There is an old saying that "All Good Things Must Come to An End", that was the case on Saturday afternoon as Wizards Care, the community service program of the Washington Wizards, finished up their 12 Days of Holiday Cheer with Gilbert's Christmas Dream. The event was hosted by Arenas as the All-Star invited 200 local homeless, orphan and foster care children for a fun-filled afternoon at ESPN Zone in Washington, D.C.
"This has been just an unbelievable past couple of weeks," said Danielle Dryer Assistant Director of Community Relations. "We started on December 4th with a Seniors Holiday Luncheon and we finished it off today with 200 kids from around the D.C. area getting to experience a Christmas Dream. Every kid grows up wanting to have their dreams fulfilled on Christmas and we were able to do that for 200 kids as they were able to play countless games, eat some great food and take home some gifts and memories that will last a long time."
The event began at noon with the lucky winners entering ESPN Zone and receiving t-shirts and game cards so that they could enjoy the countless games at their disposal. Following the afternoon of fun, the kids were allowed to pick through a table of candy that would make Willy Wonka jealous.
"I'm here with Hannah House which is a transitional living facility for women and their children and I am so happy to be here because most of the kids that are coming to me have three strikes against them. One they are homeless. Two they are fatherless and three they are young Afro-American children. To be able to attend this affair is priceless," said Charlyne Braxton. "We really do appreciate it because these children are our future. When somebody does something to show they care it allows them to have a happy Christmas. We found out last week that we were going to be able to attend this event and the kids have been so excited since. I think it is great when someone has reached a great status in their life like Gilbert Arenas, and they take time to give back and care for the less fortunate."
Since arriving in Washington, Arenas has hosted the event annually for the last six years around the D.C. area. Gilbert's Christmas Dream is one of the many ways that Arenas gives back through his Zero To Hero Foundation profit organization which helps promote the safety and well being of children by raising funds to support organizations that aid in the preservation of families through foster care, adoption, and child welfare services.
“It’s very important for me to give back," said Arenas. "Some kids aren’t fortunate enough to get gifts or be around family during Christmas. When I first got here, I came up with the idea for Gil’s Christmas Dream. Every year I try to do something different; it’s really evolved over the years. Just being able to give back is a great blessing. “
