Gilbert Arenas Scores for Schools
October 29, 2007

On opening night of the NBA season there will be one guaranteed winner, Hugh M. Brown middle school, as today they were the first school selected in Gilbert's Scores for Schools, a community relations program led by the Washington Wizards, Gilbert Arenas. For every home game this season Arenas will donate 100 dollars for every point he scores to that games selected school. As they did last season, Irene and Abe Pollin will do the same for every Wizards road game this season.

Last season Arenas raised over 215,000 dollars to schools throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan Community. The money donated by Arenas will be spent on a wide variety of causes with each selected school reaping the benefits of Gilbert and the Pollin's donations. For students at Burtonsville Elementary School those donations will be felt on a daily basis.

"We are providing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for our kids that don’t have lunch," said Burtonsville Principal Melissa Smith. "My kids deserve something special."

Hosting the festivities for the lottery were host of BET's 106 and Park, Big Tigger and the host of CBS's NFL Sunday, James Brown. The honorary selectors for Irene and Abe Pollin were current Wizards President, Ernie Grunfeld, Wizards mascot, G-Wiz, former Bullets great and current TV analyst, Phil Chenier, and Wizards President of Business Operations and CFO, Peter Biche. Following the announcement of all the away games the students and staff rose to their feet as the star of the show, Gilbert Arenas, came out to announce the selected schools for all the Wizards home games.

"It is important that I am involved in this project and that the ‘Scores for Schools’ program continues to provide financial assistance to local area schools in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia," Arenas said. "In many ways, this is also a comeback season for me. Since I missed the end of last season with my knee injury, it is important that I see this program through an entire season. I have received a great deal of positive feedback from many schools that this program made a difference in many young people’s lives. I want to score a lot of points so we can assist as many students, teachers and schools as possible."

With 82 games on the NBA schedule several schools were waiting for their named to be called when the final name was announced. For E.L. Haynes Public School, Patrice Griffin, the wait was well worth it.

"I was kind of like our chance is gone now and then they said our name and I was like, "that’s me!" you see everyone else get excited and you say oh I wish that was me and then it happened!" Griffin said ecstaticly. "This is fantastic this is a wonderful opportunity for them (Gilbert Arenas and Irene and Abe Pollin) to give back to the community to give back to the city and definitely something to give back to the kids so that’s a win-win. This is a great, great event!"

While hundreds of schools went home without being chosen, as Gilbert always does, he had one more trick up his sleeve, announcing to the crowd that he would give $1,000 to all schools in attendance.

“I saw how excited the kids were,"Arenas said on the last second decision. "So I didn’t want any of them to go home feeling disappointed.”
