Wizards Sign Bobby Simmons
Washington Re-Acquires Free Agent Small Forward
October 1, 2002

Simmons
Wilmington, N.C. - Washington Wizards General Manager Wes Unseld announced today that the team has signed free-agent small forward Bobby Simmons.

Simmons averaged 3.7 points per game last season with Washington before being traded along with Richard Hamilton and Hubert Davis to Detroit in exchange for Jerry Stackhouse, Brian Cardinal and Ratko Varda on September 11, 2002. Detroit requested waivers on Simmons on September 24.

“We are excited to have Bobby Simmons back with us at training camp,” Unseld said. “He is a hard-working young man who we’re obviously very familiar with.”

Simmons was originally acquired by the Wizards in a trade with Seattle on June 27, 2001 in exchange for the draft rights to Predrag Drobnjak. He scored a career-high 15 points in Washington’s season-ending victory over New York on April 16. Simmons played in a total of 30 games last season, making three starts. He missed 42 games on the injured list with patella tendinitis in his left knee.

The second-year pro left DePaul University after his junior year in 2001 where he was the only player in school history to record 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 three-point field goals.
