their best this season, it was with Dunn in December and January.

You don't pass over talent because you believe you already have that position filled. And not only because you just won 27 games, which suggests you need a lot of positions filled.

Maybe just ask the Portland Trailblazers, who in 1983 drafted a super athletic shooting guard who didn't shoot that great but with Hall of Fame potential. Clyde Drexler did make the Hall of Fame, but they probably could have used super athletic, inconsistent shooting Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft. Perhaps more so in this so called NBA era of positionless basketball that relies more on passing, movement and shooting.

Trae Young may be the best combination scoring/passing player in the NBA draft, an electric shooter with uncanny passing instincts. I see no reason why he wouldn't be a reasonable pick for the Bulls at No. 7. The taller, more physical Dunn could play more off the ball and give the Bulls a shooting guard who also can pass and push the ball, potentially energizing the offense. Young also could play in a three-player backcourt rotation with Dunn and Zach LaVine, alternating throughout the game and all playing a reasonable average of 32 minutes.

Young measures about 6-1 and 180 pounds, just slightly smaller—though not by much—to the historic guards to whom he often is likened, Stephen Curry and Steve Nash.

"I try to pattern my game after multiple people," Young said. "Guys like Steph obviously, Kyrie (Irving) with his handle. I've grown up in Oklahoma City, so I love Russ' (Westbrook) mentality and the way he is on the court. I've picked different things. My favorite player growing up was Steve Nash, so that's been a guy I look up to and a guy I've gotten to talk to a few times, too. So it's been really good."

Curry and Nash were considered notoriously poor defensively, though each won consecutive Most Valuable Player awards.

"I don't really think there's necessarily a way to improve defensively by going one on (zero)," said Young. "I think just working on my body, continuing to work on my speed, just showing from Day 1 that I am going to change the narrative; that's my goal and my job, to change the narrative on that (defense)."

It's unlikely Young ever becomes a top level or even good defender. But the Bulls perhaps most need the things he does bring, like long range shooting, accelerated movement up the court, passing and spacing. Young is one of the two so-called X-factors in this draft, the players regarded to have the biggest boom/bust range along with Missouri's Michael Porter Jr. Porter Jr. had back surgery last season and has mostly refused to meet with any teams. Reports were he suffered hip spasms this week and may have to reschedule a potential group meeting with teams. Porter Jr. was regarded as the top prospect coming into this draft, but he's also mostly an individual scorer. He has high level abilities. But then do the Bulls with Dunn, LaVine and Lauri Markkanen need another player who primarily demands the ball instead of moves it?

Though what if he's better than Dunn, LaVine and Markkanen. These are not easy choices.

That's why there's also said to be interest in Kentucky's Kevin Knox, a smooth, long and versatile wing player who draws the most comparisons to a player like former Bull Scottie Pippen. Knox hasn't been rated as highly in most mock draft analyses. But many team officials see him with a greater ability to improve than many of the other players, a good chance to move into the seven to 10 range in this draft, and he is just 18.

The general consensus a week before the draft is that the top five picks should be DeAndre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Jaren Jackson Jr., Luka Doncic and Mohamed Bamba. The Bulls figure to select from a group that includes Wendell Carter Jr., Porter Jr., Mikal Bridges, Sexton, Knox and Young.

"I think everybody has things people want to look at (as potential issues)," Young acknowledged. "My job is to go out there and prove that it is not. (Size) was a concern for people coming into college (about me). I didn't let that be a factor. I know that will be a concern (again), but my job is to make that not a factor.

"My workout went really well, really well," Young said about his morning session with the Bulls. "This is one of the best ones I've had so far, a good way to end on a great note. Coach Hoiberg ran the whole thing. I think I fit really well. There are a lot of really good pieces. I know a lot of the players. A few workout with my trainers, so I've gotten to know a lot of them, Bobby (Portis), Denzel (Valentine), I've known Antonio (Blakeney) since high school. I know all about Lauri's game. I know about these guys. I think I have a really good feel for them.

"I think my ability coming into the NBA is going to make it that much easier for me with the space and the different type of players here," Young said. "I think just by the spacing alone is going to make my game that much easier and that much better for my teammates. I wanted to do something different this year. I just try and make the right play. It led to me leading the country in points and assists. As long as I'm making the right play and doing the right things, something like that could happen. That's what my mindset is, making the right play and doing the right thing each and every possession."

Young also called former Oklahoma all-American Stacey King a legend. He called King, currently the Bulls designated sobriquet selector and TV broadcaster, Mister.

The Bulls are looking for a star. He’s coming to the Advocate Center Thursday.

