Things to Know

A formidable competitor with mad hops.

Revered as one of the greatest Philadelphia 76ers of all-time, Cunningham’s remarkable career saw him become one of just five people to win NBA titles both as a player and coach with the same franchise. That list also includes K.C. Jones, Bill Russell and Tom Heinsohn of the Boston Celtics and Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Career
Playing alongside Wilt Chamberlain and Hal Greer in just his second NBA season in 1966-67, Cunningham posted 18.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game to help lead the 76ers to a then-NBA record 68 regular-season wins and an NBA title.

Nicknamed “The Kangaroo Kid” for his incredible leaping ability, Cunningham made four straight NBA All-Star appearances and was named All-NBA four times.

Cunningham averaged a career-best 26.1 ppg in 1969-70, which ranked fourth in the league behind Jerry West, Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Elvin Hayes.

After much success in Philadelphia, Cunningham signed a contract to join the Carolina Cougars of the ABA in 1972. He played two seasons in the ABA and won the league MVP award in 1973.

Following his return to Philadelphia in 1974, Cunningham retired in 1976 as the third-leading scorer (13,626 points) and third-leading rebounder (6,638) in 76ers franchise history.

He took over as coach the following season, and became the fastest coach to 300 wins in NBA history. Cunningham coached the 76ers to the NBA title in 1983, guiding a team led by Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks and Moses Malone, who famously predicted Philadelphia would win each of its postseason series in “fo, fo, fo” games.

Cunningham retired from coaching after eight seasons with a 454-196 record. His team would reach The Finals three times. The only coach in NBA history with a higher winning percentage than Billy Cunningham (.698) is Phil Jackson (.704).
