Draft Night With The Warriors
June 29, 2012
The 2012 NBA Draft was held on Thursday, June 28th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Warriors entered the draft with four picks: #7, #30, #35, and #52 overall.
The Warriors Digital department was granted exclusive access to the draft War Room. Warriors fans were given an inside look into the draft process through numerous tweets, videos, and more.
The War Room was the base of operations during the draft for Warriors executives, including Warriors Owner and C.E.O. Joe Lacob, General Manager Bob Myers, Assistant G.M.’s Travis Schlenk and Kirk Lacob, Head Coach Mark Jackson, and Executive Board Member Jerry West.
The Warriors hosted the press at their facility in downtown Oakland to provide first-hand access to the events of the day.
Meanwhile, just down the road, the Warriors hosted their 2012 Draft Party at 3000 Broadway.
Warriors guard Charles Jenkins and center Jeremy Tyler were on hand to sign autographs.
Warrior Girls Thera, Sam, and Lisa were also there to mingle and take pictures with fans.
As the draft picks were announced, Warriors fans at the Draft Party watched with anticipation.
With the 7th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Warriors select…
Harrison Barnes, a 20 year-old sophomore from the University of North Carolina. Barnes is 6’8” and weighs 228 lbs and is widely regarded as one of the premier small forwards in the 2012 draft.
The entire War Room was excited to have picked Barnes…
…and so were the fans!
After the pick was made, Warriors GM Bob Myers held a brief press conference for the media. About Barnes, Myers said, “We’re thrilled. We love this player.”
After the press conference, Myers and the rest of the group went back to work in the War Room to prepare for their next pick.
The Warriors used every available resource to gather information about potential draft picks. Not only is there constant communication between all the NBA teams during the draft, but also within the individual teams themselves.
With the 30th pick in the first round, the Warriors selected center Festus Ezeli.
The 22 year-old center stands 6’11” and weighs 265 lbs. As to how he sees himself contributing to the Warriors: “I will do whatever I have to do–I will run through a wall,” Ezeli said on his conference-call.
Warriors fans at the Draft Party were excited to get the big man from Vanderbilt Universtity.
Warriors executives relied upon countless hours of scouting and analysis to create their “Big Board”.
With the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Warriors selected Michigan State forward Draymond Green.
The 22 year-old Green is 6’7” and weighs 235 lbs. This past season at Michigan State, he was named a consensus First Team All-American, the Big Ten Player of the Year, and the NABC Division I Player of the Year.
As a treat for the fans, Warriors legends Al Attles and Nate Thurmond attended the Draft Party and shared their thoughts on the Warriors picks.
With the 52nd overall pick, their fourth and final of the 2012 NBA Draft, the Warriors selected Ognjen Kuzmic from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