Now they just have to figure out if he also can be a star in the NBA.

Trae Young isn’t going to be the No. 1 selection in the June 21 NBA draft. Or likely No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4. Which is one reason why he’s working out Thursday for the Bulls, who have the No. 7 pick.

But Lil Wayne doesn’t know DeAndre Ayton. He does know Young, whom Lil called on stage during a concert in Norman. Dwyane Wade didn’t advise his eight million Twitter followers to tune in and watch Luka Doncic. But he did so for Young. LeBron James didn’t post Instagram photos of himself with Jaren Jackson or Marvin Bagley. But he did with he and Young.

This college season was supposed to be about the FBI investigation or Michael Porter Jr., Marvin Bagley, even Grayson Allen and Jaylen Brunson. ESPN picked four all-American teams and didn’t mention Young’s name. Neither did Sporting News or the AP. Not even one honorable mention vote.

But for five months of collegiate basketball, there was no bigger name or bigger story than the wispy 6-1 Young, the nation’s leader in scoring and assists, averaging 27.4 points and 8.7 assists. Actually, it was sort of a quadruple double as Young also led the nation in ooohs and aaah with his assortment of floaters, pullups with the quick release and laser passes to teammates whom he knew were open before they did.

But now the NBA is uncertain, just like everyone always has been, about the slightly built kid who measured barely over six feet and about 178 pounds at the NBA Combine in Chicago last month. Sure, he can score a lot of points in college against all those zones and guys going into the insurance business. But what about against the big men in the big time?

You know, like they said about Young when he left Norman North High School averaging 43 points but wasn’t a top 20 recruit; though he did late in his high school days finally begin to draw interest from the big schools. He decided to stay close to home at Oklahoma, where he was an OU ball boy at eight years old.

“You look back a year ago to now, no one thought I would be in this situation,” Young said at the Combine at Quest Multisport. “A lot of people had me the fourth or fifth best point guard in my class; I feel like I had something to prove.”

It often seems that way for the little guys, though it’s becoming a much different NBA in which stars now have names like Curry, Nash, Parker and Paul instead of only Wilt, Kareem, Shaq and Hakeem.

The big guys are celebrated by the NBA draft guys; they are safe choices. You can’t teach size and all that. The little guys, well, not so much. They are who they are, as the cliche goes.

“I don’t think I’ve played any different than I did in high school,” Young told Slam magazine during his breakout freshman year. “I just think that maybe what they saw in high school is something that (they thought) couldn’t be done at this (collegiate) level. I’m doing the same thing I was doing in high school, just at a different level. It’s always been there. It’s just that people didn’t see it or didn’t believe it at the time. Now they do.”

But does it transfer yet again to another level, the NBA level?

Well, they said it wouldn’t from high school to college. It did, and in such a spectacular way that no one could turn away.

Young has been likened to Stephen Curry because of Young’s peculiar ability to raise up and make the most unlikely shots. It’s not fair to make such comparisons as there really are no nexts. Young when he was at the Combine said he more identified with Steve Nash.

“A lot of his intangibles really fit my game, “ Young said.

"I grew up watching Steph,” Young told CBS Sports, "but I also watched film on Tony Parker, the way he finishes around the rim, Steve Nash, the way he has touch with a floater game, Kyrie Irving, the way he can get by a defender. I feel like I resemble a lot of Damian Lillard with a lot of his aggressiveness and his ability to get to the rim.”

And when he was a kid—yes, he’s all of 19 now—Young pretty much went everywhere in his Chris Paul jersey; you know, the not so athletic Hall of Fame-to-be guard who measured an inch shorter than Young.

Trae Young is a terrific shooter with a quick release from all over the court, not a particularly great athlete, but a player with an innate awareness of movement, time and spacing. Stuff that works pretty well in the NBA these days.

Trae was born Young; that’s also the problem with trying to be in the NBA. He just doesn’t look like it. Perhaps he needs to wear a fancier watch.

He comes from a hoop family, Trae’s father, Rayford, a very good point guard at Texas Tech. He played overseas for several years, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, Trae and sister in tow until the family returned to the U.S. and settled in Norman near mom’s—Candice—family.  Rayford became successful in the medical equipment business, but his dream was the NBA. Good point guard that he was, he’d pass it to his son.

There was film study of NBA players, a ball boy at Thunder games, introductions to NBA players Rayford had known over the years from his play, removing the awe and glamour, and competition. Rayford took Trae to play in the serious pickup games in Dallas, Tulsa and Houston, “de-soft-ify him,” as he told the Washington Post. Trae was a shooter; dad explained without the obvious comparisons he needed to be more than J.J. Redick or Jimmer Fredette, spectacular scorers off screen after screen. The NBA wasn’t doing that for him. Embrace the ball and the pass. Trae did. The family lived in an exclusive section of Norman near campus, all upscale stuff and kids. Too easy, dad decided. So Trae transferred to another school with more diversity, less economic ease.

