Throughout the 2017-18 seasons the Washington Wizards will continue to host Reading Timeouts at various locations in the Metropolitan Area for elementary school-aged children. The Reading Timeout with the Wizards program consist of a variety of events which include hosting reading timeouts in local schools, player appearances, online reading timeouts and book donations. This year the program will incorporate reading log tracking for students and teachers, which will track the number of books and the time spent reading during the month. Students who reach their reading goals will receive a special Wizards Reading Timeout prize.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, the Washington Wizards will host the fourth annual “We Are Dreamers” Dr. King challenge for elementary, middle and high school-aged students. Participating students must submit original pieces of work on a specific focal point outlined by the Community Relations department. Additional information on the challenge will be posted soon!
“Spread the Word to End the Word”: Wizards and Special Olympics Unified Basketball Game
In a continued effort to raise awareness and in conjunction with the NBA league-wide campaign, the Wizards will continue our partnership with the local Special Olympics chapter by hosting the Spread to End the Word basketball game. During a Wizards home game in the month of March we will also recognize athletes from the Special Olympics as well as encourage fans to take the pledge to cease from using the “R” word.

Salute to the Stars
In celebration of the NBA’s Hoops for Troops week and in an effort to show their appreciation for the Armed Forces, the Washington Wizards hosted local veterans, active military personnel and their families for the team’s annual Wizards Care Salute to the Stars Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 10.

Activate Wizards Fitness
The Activate Wizards Fitness Program is geared toward reaching schools, community groups and other local agencies through Health & Fitness. The Wizards Care team consistently reinforces the NBA’s FIT initiative by encouraging young fans to eat healthy and be active for at least 60 minutes each day.

Washington Wizards players Kelly Oubre and Mike Scott hosted the team’s annual Halloween party on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. in the Wizards Locker Room. The players were joined by the Wizard Girls and G-Wiz. Oubre and Scott were dressed in full costume as characters from Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex and Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete by James Dean. The intimate party hosted children ages 6 to 12 from Dreams for Kids DC and members of the Wizards Kid’s Club presented by Giant. Attendees enjoyed face painting, snacks, a Halloween themed reading circle and much more!

Wizards & NBC 4 Food-4-Families
The Washington Wizards and Mystics will join forces with NBC4 to host the annual Food-4-Families canned food drive collection. This day long campaign will take place outside of the Verizon Center (6th and F Street) on Monday, November 20, 2017. Additional information about the event will be posted soon!
