(SAS Leads Series 3-2)
The Warriors trail their Western Conference semifinal series with the Spurs 3-2 after losing 109-91 in San Antonio on Tuesday. With Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson struggling offensively, Harrison Barnes and Jarrett Jack stepped up and kept the game close for most of the first three quarters. Fresh off of being named to the NBA’s All-Rookie First-Team, Barnes had 25 points and seven rebounds, and Jarrett Jack came through with 20 points. Carl Landry added 16 points for the Warriors, who were out-scored 55-40 in the second half. The series now returns to Oracle Arena for Game 6 on Thursday, and the Warriors will need to win that matchup in order to stave off elimination. Game 5 Reaction Blog
Mark Jackson
On whethering he was monitoring Curry's minutes down the stretch:
“It just got to a point to where they had made plays and I had to look towards Game 6. It was just being smart, that’s all. I didn’t want to see him get hurt. Obviously he wasn’t 100 percent. I just felt if we were going to make a run, let’s make a run and then maybe get him back in but it was a long night for us. Give them credit. They played great and they made plays. We look forward to Game 6. Give them credit.”
On how much Stephen Curry and Andrew Bogut have left in them:
“We’ll be fine. We’re excited about Game 6. I believe those guys have a lot left in them. We talked about it being a great series. They won the ball game tonight. Give them credit. Everybody’s hurting this time of year. My guys will bounce back.”
On Klay Thompson's performance tonight:
“(Thompson) didn’t play well. Good defense, but he didn’t play well. Give them credit. They made adjustments and they defended. We’re not being patient at times. We got a lot of guys who didn’t play particularly well tonight and that happens. We’re a no-excuse basketball team. The Spurs outplayed us.”
On the challange of trying to win two games against the Spurs to win the series:
“It’s doable. Obviously we have a tremendous amount of respect for them. They’re a heck of a basketball team. We talked about it being a long series. If we won tonight, it would be doable for them to win two games. Two pretty good teams going at it. We look forward to going back home, playing our brand of basketball and putting the pressure back on them.”
Jarrett Jack
On where this game got away from them:
"They just came out and outworked us for the entire game. They jumped out early and if you do not meet that force that they play with in this building, the game can get away from you."
On the challenge of winning the next two against the Spurs:
"It is difficult because they are a team that does not turn the ball over. They maximize their possessions. We have to do our best to do the same. We have to minimize our turnovers which gives us the necessary chances to compete with them. They do a tremendous job of playing on an even wavelength for as close to 48 minutes as you can."
On the Spurs defense causing 11 turnovers in the second half:
"I think it was just us. We were trying to do too much and we were seeing things that were not necessarily there. I put a lot of that on my shoulders. One of the roles I take upon is making sure the guys are ready to play and I did not feel we were like that for the complete 48 minutes tonight. That is something that is on my mind going into Thursday and I have to do a better job of having my guys prepared to come out there and try to get a win."
On the Spurs running Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson off the 3-point line:
"They are probably doing it for good reason. Those guys are very deadly when they can catch and shoot behind the three point line, so obviously they put extra emphasis on it especially after the first two games. We have guys that can make plays off the dribble as well. I think come Thursday we will put this one behind us, step up to the challenge and do the best we can to try and extend this series."
On if it is becoming tiresome to have to come from behind in each of the last three games:
"Anytime you dig yourself a hole it is very difficult to get out, especially against a team that executes as well as the Spurs do. They do not give away opportunities for them to get shots at the basket and that was our Achilles heel tonight."
Stephen Curry
On his performance in tonight's game:
“I was terrible, plain and simple. They outplayed us as a team. Individually I didn’t have anything on either end. (I was) a step slow, my shot wasn’t falling and I was trying to make plays but defensively I lost a little focus. I personally have to be better. You take this with the good games and the bad games. You just have come back and learn from it.”
On his ankle:
“It is sore but I came in feeling good. I was pretty optimistic about how I could play tonight but it didn’t go that way.”
On the Spurs attacking him defensively:
“They were running plays to get Danny Green off screens early in the game. When Tony (Parker) had it up top I let him get to his right and that is his strength. A lack of discipline on my end. I think I held my own in the first four games but tonight I wasn’t locked in. That is inexcusable. This is a big game. I dropped the ball.”
On their energy in tonight's game:
“It is disappointing. You have an opportunity to get a huge game and a huge win on the road and set yourself up for a closeout game. But you don’t play well and they pretty much do everything right. Tough, tough night any way you slice it. We learn from it but are quick to forget about it going into next game.”
On the Spurs defense:
“We just missed shots. Early in the game I got a little off balance a couple (times) trying to get a foul. They play good defense. We didn’t get into a rhythm. We just missed shots. (Jarrett) Jack and Harrison (Barnes) played great offensively and defensively. They had big games and kept us in it. Klay (Thompson) and I have to be better for us to get where we are trying to go.”
