Wizards Care announced that over $350,000 was raised during tonight’s Wizards Care Telethon, which took place during Comcast SportsNet’s broadcast of the Wizards game at Cleveland. Those proceeds will go to the Capital Area Food Bank to provide over a million meals to the area’s hungry.
“We are thrilled to have raised such an amount in the inaugural year of the Wizards Care Telethon” said Wizards Chairman Abe Pollin. “This is a testament to the goodwill of our fans and the citizens of the D.C. community and shows what we can accomplish by working together to combat the issue of hunger.”
The Wizards Care Telethon was hosted by Comcast SportsNet’s Chris Miller and Ron Thompson, Wizards Official DJ Big Tigger and Wizards In-Game Host Autria beginning during the pre-game show and continuing with live updates throughout the course of the game and during Wizards Post Game Live. Wizards Wives, former Wizards players Gheorghe Muresan and Ledell Eackles and NBC News’ Luke Russert manned the Telethon phones and auctioned off unique merchandise and memorabilia.
Wizards Care is inspired by Irene and Abe Pollins’ 44-year legacy of giving. Since their tenure as owners of the Wizards franchise began in 1964, the Pollins have demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility and a passion for giving back to the community. Their philanthropic and humanitarian efforts have created an unparalleled history for Wizards Care to follow.
The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest public, nonprofit food and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area. Last year, the CAFB distributed 20 million pounds of food, including six million pounds of fresh produce, to over 700 partner agencies.
Through fundraising and awareness campaigns, Wizards Care and the Capital Area Food Bank have partnered in an effort to address the issue of hunger in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
