The San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program is the oldest and largest organized toy program in the nation, giving out over 200,000 toys to 40,000 needy children on a yearly basis. The program started with just a few firefighters repairing bicycles for needy kids in the neighborhood and has now grown to a year-round operation serving the neediest children in their time of need. A majority of the toys are delivered to underprivileged children in San Francisco, with additional toys going to women's shelters, cancer wards, victims of fire and other natural disasters. The firefighter's toys have been delivered as far away as Japan and Haiti for earthquake survivors, as well as to hurricane survivors in NYC and New Orleans.
