Warriors Head Athletic Trainer Tom Abdenour Accepts Position At San Diego State
Has Headed Warriors Athletic Training Staff For 23 Years; Will Remain With Team Until Replacement Is Found

Abdenour spent 23-plus years as the Warriors Head Athletic Trainer.

Golden State Warriors Head Athletic Trainer Tom Abdenour, who has overseen the team’s athletic training staff for the last 23-plus years, has accepted a similar position with San Diego State University, it was announced today. Abdenour, 56, will remain with the Warriors until a replacement is identified. His new duties with the Aztecs will encompass a wide variety of responsibilities as the school's Head Athletic Trainer.

“We’d like to thank Tom for his outstanding years of service with the Warriors,” said General Manager Larry Riley. “As one of the longest-tenured athletic trainers in the NBA, Tom's dedication, passion and commitment to his profession has been widely recognized on many levels, both internally and nationally. He’s been an exemplary employee who has received several honors for his accomplishments, including in 2007, when he was inducted into the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Hall of Fame and, in 1990, when he was named the NBA's Athletic Trainer of the Year. Additionally, his numerous contributions to the Bay Area community and his diligent drive to better the fraternity of athletic trainers on all levels is a testament to his character. Tom’s pursuit of his Doctorate degree and his interest in returning to his roots at the collegiate level some 23 years after leaving Weber State make this an ideal fit and something we support. We wish him the best as he embarks on a new challenge in San Diego.”

A graduate of Wayne State University, Abdenour joined the Warriors prior to the 1987-88 season following an eight-year stint as Athletic Trainer at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He and his brother, Mike Abdenour, the Head Athletic Trainer for the Detroit Pistons, join Gary Briggs (Utah Jazz), Ed Lacerte (Boston Celtics) and Gary Vitti (Los Angeles Lakers) as NBA athletic trainers with the longest current tenure with the same teams.

“This is a great opportunity for me, although it is difficult to say goodbye to so many people that I respect and admire,” said Abdenour. “I feel honored to have worked with many talented individuals with the Warriors and the NBA over the last 23 years and I would not trade the experience for anything in the world. I’m looking forward to this new opportunity in San Diego and extend a big ‘thank you’ to the Warriors and my NBA colleagues as I transition into another phase of my life.”
