Wizard Girl 2009-10 Calendar Shoot Blog

They call this work?!

Javai here with the Washington Wizard’s Dance Team aka the Wizard Girls. This is my first season on the team as well as my first time participating in a swimsuit calendar…yeah, yeah, I know – I’m a rookie. Our trip began at Regan-National Airport; two plane rides, a short taxi excursion, and one ferry later; we arrived at Long Bay Beach Resort in Tortola, British Virgin Island (BVI). Film shooting began first thing in the morning and continued until sunset. Our hosts, the BVI Tourist Board (miss you guys already!) met us each morning at breakfast, mapped out our daily schedule and transported us from shoot to shoot. The trip wouldn't have been as amazing or have run as smooth as it did without them; they had the keys to the BVI. With keen knowledge of navigating around the islands and contagious kindness and love, they took us to the most beautiful locations the BVI had to offer.

Those lucky enough to venture off to Tortola, I have some recommendations where you can grab a great meal; "Myetts" is located in Cane Garden Bay; it is very open and right on the water. If you see a sandy colored dog with a collar on...she is sweet and loves table scraps! The best place to be on a full moon is "Bomba Shack", ask for Bomba!

If you didn’t think we were spoiled yet…The BVI hooked us up with some pretty incredible yachts. We boarded Moorings Power Cats (the awesome yachts) and sailed to Jost Van Dyke. My photo shoot was actually shot on the back of the yacht as we were in route! Upon arrival, we anchored about 50 ft. from shore. The more adventurous girls swam in; while the others took a dingy boat to shore (I’m not ashamed to say I took the dingy boat). After Kahla’s shoot on the beach, we took a taxi to “Foxy’s” for some lunch and to film Steph’s shoot. I recommend the jerk chicken!

Peter Island was a little more secluded then the other islands, but the views were breathtaking. Celebrities like Oprah and Robert Dinero, who take trips and stay at the crème de la crème of resorts and islands vacation here. Sam and Nina had their photo shoot on Peter Island Resort at the Falcons Nest. Words can’t describe the incredible view, the décor, the infinity pool, and did I mention the cave and waterfall?! This place is where the who’s who of the world stays. Keep an eye out for it in the calendar, and if you want to Google it and take the virtual tour – I won’t judge.

For the second half of the trip we stayed at Nail Bay Resort in Virgin Gorda. Some of the girls got to stay in their own villa with a balcony and private pool! Alex and Suzanne went down to the “Baths” for their photo shoot. Again – words do not do it justice. The busses dropped us off at the top point; we walked down a rocky path that flooded into the Bath's. We spent the entire morning filming and had a blast exploring the area for the best backgrounds. Our hosts took us to lunch at "Mine Shaft Cafe" and afterwards showed us the old ruins of the islands Copper Mine. By the time we got back to the hotel everyone was exhausted but two more girls had to make their way down to the beach for a sunset shot. We caught our second wind and made our way down to "Rock Cafe & Sam's Piano Bar" for some late night dinner and a very impressive sing-along performance by Steph, accompanied by the piano man.

On our last day of shooting, we took a water taxi to Anegada; which means the "drowned land." Known for its large piles of conch shells, flat terrain and sparse population, Anegada is truly a world apart. Upon arrival, two shuttles took us to "Cow Wreck Beach Bar & Grille" for a lunch buffet and to shoot our last two girls. Any one looking for an escape from reality and good conversation with a bar tender named "Lil Bits" (because he only takes a little and leaves the rest for everyone else) this is the place for you.

This was an unforgettable experience and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be apart of this organization. The photos are stunning and I'm sure it will be a challenge to pick which ones will make the calendar.

Thank you for checking out our website and be sure to keep an eye out for our 2009-2010 Wizard Girls Calendar coming out soon!
