The Golden State Warriors selected Stephen Curry, a guard from Davidson, in this evening’s NBA Draft. The league’s annual selection process took place in the WaMu Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, with the Warriors basketball operations staff – led by General Manager Larry Riley – operating from the team’s draft headquarters in downtown Oakland.

“We are very happy that we were able to select Stephen Curry,” Riley said. “We think that he is a tremendous player. Not only is he a terrific shooter, but he can also pass the ball and is a very smart player. He will fit in very well with our team.”

Curry, an early entry candidate for the 2009 NBA Draft after playing three seasons at Davidson, was a consensus All-America selection this past season after leading the nation in scoring with 28.6 points per game to go along with 4.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.53 steals in 34 games. A 6-3 guard, Curry appeared in 104 collegiate games during his career, averaging 25.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.13 steals, while shooting 46.7% (871-1866 FG) from the field, 41.2% (414-1004 3FG) from long range and 87.6% (479-547 FT) from the free throw line.

The Akron, Ohio, native left college ranked 25th in NCAA Division I history with 2,635 points and ranked fourth in career three-pointers with 414. The 21-year-old Curry also established new school and Southern Conference scoring records, while also establishing new school marks for 30-point games (30) and 40-point games (six). He notched a career-high 44 points twice in 2008-09, hitting the mark at Oklahoma and versus North Carolina State.

Curry, whose father, Dell, played 16 NBA seasons from 1986-87 thru 2001-02, will wear uniform #30.