Trae worked his way scoring through the 20s, then 30s and 40s in his senior year of high school, finally drawing the attention of the big guys from Duke, Kansas and Kentucky. By then, local media was advertising where Young could be seen playing. He was box office must see. Rayford encouraged Trae to attend at one of the big places, where the scouts hang out and the pros gather. Nah, Trae was fine with helping out his hometown college, the guys who were interested when no one else was. Trae remained accessible to the community even as his fame grew, hanging out for long stretches after high school and then college games to sign autographs and talk with kids, posing for photos with everyone who asked.

Young still was ranked the 23rd overall freshman prospect coming into Oklahoma.

He opened the season with 15 points against Omaha, one of six on threes. So what was all the fuss?

By the fifth game against Oregon, Young hit for 43 points, had an amazing 26 points and 22 assists against Northwestern State, 43 again against TCU, 48 at Oklahoma State and he was a sensation; 39 and 14 at TCU, 44 against Baylor, “just” 26 and nine, but beating Kansas. And not exactly with a loaded roster playing for one time Illinois and Atlanta Hawks coach Lon Kruger. They were coming off an 11-20 season, 5-13 in conference.

Eventually after a 14-2 start, teams began loading up on Young as Oklahoma had just two other double figure scorers, no other five-star recruit. They lost nine of their last 11 and in the first round of the NCAA tournament in overtime. Young still had 28 points, shooting nine of 18 with seven assists and five rebounds in the tournament loss, out in the same round as Ayton.

Before the 2017-18 collegiate season, the mock drafts were accurate. They pretty much all had Bagley, Doncic, Ayton, Jackson, Sexton, Porter, Bamba and Bridges in the top 10. None had Young in the first round. Until a few weeks into the season. Just like in high school when none of the big guys had Young on their recruiting lists until, well, he started to play.

“I think I bring a lot of things to a team,” the soft spoken Young said at the Combine. “I bring immediate impact off the court as much as I do on the court. As far as my skill set, I can spread out the defense, I can attack defenders in multiple ways, I can get my teammates involved. I think I pretty much do it all for a team and I am looking forward to making a huge impact for whatever team I go to.”

Like a lot of kids everywhere, they just need a chance. Young in that way continues to be an inspiration. Don’t listen to them. Just show them. Is he about to show the latest group of doubters, the NBA, in a few months? Dismiss him at your own peril. There’s been a lot of regret among those who have.

Trae Young looks to continue to prove the doubters wrong

Trae Young paused during a media session at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago last month when he was asked who most influenced him. Obviously, his family was crucial. His father, Rayford, was a top collegiate guard at Texas Tech and longtime pro in Europe. Other than family? One person, Young said.

"Rod Strickland has been influential," said Young, who has a workout scheduled Thursday with the Bulls in the Advocate Center. "He gives me a lot of advice, good and bad games; he is someone I really look up to a lot."

Strickland is the onetime DePaul star who still ranks among the all-time university basketball leaders in points, assists and steals before a 17-year NBA career. He was one of the most gifted and cerebral penetrating NBA guards in a career in which he was an all-league player when he led the NBA in assists with the Washington Wizards. Strickland later went on to be an assistant coach under John Calipari at Memphis and Kentucky and an assistant at South Florida. He's seen and experienced a lot of basketball, and sees big time stardom for Young.

"His instincts are incredible," says Strickland. "He can shoot the ball, has range, but doesn't always have to be on the ball with the way the game is now with the spacing. He's going to space the court, has a quick release, can shoot off ball screens, spot up and shoot it, big time range. The court opens up after you leave college and I think he has the talent and skill level."

Strickland believes the pro game will enhance Young's skills even after Young led the nation in scoring. Young shot just 36 percent on threes his one season at the U. of Oklahoma, though Strickland believes Young was forced into so many questionable shots because he was required to be the team's offense.

"I remember sitting on the bench at Kentucky and watching Bradley Beal," Strickland recalled. "He hadn't shot it well (34 percent on threes his one season at Florida). I'm watching him warm up and saying, ‘I love his shot. But in games he hasn't shot it well.' But you could see he was a great shooter. He gets to the league and it's lights out. That's how I look at Trae Young. When he's open he'll be taking quality shots and making quality shots."

Strickland knows the knock on Young will be his defense because of his slight build and size around 6-1. Strickland wasn't much bigger, and oh does he say he wished he could have shot just a bit like Young. "Would have been the end," he said with a laugh.

"The other side of the ball, defensively, he's going to have to pick it up, get stronger," Strickland acknowledged. "But there's been a lot of guys you say can't play defense. But often your other strengths compensate for some of your weaknesses. Everybody can't have it all, but I believe you can get better defensively. We've talked about Steph  (Curry) defensively for awhile and when James Harden tried to embarrass him (in the conference finals), Steph picked it up. He's still not the greatest, but he picked it up and in the Cleveland series, too. You can get better and stronger. But the way the game is played now, the open space and with his skill level, he'll put the ball in the hole; and he really sees the court. It's an unappreciated part of his game."

Sure, there's the shooting and the passing, and that's crucial. But Strickland says that wasn't nearly the most impressive aspect to Young. Strickland also is a veteran of the AAU circuit, his son, Tai, going to Wisconsin next fall. So Rod got to know Rayford on the trail. But it was Trae who sough out the longtime NBA veteran, always curious, always inquisitive.

When Trae had games against tough defensive guards, he'd seek out Rod for advice. What did he see? What would he do? What could he change? Trae was becoming a superstar of the collegiate game, but his hunger for knowledge, for improvement, seemed insatiable.

"The advice I was giving him was to be himself and don't put too much pressure on himself every night," Strickland related in a telephone interview this week. "In college, he started off so well. Points wise, he's exceptional. His court vision and feel for the game is up there, but he had gotten into scoring so much the expectation continued. I wanted him to relieve himself of that. He is so skilled. I've seen him make passes and play the ball screens and make plays everyone is not making. Also, I didn't think he was one of those guys who had to be a scorer. Obviously, he can shoot the ball, but I didn't want his game to be defined by scoring because his feel for the game is unbelievable.

"This is the thing about Trae Young," said Strickland. "He reached out and asked me about the game and what I thought about it, what could he do to improve. To me that is so big. We have a lot of youngsters out here who get that mojo and they get so much early they think they are above that. But for him to humble himself, have the humility to do that, I felt it was big time and says a lot about him as a basketball player and student of the game. That carries over when you become a pro and try to keep developing in this game, that he can take in so many things and seek out more; that's major. I was more impressed with him than he was impressed with me and that's why I'm a fan of his.

"I've been in the NBA and college and know sometimes humility is hard, but it also helps you succeed," Strickland added. "What I love about him is he tries to learn and understand and get input. I've been on all sides, done the good, the bad, the great, the stupid, done it all. We sometimes forget a major part with being on that court also is listening to people and taking it in, knowing the history, respecting the older guys, but also having that inner confidence. I think there is nothing but big things ahead for him."

The NBA, as we often are told, is a big man's game, though somewhat less so in this era with decreasing emphasis on center low post play. Still, the elite players in the conference finals are giants like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. While some of the recently dismissed stars from the playoffs are seven footers like Anthony Davis and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

But some of the greatest impact players in the game and in NBA history, as well, are 6-3 and below.

Consider that since 2005, there have been eight different players who were named league Most Valuable Player. Four are 6-3 and smaller, comprising Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook and those generously listed at 6-3, Stephen Curry and Steve Nash.

The ideal NBA height is supposed to be about 6-7, so smaller players tend to get overlooked in the draft. But their impact cannot be denied.

Consider Hall of Famers like Calvin Murphy drafted 18th, Joe Dumars 18th, Nate "Tiny" Archibald 19th, John Stockton 16th. And then players likely to be in the Hall of Fame, like Nash picked 15th, Tony Parker 28th and Curry seventh. Maybe even Rajon Rondo at 21. Six foot Nick Van Exel became an All-Star drafted 37th.

And then there's Trae Young, the U. of Oklahoma scoring  and playmaking star who along with Missouri's Michael Porter Jr. are the mystery men of the 2018 NBA draft. Though different, both are regarded as potential high impact talents, though with accompanying big concerns. Porter Jr. had back surgery and played just three games as a freshman. Young led the nation in scoring and assists, but he measured at 6-1 3/4 with shoes and 178 pounds at the Draft Combine at Quest Multisport in Chicago last week.

The Bulls with the No. 7 pick in next month's NBA draft don't figure to get a high impact player. Those players generally are taken in the top three or four. Though a player draft is an unscientific exercise and many star players are selected later in the draft for reasons of size, generally viewed as too small or weak.

But many, nevertheless, emerge as the best players on their teams and even champions because of their high level of skill, perhaps like Young with uncanny shooting ability and being one of the best passers in college.

