Hardwood Classics Returns
To Honor Rick Barry
The following feature coincided with the Warriors Hardwood Classics Promotion during the 2004-05 season

No matter what your basketball taste, the Arena in Oakland will serve up a bill of fare Monday night sure to satisfy every kind of NBA fan. It doesn't matter if you're old school or new school or prefer the backdoor pass to the slam dunk, you'll get your basketball fill when the Golden State Warriors take on Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets at 7:30 p.m. (Get Tickets)

The contest marks the return of Hardwood Classics Mondays - presented by Verizon Wireless - with the Warriors honoring Rick Barry, one of the franchise's all-time great players and leader of Golden State's 1974-75 championship team.

HWC Mondays already have proven to be hugely popular with Bay Area fans and Monday figures to be no different.

The first 5,000 to arrive at the Arena on Monday will have a chance to win one of 50 authentic Mitchell and Ness HWC Rick Barry 1975-76 jerseys, valued at $250. The gold and blue jersey features the outlined state of California with a blue star denoting Oakland, and Warriors' script above. Barry will be in attendance to personally hand out the jerseys, take photos and sign autographs for many of the lucky winners at the contest. There also will be an underhanded free-throw shooting contest at the half - a tribute to Barry's unique yet singularly successful style.

Barry ranks among the Warriors' all-time career leaders in virtually every statistical category, including scoring, rebounding and assists. Barry, an eight-time NBA All-Star, was the NBA Finals MVP in 1975 and was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996.

The new school Warriors will again be wearing their throwback uniforms as newly acquired Baron Davis will don the 1966-67 unifom in front of the Arena in Oakland faithful for the first time. The jerseys featuring "The City" and the classic Cable Car design, are among the leagues most popular and were ranked by GQ magazine among the greatest uniforms of all time in any sport.

Tracy McGrady, Yao, and their Rockets’ teammates will also be wearing retro uniforms. Yao is considered one of the world’s most popular NBA players as noted by his all-time record-breaking vote total for the recent NBA All-Star game in Denver. The 7-6, center is a great drawing card here in the Bay Area, while McGrady remains one of the most exciting and popular players of the new school NBA era.

This game marks the fourth installment of the popular HWC Mondays. The Warriors have honored Alvin Attles, Nate Thurmond and Wilt Chamberlain. In two weeks the franchise will honor the 1974-75 championship team when the team plays host to the New York Knicks. “Run TMC” , aka Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and current Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin, will also be featured when the Warriors play the L.A. Lakers on Monday, April 18th (Get Tickets).

The Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards are all taking part in the league-wide HWC promotion this season.

Just in case the retro atmosphere, jersey giveaways, Yao and T-Mac aren’t enough to attract the casual NBA fan to the Arena in Oakland for Monday's game, Pride and Joy, one of the Bay Area's most popular bands, will provide the musical backdrop for the festivities.
