Quotables: Washington Wizards Discuss Summer League 2006
Compiled July 3-5, 2006

Wizards Head Coach Eddie Jordan
On his goals for summer league:
“Player development. Our second goal is to play the right way, to play hard and to try to win some games. Our third goal is to find someone that can help us at veteran camp or in the future.”

On his assessment of the summer league team:
“I like the fact that we have some size. We have Andray Blatche and Oleksiy Pecherov who do things on the perimeter at 6’11”. That’s a beauty to behold -- a 6’11” guy who can dribble, pass, shoot and make plays. I also like Donell Taylor’s quickness and his ability to get to the basket. That’s what excites me right now about the team.”

On Oleksiy Pecherov’s work ethic:
“He has a work ethic that has already been established; it’s from playing for a professional club since a young age. He always stays late to make 20 free throws in a row, and that’s hard to do sometimes. It’s great to see a guy who is willing to work and listen. With his skill level and his upside, it’s exciting.”

On Andray Blatche and Peter John Ramos:
“I just want to see improvement from them from last summer and the end of last season to now. I want to see them help their teammates get better by running the offense and making the extra pass for a lay-up. I want to see how they react under severe pressure also.”

On Donell Taylor:
“He has one year under his belt in the NBA because of last year’s summer league. He led us in scoring last year and I think this year will be very beneficial to him again. I think he is going to be great again this summer.”

Wizards Forward Oleksiy Pecherov
On his progress after three days of practice with the Wizards:
“I think it’s a good experience for me. I never have been in this situation, so I am meeting new people and new coaches and they have shown me some new things to help me in the future. I am trying to stay focused and concentrate on myself and show everybody that I can play at this level. I am on a new team and we just met each other three days ago, but I am getting used to this atmosphere. I think we just need to take it in and try and win some games.”

On if he’ll have any difficulty learning the offense:
“I don’t think so, you just need a little time. When you take your time and listen to what he (Coach Jordan) says, you’ll be alright. You just need to do what they tell you and I think you’ll be okay. If you’re open, you take your shots. If not, you give it to another player. It’s just offense – like everywhere.” On where he wants to play next season:
“It depends on the team. If they want me right away, I’m ready to come right away. If not, I’m ready to play for another season in Europe. My job is to play basketball and to show that I can play on this level. I’m just trying to play good basketball. You just listen to the coaches and do what they want you to do.”

On his work ethic:
“I like to practice and work hard, it’s what I have to do if I want to be a good player at this level. If I want to improve myself I have to work hard and work a lot. I need to be in the gym and working hard at practice to improve myself so I can help the team in the future.”

Wizards Forward Andray Blatche
On his excitement for summer league:
“Coach gave me and Donell a lot of confidence, so I am coming in with a leader’s attitude. My confidence is sky high right now from working out everyday. I am ready to go out there and compete and to get better for next season.”

On the summer league:
“This is a real important summer for me. I want to go out there and do everything I need to do to earn some playing time for next season. I want to go out there and do everything on the offensive end and the defensive end. I also want to show that I am a leader.”

On preparing for the upcoming season:
“Last year I had an incident that set me back. This year I have been here the whole summer catching up so I can be ready for the season. I am going to be in the gym working out until the season starts. I have been here working on my shot, my inside game, and my conditioning. I have been lifting weights and trying to lose body fat. I have been doing everything I need to do to get prepared for the summer league and the upcoming season.”

Wizards Center Peter John Ramos
On playing on the summer league team:
“It’s a chance for me to show that I can help this team. I got to play a lot in Roanoke last year and this is a chance to show that I can play at this level.”

On his goals for summer league play:
“I want to be a leader for us. I want to show what I can do but I also want to be there for my teammates. I’m going to work hard and do what it takes for us to win and to help us all get better. It’s a good chance for me.”

Wizards Guard Donell Taylor
On his summer league experience last year:
“It taught me that the game was going to be much more physical and much faster. The NBA is an intense game coming from college. Summer league helped me get used to that.”

On what he hopes to accomplish during summer league:
“I want to work on my jump shot and becoming an all-around point guard. I want to get to the point where I’m helping my teammates get better.”
