Butler Donates 100 Bikes to Children
December 20, 2007

On Thursday the Washington Wizards, Caron Butler, donated 100 bikes to underprivileged children in the Washington, D.C. area. "Butler's Bike Brigade" was originally started two years ago, after Butler heard that his cousin's bike, like several others in his hometown community, had been stolen.

"This idea originally started in Racine, WI a couple of years ago when one of my little cousins, Richard Butler, had his bike stolen and I went out and purchased 600 bikes for the whole community."

Since that time Butler has continued his Bike Brigade, donating several hundred bikes this past summer to youth in Racine. Having lived in DC now for three years, Butler felt it was time to bring the event to his second home.

"I am fortunate and blessed to be in the situation to do things like this. I love being able to give back to the community. This is my 3rd year in DC now and I feel like it is my second home. Whenever you are in the situation to give, I think it is your responsibility to do it. It influences lives and helps inspire kids to do a lot of positive things and that's what it is all about the kids."

The event marks Day Ten of the Washington Wizards’ “Twelve Days of Holiday Cheer”. This holiday season the Washington Wizards will be performing twelve random acts of holiday cheer around the Washington, DC community.

"This is #10 of the 12 Days of Holiday Cheer, and we have had an awesome run," said Judy Holland Burton, Vice President of Community Relations. "This is probably one of our more special events, because we actually get to see the kids and see how excited they are about receiving the new bikes. It's an unbelievable contribution by Caron and his wife. We are really excited that he wants to do this each year and we want to give a special thank you to the people at Wal-Mart in Stafford, VA because they put all of these bikes together for us. We would have never made it without them and we really appreciate everything that they have done.

This is also one of several community service events that Caron Butler will host this year. Later this week on December 29th, during the next Wizards home game, Butler will run "Caron's Coats for Kids" drive to help less fortunate children stay warm this winter season.

"Tough Juice (Butler's nickname) is all about loving his community," said Sashia Jones, Senior Director of Community Relations. "The community loves him back and that's what makes him an All-Star both on and off the court."

The Wizards' 12 Days of Holiday Cheer will conclude this Sunday, when Gilbert Arenas will host a Skate Party on December 23rd.
