(Series Tied 1-1)
Series tied! Streak over! The Warriors evened the series up at one game apiece on Wednesday after defeating the Spurs 100-91 in Game 2, snapping a streak of 30-straight losses on San Antonio’s home court. Klay Thompson played his best game as a pro, notching a double-double after scoring a career-high 34 points including a new franchise record 8 three-pointers. Stephen Curry added 22 points, as the Splash Brothers outscored the Spurs’ starting backcourt 56-30. Harrison Barnes and Carl Landry both scored in double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Warriors now head home to Oracle Arena where they’ll host Game 3 on Friday night. Game 2 Reaction Blog
Mark Jackson
On Klay Thompson and Defending Tony Parker:
“I told him at halftime that is in the discussion, one of the greatest halves ever. Not only what he did offensively, but what he did defensively. If you slow it down and see the multiple effort plays and the attention to detail defensively, he is playing a future hall of famer and he’s making him work for everything. That’s a tough task but offensively, I have the greatest shooting backcourt that’s ever played the game and call my bluff.”
On the stragegy when losing the lead in the third and fourth quarters:
“I truly believe that trials and tribulations are transportation for where you’re going. Game 1 made us better. We didn’t panic. We made plays. That’s a heck of basketball team, that’s extremely well coached and has no quit in them. We don’t have any quit in us either. The bottom line is we made the plays we needed to make. We rebounded and took care of the basketball. This is a process and I’m not going to panic at any point in the process. I know it is making us better. This is an incredible group of guys I have and I’m honored and blessed to be able to coach them.”
On the takeaways from the first two games in San Antonio:
“I don’t take anything out of them. I knew it would be a great heavyweight championship fight. Two teams that battle and it’s in their DNA to compete. I just think this is far from over with. I’m happy because at the end of the game, people are recognizing who my guys are. We have no business where we are and it truly is great to see because they deserve a lot of credit. They put a lot of hours in and they’re an all-time great group of guys. I watch TV all day and people talked about how we were going to be coming in with our heads down and the blows that we received. The reason why they were saying that is because they are new to watching us. Adversity is not new to us. This is a battle-tested team. It’s going to be a great series.”
Klay Thompson
On the defense he played on Tony Parker:
"It was a collective thing tonight. We did it as a team. I tried to use my length as much as I could to bother him. He is one of the best point guards to score in the paint probably in the history of the NBA so I just tried to make him shoot tough contested jumpers over me."
On if fouling out in Game 1 helped lead to this performance:
"It was. My dad is my biggest critic but every single game he tells me to stay out of foul trouble, so I probably gave him hemorrhoids the other night. I though I did a good job tonight of not making dumb fouls like I did in Game 1. I just tried to play as hard as I could."
On the process of getting over the Game 1 loss:
"It was tough losing Game 1 because I felt like I was barely out there due to foul trouble, even though I did play 32 minutes, but being in foul trouble and watching from the bench is one of the hardest things to do. I thought I showed that I learned from that tonight. This is what I have to do the rest of the series, play aggressive and not make any dumb fouls."
On if he would be worried about being labeled a defensive specialist after this performance:
"No, I would not mind. I try to be the most complete player I can be. I'm not just a shooter-scorer but I try to perfect my defense as well. I worked out everyday last summer and I feel it is really paying dividend this year."
Stephen Curry
On watching Klay Thompson's first half performance:
"It was amazing. With the shots he was hitting and going 8-for-9 from the three-point line is unheard of. He was aggressive and confident in every shot he took. Even when coach (Mark Jackson) was trying to pull him out he couldn't because Klay was feeling it.”
On Klay's complete effort tonight:
“You ride a guy who is feeling that hot. When he is in rhythm, even with a hand in his face, he was knocking them down. It was a lot of fun to watch him get us that big lead in the first half but like he said he did it on both ends of the court. Coach Jackson complimented him at halftime that a lot of people where going to talk about his shooting performance but the way he bothered Tony (Parker) was a solid complete performance."
On the mindset late in the game with the lead slipping away:
"Coach Jackson told us to have amnesia at halftime and that is basically it. We are a young team so that might help that we can forget about it and keep playing and have fun. We know we are on the road against a great veteran basketball team. We know that it is going to eventually happen but we knew that we could not let it rattle us and we kept our composure."
