Wizards Celebrate Their Past With NBA Hardwood Classics Night

The Washington Wizards announced today that they will honor their 45th anniversary by wearing throwback Chicago Zephyrs jerseys four times this season as part of NBA Hardwood Classics Nights, beginning with tomorrow night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

As part of Hardwood Classics Night, the Wizards will adopt a ‘60’s retro theme. Player videos, player introductions, in-arena music, G-Wiz and the Wizards Girls will all capture the feel, look and sound of the early ‘60’s. In addition, the first 7,500 fans through the door will receive a commemorative mini-jersey display, compliments of Verizon Wireless.

The Zephyrs jerseys will represent the 1962-63 season, the team’s only year of existence before moving to Baltimore and adopting the Bullets nickname in 1963-64 (the team was previously known as the Chicago Packers during the 1961-62 season). The Zephyrs, who were coached by Jack McMahon and then Bobby “Slick” Leonard, were led on the court by Walt Bellamy (27.9 points per game during the ’62-63 season).

The Wizards’ three remaining Hardwood Classics Nights are Jan. 16 vs. New York, Feb. 27 vs. Chicago and March 17 vs. Orlando. Other teams participating in NBA Hardwood Classics Nights this season include the Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers.

The NBA’s Hardwood Classics Nights honor the league’s history by commemorating anniversaries, specific historical events and milestones, the history of basketball in certain cities, or legendary teams and players by wearing uniforms from each decade of the NBA’s history, as well as having special ceremonies, in-arena entertainment and promotions.

A limited number of tickets remain for tomorrow night’s game vs. the Lakers. Fans can purchase tickets at any Ticketmaster outlet, at the Verizon Center Box Office, by calling 202-397-SEAT or by clicking here.
