NBA Pre-Lottery Position History

The chart below reveals the movement of each pre-Lottery slotted position in the NBA Lottery since 1994, when the league began using the current weighted system, with the post-Lottery results (up, down or no movement) detailed in each respective box.

Since the NBA Lottery moved to its current weighted system in 1994, six teams slotted seventh-or-lower prior to the lottery have moved up into the top three, most recently Cleveland in 2011, who moved up from #8 to #1.

  • Has moved down to the 3rd overall pick seven times, last in 2010 (New Jersey).
  • Has moved down to the 4th overall pick nine times, last in 2009 (Sacramento).
  • Has moved down to the 5th overall pick once in 1986 (New York).
  • Has moved down to the 7th overall pick once in 1985 (Golden State) - tied for worst record 22-60

  • Has moved up to the 1st overall pick three times, last 2003 (Cleveland).
  • Has moved down to the 3rd overall pick five times, last in 1997 (Boston). (1985, Indiana tied for worst record (22-60) moved to third overall pick.
  • Has moved down to the 4th overall pick 10 times, last in 2011 (Cleveland).
  • Has moved down to the 5th overall pick seven times, last in 2009 (Washington).