A CHANCE AT REDEMPTION
After squandering the chance to start off the series with a win in Game 1’s 129-127 double overtime loss on Monday, the Warriors have another shot at leaving San Antonio with the series tied when Game 2 tips off on Wednesday night. Leading by 16 points with four and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Golden State showed their youth and repeated what has become an increasingly disturbing trend, allowing the Spurs to go on an 18-2 run to close the quarter and send the game into overtime. Up until that point, the Warriors had played brilliantly, but San Antonio’s savvy veterans helped pull them even, and eventually, lead them to victory in double OT. Although it was a crushing loss for the Warriors, they’ll need to move on from it quickly with Game 2 fast approaching on Wednesday. The game tips of at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific) and will be broadcasted on TNT and KNBR 680. For full details and in-depth coverage, make sure to check out Warriors Playoff Central.
JUST STEPH IT
You know you’re doing some pretty impressive things when you do your best Michael Jordan impression and it just seems like another day at the office. That’s exactly what Stephen Curry did on Monday night, becoming the first player since Jordan to have 44 points and 11 assists in a playoff game, further cementing his arrival in the land of NBA superstardom. Once again he utilized a blistering hot third quarter to help put the Warriors in position to win the game, erupting for 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. In seven career playoff games, Curry is now a ridiculous 32-of-46 (.696) from the field and 17-of-26 (.654) on 3-pointers in the third frame. And while his frequent displays of his phenomenal shooting prowess are certainly a welcome sight for the Warriors, it’s important that they don’t become too reliant on his incendiary streaks. Too often down the stretch of the fourth quarter did the offense become stagnant with all players looking to Curry, which made it easier for the Spurs to defend him, and ultimately, stage one of the biggest comeback in playoff history. In order to prevent such a repeat occurrence, Curry and company will need to do a better job of sharing the load and playing as a team, which was the primary reason they had such a big lead in the first place.
WHEN KLAY PLAYS
Perhaps the greatest reason for the Warriors big lead midway through the fourth quarter was the play of Klay Thompson, specifically on the defensive end. Thompson received the defensive assignment on Spurs star point guard Tony Parker, and proved more than equal to the task as Parker was just 4-of-14 from the field through the first three quarters. But when Thompson was forced to leave the game after picking up his sixth foul and final foul with 3:57 left in regulation, the game immediately changed and Parker suddenly caught his rhythm. The perennial All-Star went 3-for-3 and had eight points in the fourth quarter after Thompson fouled out. In order for the Warriors to have a chance at winning Game 2 and heading back home with the series tied, it’s likely that Thompson’s defense on Parker will play a key role. Although he’s made tremendous strides on the defensive end this season, Thompson has to realize he can’t help the team when he’s sitting on the bench, so staying away from unnecessary fouls will be essential to his development, as well as the Warriors remaining playoff chances.
YEARS VS. YOUTH
While the Game 1 loss will certainly sting for awhile longer, it’s important to remember that this is a best-of-seven series, and it can’t be lost in one night. With that in mind, don’t overlook the significance of the game going into double overtime, or even merely the Warriors giving reason to believe that this series could go longer than most pundits anticipated. One of the Spurs’ main advantages coming into the series was their abundance of playoff experience and aged veterans who have been through almost every high-intensity situation possible. But on the other hand, that advantage could also be cause for concern. San Antonio’s veterans would be expected to tire quicker than the spry, young Warriors, so the longer the series goes, and the more strenuous each individual game is, the more likely the Spurs’ stars are to wear down. However, that philosophy isn’t full-proof, as it isn’t as if the likes of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, young as they may be, don’t wear down themselves. Curry played all but four seconds of Game 1, and it showed as he struggled with his jump shot down the stretch. If the Warriors have any chance at outlasting the favored Spurs in this series, they’ll need to find ways to get their key players some rest, while continuing to get production out of the subs on the court. Less than 48 hours after the Game 1 debacle, it will be interesting to see how much energy the young Warriors have when Game 2 tips off on Wednesday night.
COACHING ADJUSTMENTS
Gregg Popovich is often considered one of, if not the best coaches in the league, and the way Game 1 ended was a perfect example why. Even down by 16 points with four and a half minutes left, Popovich and his team never gave up hope and never relented. Having been through these types of situations before in their many trips to the playoffs together, the Spurs know what it takes to win at this time of year, and executed perfectly when it mattered most. Whether it was the Danny Green three-pointer to send the game into overtime, or the Manu Ginobli dagger that ended it, San Antonio was continually able to get the shot they wanted, while the Warriors could not. And while no one should realistically expect a relatively inexperienced coach in Mark Jackson to match the heralded Popovich move-for-move, he’ll have to find a better way to get more out of his team when the game is on the line. Jackson has now witnessed his team undergo two separate collapses of major proportions in their last two games, and will need to rectify that disturbing trend if they hope to make it past the Spurs. If the Warriors have a lead late in Game 2, they better make the necessary adjustments in order to maintain it, as San Antonio has already proven they’ll take advantage if you give them life.
