Having just turned 21 years old, JaVale McGee is in his first year as a student of the NBA game, however, on Tuesday, McGee was able to take over teaching responsibilities when he hosted fifth grade students from Drew Model Elementary School for a Reading Time-Out with the Wizards.
"I think it was a great experience for our students to come out and be able to sit down and read with someone who is in the public eye," said Wendy Woodson, parent liaison for Drew Model Elementary. "It gives them something to look forward to. It was a great opportunity for them to meet him in person and letting them know the importance of staying in school and learning how to read."
Prior to McGee's arrival, the kids were entertained by the Wizards' mascot, G-Wiz, who hosted a magic show for the kids and took pictures with the kids. Following G-Wiz's performance, the kids were left wide-eyed as the 7'0 McGee entered the room to read to the children. McGee read from several poems in the book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein and also called upon several students to read to the rest of the group.
"I love talking to the kids," said McGee. "They are our future and it is important to read to them and let them know the importance of reading and staying in school."
After the reading, McGee signed autographs for all the students and held a question and answer session with the students. After receiving their autographs, the kids received one more surprise as McGee gave every student two tickets to a future Wizards game.
The Wizards Reading Time-Outs, which are sponsored by Dasani, are a part of the NBA’s Read to Achieve program, created to get children excited about reading and to promote the value of literacy.
