LITTLE GENERAL HELPS
HOLD THE FORT
With fellow point guards Speedy Claxton and Nick Van Exel both on the injured list late in the season, Avery Johnson stepped-in and provided valuable minutes at the point guard postion. Over his final 11 games played, Johnson averaged 8.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.09 steals in 21.0 minutes -- scoring in double figures five times. He registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists in 19 minutes vs. Washington (3/26), marking first double-double since recording 18 points and 16 assists with Denver at Minnesota on 2/15/02. In his last two games played in 2003-04, the “Little General” averaged 14.5 points (.556 FG%), 5.5 assists and 3.50 streals in 26.0 minutes, including a season-high 16 points in his last game of the season at Boston on 4/2. He was subsequently forced to sit out the team’s final seven games with a strained right hamstring. |
A LEADER OFF THE COURT AS WELL
Avery Johnson was named the recipient of the Fourth Annual Golden State Warriors Foundation Award. The award is given each season to the Warriors player who best exemplifies the spirit of community service during the season through their outstanding commitment of time, service and financial support to children and families in the Bay Area. Among his various community contributions during the 2003-04 campaign, Johnson hosted Friday Night Fellowship events at The Arena in Oakland, participated in various Read To Achieve events, including the Black History Month program in February, delivered turkeys and gifts during the holiday season and lent his time to several Warriors season-ticket holder and fan appreciation events.
