The 23 players who were selected for the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team program will begin training in Las Vegas on July 19 and continue through July 25. Following a five-day break, selected finalists for the USA World Championship squad will reconvene in Las Vegas on July 31 for the start of the second phase of the team's domestic training in preparation for the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Men that will be held Aug. 19-Sept. 3 in Japan.
Arenas met with members of the Washington media at Verizon Center after completing a scheduled workout, while Jamison spoke with members of the media in Charlotte, where he is holding his All-Star Basketball Camp for boys.

“I’m excited…a little nervous. It’s just like when you see rookies come in and they are trying to make a squad. That is how I feel going out there. It’s different. I have to go out there and fight and try and win a spot on that team.”
On trying to make the team:
“Like I told Coach, if someone is better than me, I can accept not making the team. But no one is going to work harder than me. I am going to work myself onto the team.”
On the caliber of the other players:
“It’s the best players in the game. It’s like an All Star game, but for real. We all heard about the Dream Team and how they worked and we want to duplicate that.”
On the commitment to the USA program:
“You are playing for your country…the USA. It will be a great feeling. You should be proud for it to say USA on your jersey.”
On Coach Mike Krzyzewski:
“I called him after July 4th and we had about a 20 to 30 minute talk. He said he likes my speed and that I can shoot. He wants to see me play defense -- to get out there and pick them up full court -- and I am willing to do anything to make this team.”
More on his conversation with Coach K:
“I told him ‘you don’t have to worry about me. I’m not one of the egotistic players. If you want me to dive on the floor and run into walls, I’ll do it.’ I’m just trying to make the team. He can worry about someone else because he won’t have to worry about me.”
On what he sees his role being:
“We have scorers. You have Kobe (Bryant), you have LeBron (James), you have Dwyane Wade. We have scorers; they don’t need that from me. All they need from me is to run the team, run the defense, be athletic and take open shots -- and I am willing to do that.”
On his reputation as a scoring point guard:
“I can be the passing point guard. I don’t need to score. I can hit the open shot, I can be a spot up shooter; I can do those things. And I am happy to show that.
Three of the NBA’s top four scorers will be there; seven out of the top ten will be there. Some of us aren’t going to have to score and I am one who is willing to do that.”
On meeting Jerry Colangelo:
“We met early in the season. He came to our game against the Nuggets so he got the chance to talk to me and to Carmelo (Anthony). The first time he spoke to me it was a feeling out process. I was nervous. I was over there sweating and shaking.
But I told him if I don’t make the team I am still going to be playing somewhere. I would be playing on streets or in a gym. I am going to be playing so he might as well just use me out there. I can be a practice player -- I don’t mind -- as long as I have that jersey on.”
On the benefits of being part of the USA program:
“The cool part is that I get to travel, and I’m just happy to be around All-Stars…players you looked up to, now you get to play with them for a month. You get to look at their work habits; you get to see what they do to get better.”
On being a role model:
“It’s great, some players don’t want to take on the role model status, but kids are going to look up to players, actors and actresses anyway, so I’m just trying to set a good example to show kids hard work and dedication to my craft.”
On the international game:
“I’ve been working out on the international three -- it’s like a free throw now. I’m accustomed to that line, and I know it’s hard for NBA players to shoot from that line. We don’t practice it -- it’s either shoot an NBA three or drive into the lane, it seems like there is no in between, so I’ve been working on it and I’ve forgotten about the NBA line.”

On training with the USA Men’s Senior National Team:
“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. Not too many guys get this chance and I’m happy to have this opportunity to represent my country. To have the opportunity to represent my country and to play for a gold medal would be one of the best things I’ve ever experienced.”
On Coach Mike Krzyzewski:
“I’ve got so much respect for him. Next to Coach Smith, I think he’s one of the best college basketball coaches ever. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and I think it’s going to be fun. For us, it’s about putting USA basketball back on the map and it’s about winning.”

“I was recruited by Coach K and if I hadn’t gone to Carolina, I’d have gone to Duke. It’ll be good to play for him, but I had a successful career against him. Coach K will take this challenge personal and will have us prepared to win a gold medal but also to represent ourselves in a way that makes the US look good. Everyone is taking this very seriously.”

“Trying out for the US Team is such a dream come true. I remember watching Michael, Magic and Larry back on the original Dream Team as a kid and I always wanted to be a part of it. It goes so much farther than basketball and the NBA because you’re representing your country.”
On the Washington Wizards:
“It’s always good when the expectations are high and you can get past the first or second round of the playoffs. When I first got to DC, we were able to win more games than we did the previous year. Now anything other than contending for a championship is unsuccessful in our fans’ eyes and in ours as well.”
On hosting his basketball camp in Charlotte:
“This is a dream for me. When I was here in high school, I didn’t know that one day I’d have the chance to play in the NBA, make the All-Star team and represent my country in the Olympics. If I could write a story about the way I wanted things to happen, I couldn’t have scripted it better. It’s been fun and I’m really enjoying myself. The city of Charlotte has been good to me.”
