Washington Wizards Sign JaVale McGee
July 9, 2008

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed first round pick JaVale McGee. McGee was selected by the Wizards with the 18th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

“JaVale has a chance to be a solid addition to our team, so we’re excited to have him officially signed,” said Grunfeld. “We were impressed with his athleticism and shotblocking when we were scouting him prior to the draft and are anxious to see him compete at the NBA level.”

McGee will be part of the Wizards’ entry in the 2008 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The team will play five games in the league from July 14-20.

The 7-foot center was an early entry candidate in the 2008 NBA Draft. A Second Team All-WAC selection in his sophomore seasons at Nevada, McGee was also named to the league’s All-Defensive Team. McGee led the WAC in blocked shots last season (2.8 bpg, 14th in the country), and finished second among all WAC players in rebounding (7.3 rpg).
