Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler is visiting Johannesburg, South Africa from September 3 – 7, to participate in the Basketball Without Borders Africa Camp with more than 100 of the top teenage basketball players from Africa. The Washington Wizards are also represented by Vice President of Player Personnel Milt Newton, who is making his second trip to Johannesburg with BWB Africa.
"Basketball without Borders Africa is a powerful program and something that I am proud to be a part of," said Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler. “I’m very excited to be working with these young basketball players and teaching them about the importance of education, healthy living and HIV/AIDS awareness. This is a great opportunity to pass on the positive values that basketball instilled in me as a young man.”
For the duration of the five-day event, campers will work on improving their basketball skills through drills, scrimmages, and competitions with top instruction from NBA players and coaches. Teams will be formed to promote friendship and diversity without regard to race or nationality. The campers will also participate in daily life skills sessions, in partnership with Hoops 4 Hope, in which NBA players will speak about the importance of education, leadership, healthy living and HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
To date, Basketball without Borders has featured over 250 current and former NBA players, coaches and team personnel from 30 different teams who have served as camp coaches and mentors for over 1,200 young athletes from more than 100 countries and territories on five continents.
