Just five days removed from their last trip to Los Angeles, the Warriors (19-22) will return to Staples Center on Friday, this time to square off with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers (22-19). The Warriors have lost three-straight contests, including two tough home losses, and will be looking to get back into the win column as they face the Lakers for the second time this season. In the teams’ first meeting on January 14, Bryant scored 38 points in a 110-104 Lakers victory.
Golden State’s main focus on Friday night is obvious: find a way to contain Kobe. The Lakers’ guard erupted for 81 points versus Toronto on Sunday, the second-highest single-game scoring total in NBA history. The only man to top that figure is Wilt Chamberlain, whose infamous 100-point game came as a member of the Philadelphia Warriors on March 2, 1962. Kobe and the Lakers will have had four full days of rest before they host the Warriors on Friday, so the anticipation of this game will be felt on a great level. The Warriors will attempt to look past all the hoopla and focus on securing a victory, as inter-division match-ups during the middle of the season carry much significance.
Following Friday’s contest, the Warriors will make a quick turnaround and head back home. On Saturday night, they will host the Portland Trail Blazers in another Family and Friends Weekend contest at the Arena in Oakland. The team will then have three days off before heading to Seattle on Wednesday, February 1 for the first game of a road/home back-to-back. The next night, they will host Tim Duncan and the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs .
