POINTS, POINTS, POINTS
If you like scoring, then this is the series for you. In the four regular season meetings between the two teams, Golden State averaged 124.3 points per game, while Portland wasn’t far behind with 117.0. In fact, the 965 points the teams combined to score in the four games were the most combined points in any season series in the NBA this year. The Warriors and Trail Blazers were the only two teams to rank in the top-five in the league in both three-pointers made per game and team three-point percentage, and that trend held true in the first round of the postseason, where Golden State and Portland used their proficiency from long distance to dispatch the Rockets and Clippers, respectively. The playoffs are a different beast than the regular season, however, and that’s revealed in each team’s efficiencies on both ends of the floor. Both the Warriors and Trail Blazers have dipped slightly in offensive rating in the playoffs relative to the regular season, but their defensive ratings have improved by a greater margin to counteract that drop-off. It will be interesting to see if either side is able to carry their defensive success from their first round victories into this series, where both offenses have proven more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard.

GUARD MATCHUP
To a certain extent, you can throw some of those explosive offensive numbers out the window, at least for the start of this series. Stephen Curry remains sidelined while recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee, and while his return could come sooner than initially expected, it seems highly unlikely he will participate in either of the first two games of the series. His absence thrusts Shaun Livingston into the spotlight, where the veteran point guard must feel more comfortable by now. Livingston filled in admirably for Curry in the final six quarters of the Warriors’ first round series that followed Curry’s injury, where the Warriors outscored the Rockets by a total of 60 points. He’ll start alongside Klay Thompson, who scored the third-most points and posted the best individual plus-minus against the Blazers in the regular season. In fact, the Warriors were a plus-87 in 127 minutes with Thompson on the floor and a minus-58 in 65 minutes with him on the bench. On the other side of the coin, Livingston and Thompson will go up against the Portland backcourt of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, whose 45.9 combined points per game in the regular season ranked the third-most of any duo in the NBA behind Curry and Thompson (52.2) and Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook (51.7). Oakland-native Lillard seems to always enjoy playing against his hometown team, and his 51 points in the Blazers’ lone victory over the Warriors was 10 more than any other player scored against the Golden State in the regular season; his 146 total points in the four games were 37 more than any other player had against the reigning champs. Between Thompson, Livingston, Lillard, McCollum and possibly Curry, this series boasts a collection of some of the best guards in the league today. Whichever side gets the best of this positional matchup could find themselves with the upper hand in the series.

UNIQUE BIG MEN
It’s not all about the guards, though. Draymond Green was likely the most valuable player not named Curry to the Warriors in the regular season, and he stepped up his game even more in the reigning MVP’s absence. He led all non-guards in assists during the regular season, and his 6.6 assists per game trail only LeBron James’ 6.8 among all frontcourt players in the playoffs. He’s absolutely critical to what the Warriors do on both ends of the floor, and the need for his playmaking ability is magnified while Curry is out. Ironically, the best Draymond Green impersonation going on in the playoffs is taking place in Portland, where Mason Plumlee is doing all the little things for the Trail Blazers. Of all players on teams still in the postseason, nobody averages more rebounds per game than Plumlee’s 13.2, and he’s been showing off his own playmaking ability with an average of 5.7 assists per game. In fact, he’s assisted on 38.2 percent of his possessions, the highest rate in the playoffs among players who’ve played at least 20 minutes per game in at least three games. Green and Plumlee won’t necessarily be matched up against each other, but they’ll inevitably find themselves matched up on occasion. They are two of the most unique big men in the league given their ability to move, create on offense, and suffocate on defense, and each of them may very well be the most crucial player to their team’s success in this series.
