The NBA announced today that Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen was named to the World Team for the 2019 Mtn Dew Ice Rising Stars game at NBA All-Star Weekend, as selected by NBA assistant coaches.

The 21-year-old from Finland was the seventh-overall selection in the 2017 NBA Draft. After missing the first 23 games of the 2018-19 season due to a right elbow sprain, he is now averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds to go along with .431 shooting from the field, .395 from three, and .841 from the free throw line. Markkanen posted his sixth double-double in 27 games played vs. Cleveland on Sunday, Jan. 27, with 21 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. He has made at least three 3-pointers in seven consecutive games, which is the longest such streak in Bulls history. Markkanen has scored 20 or more points in four of his last six games, and 10 games overall, with a season-high 32 vs. Orlando on Dec. 21, which he followed up with 31 points at Cleveland on Dec. 23 for his first career set of back-to-back 30-point games. Among rookie and sophomore players who have played at least as many games as Markkanen, he ranks sixth in points per game, fifth in rebounds per game and sixth in 3-point percentage.

The 2019 Mtn Dew Ice Rising Stars game will take place on Friday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. CT at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC. The 25th Rising Stars will pit 10 first- and second-year NBA players from the United States against 10 first- and second-year NBA players from around the world in the league’s annual showcase of premier young talent during NBA All-Star Weekend.  MTN DEW ICE will serve as the title partner, expanding on its continued commitment to supporting up-and-coming stars throughout the sport. The Chicago Bulls have traded a protected second-round pick of the 2020 NBA Draft to the Houston Rockets for guard Michael Carter-Williams and cash considerations. In a preceding move, the Bulls waived guard MarShon Brooks. Carter-Williams was also waived following the trade. 

Chicago’s roster now stands at 16, including two Two-way players.

The Chicago Bulls have traded forward Justin Holiday to the Memphis Grizzlies for guard MarShon Brooks and guard/forward Wayne Selden Jr., as well as the Grizzlies’ 2019 and 2020 second-round picks. In a related move, the Bulls also waived guard Cameron Payne.

Brooks (6-5, 200) was selected 25th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2011 NBA Draft, but was moved to the New Jersey Nets in a draft-night deal. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during the 2011-12 season. An NBA veteran with five seasons of service, Brooks has also played for the Celtics, Warriors, Lakers and Grizzlies. He holds career NBA averages of 8.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.3 minutes per game. This season, Brooks is averaging 6.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 13.3 minutes over 29 games. He also played overseas from 2014-17 and has played in the G League for the Maine Red Claws and Santa Cruz Warriors.

Selden Jr. (6-5, 230) went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft. He played three games with the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2016-17 season while on a 10-day contract before being signed by the Grizzlies for the remainder of 2016-17 through this season. Over his NBA career, Selden has averaged 7.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.1 minutes per game. This season, he’s averaging 5.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 14.2 minutes per game. Selden also has G League experience with the Memphis Hustle.

The Bulls signed Holiday as a free agent prior to the start of the 2017-18 season. He was also with the Bulls during part of the 2015-16 season after being traded from the Atlanta Hawks. In his time with Chicago, Holiday averaged 10.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.21 steals in 29.9 minutes per game.

Payne came to Chicago via a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2016-17 season. Over three seasons with the Bulls, Payne averaged 6.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 18.8 minutes per game.

Bobby Portis injured his right ankle in the fourth quarter of the Bulls game vs. the Brooklyn Nets last night. An MRI and repeat physical exam were performed this morning, and he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. Portis will be out two-to-four weeks.

The Chicago Bulls announced today changes to Jim Boylen's coaching staff. Assistant coach Nate Loenser has been elevated to the bench, while director of player development Shawn Respert, has also been elevated to the bench, as he now joins Boylen's staff as an assistant coach. Longtime NBA coaching veteran Dean Cooper comes to the Bulls after starting the season as an assistant coach with Chicago's G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls. Assistant coach Randy Brown notified the Bulls today that he has resigned from his post with the team.

Loenser is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Bulls.  He served as head coach of the Windy City Bulls during the team's inaugural season in 2016-17. He spent the 2015-16 as Chicago's video coordinator, after having coached at the University of Southern Mississippi and Iowa State. “Nate is a very bright, young coach who has earned this opportunity," said Boylen.

Respert most recently served as the team's director of player development since the start of 2017-18 season. Prior to coming to Chicago, he was a regional scout and assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies. While with the Grizzlies, he was a member of David Joerger's staff for three seasons (2013-16). He also spent three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he worked as an assistant coach with an emphasis on player development.  He worked four seasons with the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach (2008-11). “Shawn is in charge of our player development and I feel it is vital that he is on our bench with our players," said Boylen.

Cooper reunites with Boylen having worked together on Rudy Tomjanovich's staff with the Houston Rockets.  Before his term in Hoffman Estates with the Windy City Bulls, he was the head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars/Idaho Stampede for three seasons (2014-2017). Prior to his time with Salt Lake City, Cooper enjoyed a second stint with the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach for Kevin McHale (2012-14). His first tour with the Rockets spanned nine seasons (1999-2008) where he held several roles, including video coordinator, assistant coach, personnel scout, director of scouting and vice president of player personnel. He also spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves as the director of player development for two seasons (2010-12). “Dean is a veteran coach who has a ton of experience and someone I have a great comfort level with," said Boylen.

Brown, an assistant coach with the Bulls since 2015, was offered an opportunity to remain on the staff, but declined the post. “I'm disappointed Randy has made this decision, but I understand he has to do what is best for him," said Boylen.

Boylen's coaching staff is now comprised of Pete Myers, Loenser, Respert, Cooper and Karen Stack Umlauf.

The Chicago Bulls announced today that an MRI has confirmed that forward Bobby Portis sustained a moderate sprain of the MCL of his right knee during the game vs. the Charlotte Hornets on Oct. 24. It is estimated he will be out for four-to-six weeks.

September 28, 2018 - Lauri Markkanen sustained a right elbow injury in practice on Thursday, Sept. 27. He underwent an MRI today that showed a high grade lateral elbow sprain. Markkanen is estimated to be out six-to-eight weeks.

The Chicago Bulls announced today that guard Denzel Valentine has been diagnosed with a moderate left ankle sprain that occurred during practice on Tuesday, Sept. 25. He will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks.
