Courage. It is a word that is synonymous with professional athletes and used freely to describe plays, effort and officials’ calls. “He gave a courageous effort right there,” or “it takes a lot of courage to make that kind of pass in this kind of situation,” are cliches echoed by coaches, broadcasters and fans game after game and year after year.

It is a fair description, but frequently the true meaning of the word is lost or forgotten, as it is lauded on athletes who are simply doing what they are supposed to do.

The Washington Wizards are doing their best to remind everyone what true courage is and are asking for your help. Through its Courage program presented by Telos Corporation, the Wizards will raise funds to help the truly courageous men and women who protect and defend our country and their families.

This season the Wizards will sell Courage hats with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a nonprofit organization that helps families of the fallen. TAPS provides comfort and care for anyone who has suffered the loss of a military loved one.

Starting Nov. 12 Courage hats will be sold for $20 online at WashingtonWizards.com and at the Team Store and stands throughout Verizon Center during Wizards home games. There will also be a limited number of autographed Courage hats available for sale at WashingtonWizards.com and the MSE Foundation table located behind section 104 on the main concourse at Verizon Center. For $50 fans can purchase a Courage hat signed by any individual Wizards player.

Founded out of tragedy in 1994 TAPS has established itself as the front line resource to the families and loved ones of our military men and women. TAPS provides ongoing emotional help, hope and healing to all who are grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America, regardless of their relationship to the deceased, geography or circumstance of the death. TAPS offers comfort and care through comprehensive services and programs including peer-based emotional support, case work assistance, crisis intervention and grief and trauma resources.

The brave men and women in the military display the ultimate meaning of the word courage. They risk their lives to protect ours and serve our country with valor. That is true courage.

You too can show your support of their courageous efforts and join the Wizards and Telos to help make a difference. All it takes is one Courage hat; purchase yours today.
