The Warriors will enter Friday’s contest on the heels of Wednesday’s defeat in Portland. In that contest, the Trail Blazers got off to a hot start, while Golden State stumbled out of the gates. Despite the disappointing result, the Warriors bench put up another strong performance. Golden State’s second-unit posted a season-high 68 points, out-scoring the starters, and trimmed a 17-point deficit to single digits in the first half before Portland pulled away in the third quarter.
Continued bench production will be crucial for the Warriors for the remainder of the year. The team is nearly halfway through the regular season, and as the daily grind of an 82-game campaign takes its toll on those who log heavy minutes, Golden State can only benefit from a reserve stepping up off the bench.
CJ Watson did just that on Wednesday. After signing with the Warriors on Tuesday, the former D-League star did not show a lack of familiarity with the club in his NBA debut. Rather, he appeared to feel right at home as he finished with 11 points and four assists in 30 minutes of action.
Matt Barnes and Mickael Pietrus also played well in their reserve roles on Wednesday. Barnes had a team-high 14 points and six rebounds while Mickael Pietrus knocked down a trio of three-pointers to finish with 13 points and rebounds. If Barnes and Pietrus can continue to thrive off the bench, along with Al Harrington’s consistent scoring ability, then Golden State can possibly become one of the deepest teams in the league.
That depth will be tested on Friday as the Warriors face a Grizzlies team that posses some dangerous weapons in Pau Gasol, Rudy Gay and Mike Miller, all of whom average more than 16.0 points per game.
Following Friday's contest, the Warriors will remain at home to host the Indiana Pacers in yet another Family and Friends Weekend contest. The game will mark the first time former Warriors Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu have appeared at ORACLE Arena since being traded to Indiana last January. After hosting the Pacers, the Warriors will set out on a Midwest road trip that will see them travel to Minnesota, Indiana, Chicago and Milwaukee.
