Butler Receives June NBA Community Assist Award
In recognition of Caron Butler’s outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic work, the NBA announced today it has honored the Washington Wizards forward with the Community Assist Award for June.
Caron Butler dedicated the entire month of June to community outreach with a specific focus on the youth in his hometown of Racine, Wisc. and the Washington, D.C.-area. Butler, who had his own struggles as a child, learned the importance of having positive role models in his life and today strives to serve as a positive role model. Throughout his career, Butler has focused his time and resources in events to help younger people in need, including bike giveaways and coat drives.
"I wanted to help give back to youth in a special way. I think it is important to show them that there are positive role models in their lives. I also want to thank Racine for supporting me, and the summer homecoming events were a show of my thanks. I’m very proud, and truly blessed, to be able to participate in all of these events with Mayor Becker, Police Kurt Wahlen and the youth of the Racine and Washington, D.C. community."
Butler hosted Caron Butler’s Summer Homecoming in his hometown of Racine, Wisc., which consisted of several charity events focused on the youth in the community, including a reading time-out for local students and Butler’s Bike Brigade. Butler teamed with Wal-mart to distribute 500 brand new bikes and helmets which was followed by a caravan of the children and community leaders with their new bikes to each of the four community centers that Butler attended while growing up. Butler was also honored as the City of Racine proclaimed June 8, 2007, Caron Butler Day at City Hall.
Also, in Racine and D.C. during the month, Butler’s 3D Youth Basketball Camp focused on teaching basketball fundamentals as well as discipline, determination, and dedication; three keys to his success in life. Butler also joined D.C. Tobacco Free Families to help launch the Quit Smoking Campaign at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C.
As the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award, Butler will receive the David Robinson Plaque with the inscription, "Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece." In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 donation will be given to the Bray Center in Racine, Wisconsin on Butler’s behalf.
