Washington, DC - Washington Wizards General Manager Wes Unseld announced today that Michael Jordan will be placed on the injured list and will miss the remainder of the season due to inflammation in his right knee.

“Following his surgery, Michael did absolutely everything to come back as quickly as possible to help this team in our playoff push,” said Unseld. “In doing that, Michael probably pushed a little too hard and is now experiencing inflammation in the knee as a result.”

Jordan had arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee February 27 to repair torn lateral meniscus cartilage. He missed 12 games before returning to the active roster on March 20 in Denver. Jordan has appeared in each of the seven games following the surgery in a reserve capacity.

“I think it is best at this point to rest the knee and let it heal properly,” said Jordan. “I tried to get back and play as soon as possible and, early on, the knee responded well. But after the swelling this morning, I think it’s best to give it rest.”

Jordan reiterated last Thursday (3/28) that he will not make a determination about the 2002-03 season until after he has evaluated his health during the off season.

“I signed a two year contract to play," said Jordan. "Obviously, my health will always determine my playing status, but at this time, my plan is to play next season."

Jordan, who currently leads the Wizards in scoring with 23.3 points per game, returned to Washington Wednesday afternoon. The Wizards activated forward Bobby Simmons off of the injured list to replace Jordan. Simmons will be in uniform Wednesday night in Milwaukee.
