Trail Blazers Return to Veterans Memorial Coliseum for 50th Anniversary Preseason Opener & Announce Decade Nights Throughout 2019-20 Season

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 16, 2019) – The Portland Trail Blazers 50th Anniversary presented by your local Toyota dealers and Spirit Mountain Casino will fittingly tip off the 2019-20 NBA season with a retro-styled preseason game hosted at Veterans Memorial Coliseum – home of the Trail Blazers from 1970-1995 and where fans witnessed the team’s historic 1977 NBA championship. The Trail Blazers will face the Denver Nuggets on October 8, with game activations mirroring that of a game from the team’s earlier decades. In addition to the throwback game elements, the team will wear their new Classic Edition uniforms and play on the new 50th Anniversary court for the first time – both of which will be key features throughout the rest of the season.

Celebrating the start of the 50th season and reminiscing on the start of the franchise, members of the original 1970-71 team including Geoff Petrie, Rolland Todd, Jim Barnett, Shaler Halimon and Bill Schonely will be in attendance to honor Portland’s first team and ambassadors.

The Rose Quarter Commons will be packed with outdoor activations for fans to enjoy before traveling back in time upon entry at the VMC with “franchise firsts,” throwback photo opportunities scattered throughout the concourse and exclusive retail items available for purchase. With views from the upper level in the VMC that are just as good as the lower bowl in Moda Center, there’s no bad seat for this preseason opener.

In addition to celebrating the 50th Anniversary at the preseason opener, there will be five decade themed nights scattered throughout the season to relive moments from Trail Blazers history and to honor each decade of Trail Blazers basketball. Every decade night will feature alumni from their respective eras, a free decade themed poster giveaway to all fans in attendance, and special retail items and activations specific to the decade will be available before and during each game. The team will also wear the special Classic Edition uniforms at each of these home games. The schedule for each decade night is below:

  • ‘70s night: Saturday, November 2 vs. Philadelphia
  • ‘80s night: Friday, December 20 vs. Orlando
  • ‘90s night: Sunday, January 26 vs. Indiana
  • ‘00s night: Sunday, February 23 vs. Detroit
  • ‘10s night: Tuesday, March 10 vs. Phoenix

To make sure fans don’t miss any of the throwback fun, a Decade Nights Ticket Pack is available through trailblazers.com/decades. The pack includes tickets to each decade night game and the preseason opener at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. To ensure the best seats and pricing, fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early.
