Last night the Washington Wizards continued their "12 Days of Holiday Cheer" campaign, as Wizards forward, Antawn Jamison and wife Ione Jamison, along with Yari Film Group, hosted a private advance screening of the film "The Perfect Holiday" for injured soldiers and their families.
"It is an opportunity for us to give back during the holiday seasons," said Jamison on the event. "Since I’ve been here the Wizards have done a tremendous job especially during the holiday seasons to give back to the community. This year we are taking 12 different steps of kindness, tonight is to give back to the military."
Yesterday's event marked the 2nd of 12 events for the Wizards "12 Days of Holiday Cheer" campaign. The 3 week long initiative began on December 1st with Andray Blatche donating 500 tickets to EMS workers and will end on December 23rd when Gilbert Arenas will host "Gilbert's Christmas Dream Skate Party".
"The importance of the 12 Days of Holiday Cheer is to provide people who wouldn’t have a happy holiday to have some holiday cheer." said Sashia Jones, Senior Director of Community Relations for the Wizards. "Whether it is treating someone to a movie or decorating a Christmas tree for them, it just says that the Wizards organization, the Wizards’ players, from the top to the bottom, care."
The Wizards All-Star forward opened the evening by signing autographs and taking pictures with all military personnel in attendance. Following his autograph and photo session, Jamison supplied his guests with popcorn and drinks while they enjoyed the movie.
"I thought it would be a great idea," said Jamison. "I just thought it was a great opportunity for me to let them know how much I appreciate what they are doing. They put their lives on the line, they sacrifice a lot of things, just for my safety and for my family's safety."
While Jamison hosted the event, the military soldiers were happy participants and for Sergeant Shainta Bailey, the event was something she will never forget, "It’s my first movie premiere. Usually as soldiers we don’t get invited to things like this so it’s quite an honor."
Following the movie the military families received another surprise when cast members Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut and Charlie Murphy walked out onto the stage following the movie. The military families had a question and answer session with the celebrities and also received two tickets to an upcoming Wizards game on December 21st.
The next event in "12 Days of Holiday Cheer" will be a holiday party for pediatric patients on Saturday, December 8th. G-Wiz and the Wizards Dancers will host a holiday party for pediatric patients at Ronald McDonald House and Fairfax Hospital.