"I prepared extremely hard coming into the college season and made a huge impact right away," noted Young, the star of the last college season. "I'm working two times as hard this summer preparing to get to the NBA level and I want to make a huge impact right away."

The early draft consensus has potential top players like DeAndre Ayton, Luka Doncic and Marvin Bagley at the top. If Porter's physicals prove clean, he could make it a top four. That would leave the Bulls likely selecting among big men like Jaren Jackson Jr., Mohamed Bamba and Wendell Carter or a small forward like Mikal Bridges. Perhaps even an athletic point guard like Collin Sexton.

All of those players figure to be NBA starters and certainly high rotation players. All Stars? Maybe one or two for a time or two.

None of those players, though, figure to be a bust out.

And then there's Young, whom some say could fail given his diminutive stature and likely defensive shortcomings. The next Jimmer Fredette? A big time college scorer who could not stay on the court in the more rugged NBA.

But then there are players like Curry and Nash, both of whom came into the NBA with many of the same questions and doubts that have stalked Young, Nash not even a starter until his third year in the NBA. Both became back to back MVPs, the smallest players ever to achieve that status.

"Steve Nash is my favorite player of all time," said Young. "His size and my size are very similar. He is very cerebral, he can score from all three levels and he knows how to get his teammates involved and he is a winner. So I feel a lot of his characteristics match mine.

"I love the comparisons (to Curry)," Young acknowledged. "He's a two-time MVP and a champion. I feel I bring a lot of different things from different types of players. I think I bring a lot of things to a team. I bring immediate impact off the court as much as I do on the court. As far as my skill set, I can spread out the defense, I can attack defenders in multiple ways, I can get my teammates involved. I think I pretty much do it all for a team and I am looking forward to making a huge impact for whatever team I go to. I'm just trying to be the best version of Trey Young."

There's clearly a fear factor with a player not only like Young, but spending a season like the Bulls have not in contention and in the lottery. You need to add a talented player who can be a part of your core. But the Bulls don't exactly have anyone who is considered, at least now, a major star. Power forward Lauri Markkanen has shown signs and could be that kind of player. Though it takes more than one.

Can Zach LaVine? Can Kris Dunn? Can you find one in free agency? Though trade?

One big issue that has been facing the Bulls is movement on offense, passing and sharing the ball.

Dunn and LaVine, though just in their first seasons with the Bulls and both often injured, tended to be more ball dominant players. Dunn is the point guard, but at 6-4 and more than 210 pounds, perhaps he plays more shooting guard with an ability to handle the ball and LaVine with shooting range and a solid 6-5 plays small forward. Smaller, more athletic lineups have been in vogue in the NBA these days.

His high school numbers were amazing, averaging 25 points as a sophomore after not even playing as a freshman, 34 as a junior and then 43 per game as a senior. OK, but let's see it translate to the next level in a major conference. Young was the story of college basketball the first several months, lauded by LeBron James and Curry. Through January, he had four games scoring more than 40 points while getting double figure assists in eight of his first 13 games and as many as 22. Someone finally to look ahead and pass the ball?

Young stumbled later in the season as opponents focused on him with a weak Oklahoma roster. If you call averaging 23.6 points his last 12 games and more than seven assists against double and triple teams and zones a stumble.

If a player can score like that in the slower college game against defensive focus, how much would that change in the more open and faster NBA game?

Is this a chance to steal a star at No. 7?

Or end up explaining your decision for years?

"Now my main focus is getting my body right," Young told reporters on the last day of the combine. "I picked up 10 pounds of muscle in the last five weeks; we're still five weeks from the draft. Getting my body ready to handle 82 games in the season. I'm excited having the opportunity to show people I can play defense and have been super excited to show that from Day 1. The fact I don't like playing defense  (is a misconception). I am looking forward to showing that. I love (playing bigger guards). I love when people try to get physical with me. They think that's the way to guard me, to get physical. But I use that to my advantage.

"I think I am the best overall player in this draft," Young offered conversationally. "My main focus isn't necessarily to be the best player in this draft. My goal is to be the best player in the NBA and that is what I am focusing on each and every day. My main focus is going to the right team; it's not about being one, two, three or 30. You see a lot of guys who stick around (late in the draft). It's all about the fit for me. Whether that is No. 1, whatever, I'm going to be happy and ready to make an impact.

"There are teams in this draft who are one, maybe two pieces away from being a team in the lottery this year but not next year," Young said. "There are some teams like that I feel like if I am on that team that I can be a big impact for them. Everybody has different types of games and I think mine is unique and different."
