    Derrick Rose

The Chicago Bulls selected Memphis point guard Derrick Rose with the first pick in NBA Draft 2008. Rose, a freshman guard and native of Chicago, comes to the Bulls after a successful season highlighted by the school’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Championship Game.

During his time with the Tigers, the 6-3, 190-pound Rose led his team to an NCAA single-season record 38 wins (38-2, .950) and a Conference USA title. On the year, he started 39 of the 40 games that he appeared in and averaged 14.9 ppg, a team-high 4.7 apg, 4.5 rpg and 1.20 spg in 29.2 mpg.

Rose is the second No. 1 overall pick in franchise history (Elton Brand, 1999) and he is just the third guard to be selected No. 1 overall in the NBA in the last 30 drafts (Magic Johnson, 1979; Allen Iverson, 1996).

The Bulls also acquired the draft rights to center Omer Asik, the 36th selection in NBA Draft 2008, in a three-team deal with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets.

The 7-0, 255-pound Asik is a 20-year-old native of Bursa, Turkey. A two-time Turkish League All-Star (2007, 2008), Asik split 30 games last year with Alpella and Fenerbahce, where he averaged 10.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg, a league-high 1.90 bpg and 1.90 spg.

As far as the NBA was concerned, the Chicago Bulls were officially on the clock shortly after 6:30 p.m. CT on June 26. But in reality, John Paxson had been thinking about who he was going take at No. 1 ever since the Bulls defied incredible odds to claim the top pick on May 20.

Two days prior to the draft, Paxson said that a final decision had not been made to the question on Bulls fans’ minds everywhere—Rose or Beasley? Hear what the Bulls GM had to say about the debate, new contracts for Luol Deng and Ben Gordon, and the possibility of trading the pick.

    Derrick Rose

Becoming the potential face of the franchise for your hometown team would be a lot of added pressure for a 19-year old to handle. Just don’t tell that to Chicago native Derrick Rose—it’s a dream of his and it could very well come true on June 26.

The self-described unselfish point guard went one-on-one with following his workout on June 19 to talk about his days in the Public League, his impressions of John Paxson and Vinny Del Negro, and what it would mean to begin his pro career at home.

Michael Beasley went one-on-one with Kansas State forward Michael Beasley following his workout with the Bulls on June 17 to discuss preparing for the NBA Draft, his "rock star" freshman season, and his long-time friendship with Kevin Durant.

“I think I could be a good low post presence, but I can also bring that inside-outside balance," Beasley said of joining the Bulls. "I think I’d take some pressure off the guards and grab my share of rebounds too. I’d love to come here. Chicago’s a great city with an amazing history and tradition and hopefully they’ll have a great team again soon.”

    Derrick Rose

One led the nation in rebounding and ranked third in scoring as a freshman. The other, also a first-year collegian, led his team all the way to the NCAA’s national championship game. Both were members of the McDonald’s All-American Team as high school seniors and both earned All-American honors last season.

But that’s about where the similarities stop between Michael Beasley, a forward, and Derrick Rose, a point guard.

This year’s talent pool runs fairly deep. Memphis wunderkind Derrick Rose and Kansas State’s monster of the paint, Michael Beasley, are the odds-on favorites to be the first two choices off the board, but this Draft certainly doesn’t end there.

    Interviews with Rose and Beasley

"I'd love to play here," Derrick Rose said of coming home to play in Chicago. "I know the whole city would be behind me and it's such a great sports city. The Bulls have a lot of talent and they're young, too. I think if I'm lucky enough to come to this team, we'll do some damage."

"I think I could be a good low post presence, but I can also bring that inside-outside balance," Michael Beasley said of joining the Bulls. "I think I'd take some pressure off the guards and grab my share of rebounds too. I'd love to come here.