Andrew Bogut
On how he's feeling after tonight's game:
“I’m okay. Like I have said many times, everybody is banged up at this point. There is no point in me sitting here crying about injuries.”
On having to win two straight games to win the series:
“It is a tough one but any road win is a tough game. We go back home now and try to tie the series up at 3-3. We can come back here and play. It is not the end of the world for us. It is a tough loss just the way we lost. We ran out of steam and those things happen. A similar situation happened to us in Denver for Game 5 and we bounced back. I anticipate going back to Oakland and bouncing back.”
On the 50-50 balls going the Spurs way:
“I agree with that. They outplayed us in every facet of the game tonight. We turned the ball over a lot. They won the rebound battle. They shot the ball from over 50 percent from the field. Of course the high 50’s from three. They went to the free-throw line. They had 20 or 30 assists on 40 field goals or whatever it was. They were moving the ball well. They out-executed us. We didn’t match that the whole game.”
BACK TO SAN ANTONIO
It’s been a wild ride that got us here, but the series is tied 2-2 and the Warriors now head back to San Antonio for Game 5. This marks the first time the Warriors have won two playoff games past the first round since 1977, and the team has shown the fight to extend their season even further. The series now shifts back to the Lone Star State, where the Warriors held the lead during 95 of the 106 total minutes played in Games 1 and 2, although they only came out victorious in that second matchup. Game 5 is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific) on Tuesday and will be broadcast on TNT and KNBR 1050. Warriors Playoff Central
LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors evened the series up at two games apiece on Sunday after defeating the Spurs 97-87 in overtime in Game 4. After trailing for most of the game, the Warriors outscored the Spurs 13-3 in overtime to turn this into a best-of-three series. Harrison Barnes led the Warriors in scoring with a career-high 26 points, and recorded his third double-double of the playoffs after hauling in 10 rebounds. Stephen Curry scored 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting including 5 three-pointers, while Jarrett Jack added 24 points of his own, several of which came during crunch time.
OWNING THE BOARDS
When looking at areas of improvement of this Warriors team compared with others from the past, it doesn’t take a basketball scholar to pinpoint the team’s work on the glass. The Warriors were the top defensive rebounding team in the NBA during the regular season, securing 75.5 percent of opponents’ missed shots, and that has translated in the playoffs, especially in this series. The Warriors have out-rebounded the Spurs in each of the first four games of the Western Conference semifinals, including a plus-14 advantage in Sunday’s Game 4 win. Responsible for a large chunk of that success has been Andrew Bogut. With David Lee, the NBA’s sixth leading rebounder during the regular season, severely limited by injury in the playoffs, Bogut has stepped up big time. He pulled down 18 rebounds on Sunday for his fifth straight game with 10-plus rebounds. Bogut’s performance on Sunday was particularly impressive considering early foul trouble limited him to just 28 minutes. Rebounding alone won’t win any games for the Warriors, but they can certainly put themselves in good position if they continue to limit San Antonio’s offensive opportunities.
PICKING ON PARKER
After shooting 49.4 percent from the field in their first round playoff series, the Warriors’ offense has slowed down in the second round, especially over the last two games. Injuries to Stephen Curry and David Lee have certainly contributed to that, but stellar perimeter defense from Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green can’t be ignored either. After Klay Thompson went off for 34 points in Game 2, he has been held to 27 points on 12-for-33 shooting over the last two games and fellow Splash Brother Stephen Curry is just 12-for-32 in that stretch. But if there is a weak link in an otherwise strong Spurs defense, it’s Tony Parker. The Warriors have repeatedly gone at Parker in their offensive sets, no matter who he is guarding. Harrison Barnes and Klay Thompson have both become go-to options when posting up on the All-Star guard, and Stephen Curry knocked down multiple 3-pointers on Sunday when matched up with Parker. Look for the Warriors to continue to exploit that matchup on offense, but also keep in mind that Spurs have recognized that and will make the adjustment.
JACK IN THE CLUTCH
No Warrior has hit more big shots this season than Jarrett Jack. One of the most productive reserves in the NBA this season – he finished third in the league’s Sixth Man of the Year Award voting – Jack was at it again on Sunday. He scored six-straight Warriors points in a span of 69 seconds in the fourth quarter as the Warriors came back from an eight-point deficit late in the fourth quarter on Sunday, and he scored 12 of his 24 points in the game’s final 17 minutes (fourth quarter and overtime). His 61 playoff points in the fourth quarter and overtime are the fourth most in the NBA, behind only Nate Robinson, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant. Playoff basketball often comes down to who performs best in clutch time, and the Warriors will continue to rely on Jack when the game matters most.
