One week before Thanksgiving, Charrisse Jackson Jordan, Robyn Dixon and Etan Thomas, the wives of Head Coach Eddie Jordan, Juan Dixon and Etan Thomas, passed out over 400 turkeys and bags of food to families at Heaven's Grocery Store in NE Washington D.C.
"This is the 10th year of our annual Turkey Drive," said Judy Holland Senior Vice President of Community Relations. "We prepared over 400 baskets and they are equipped with a turkey, a two liter of soda, bread, celery, potatoes, vegetables and stuffing. We tried to incorporate everything that you would need for a Thanksgiving meal."
While the event took place on Thursday, the preparations began just over a week ago with a handful of volunteers traveling into the city from Fredricksburg. For several years now, the same small group from Fredricksburg single handedly packed over 400 bags of food to help make sure 400 families will not go hungry this Thanksgiving.
"We started last Tuesday on the 14th and we finished just yesterday," said Darlene Johnson one of the volunteers. "My favorite part is just seeing the smiles on the faces. It’s a blessing to give away this many Thanksgiving dinners so that everyone will be able to have a great dinner they can put on their tables.
This was the second Turkey Drive for Jordan who plans on keeping with the holiday spirit through the next week and even on Thanksgiving.
"Tomorrow we will be collecting cans for the homeless" said Jordan. "Then we will be serving dinner at the Chophouse on Thanksgiving. It is great because in my house we won’t be able to eat a traditional dinner, but to be able to serve a dinner to others will be awesome."
The Turkey Drive is part of the Washington Wizards community service program, "Wizards Care", a program that is designed to assist the youth, homeless and underserved in the metropolitan D.C. area.Wizards Care provides a series of activities and events that support the commitment to the community that owners Irene and Abe Pollin have demonstrated throughout the years.
"This is the season of giving and Wizards Care under the direction and leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Pollin have mandated to their employees to give back," said Holland. "We are just truly blessed to give back and have owners that care about the community and that do everything in their power to make sure everyone has a great holiday season."
