Stephen Jackson Summer Interview

As Warriors PR mentioned in their blog entry on Friday, Stephen Jackson is his hometown of Port Arthur, TX this week, and he's going to be very busy. Jackson will be launching his own charitable foundation – THE JACK 1 FOUNDATION. Over the next few days, he will take part in a series of events, including a grand re-opening of the Stephen Jackson Academy of Arts, Science and Technology, a Jack 1 Foundation launch dinner and a basketball clinic for local youth.

Prior to the official launch of his foundation, Jackson took the time to speak to me not only about his efforts in the community, but about his thoughts on the Warriors' busy offseason and much more. You can listen to the interview by clicking the link below:

DEADLINE DAY

Baron Davis had all of ORACLE Arena rocking after hitting last night's game-winner. (Jed Jacobsohn/NBAE/Getty)

LAST NIGHT
What a game last night as the Warriors beat the Boston Celtics on a last-second shot by Baron Davis, which certainly got me excited...

LISTEN HERE

This game once again, showed the resiliency of the Warriors, as they bounced back to win after a disappointing loss to Utah. More impressive was the fact that they did it without Stephen Jackson, against the team that could very well win the East this season.

NO TRADE
The deadline has passed and the Warriors did not make a deal. Chris Mullin has repeatedly said in the past that he will not make a trade just to move someone. He will make a deal only if it makes sense.

The Hornets and the Rockets were involved in a curious three-team deal that moved Bobby Jackson to Houston. If Jackson is healthy, then advantage Rockets.

The three-team trade involving Chicago, Cleveland and Seattle is a dice roll that the Cavs had to take. Chicago gets out from under Ben Wallace’s deal, but are they any better? Seattle gets expiring contracts as they continue to rebuild.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS
… And you thought the Mavs’ Devean George would never be an impact player.

…The trade for Mike Bibby to Atlanta is a good dice roll for a team in the East that needs to make the playoffs, and they gave up very little, including Shelden Williams.

… All-Star Weekend was one of the better ones in recent memory - the Superman cape of Orlando’s Dwight Howard, Utah’s Deron Williams in the Skills Competition, San Antonio’s Tim Duncan hitting a half court shot, Ray Allen’s’ shooting in the game on Sunday, the great music (Dr.John!!!), the great piece on TNT on Pistol Pete Maravich, the charitable works. It was quite a show.

The West is getting better, bigger and deeper.

THE ROSTER
STEPHEN JACKSON — He’s trying to heal that nagging left ankle. Click here to read a great article in ESPN the Magazine by Rich Bucher on the upbringing of Stack Jack.
AL HARRINGTON — He’s being much more aggressive and carries the team with his shot when things bog down.
ANDRIS BIEDRINS — Will undergo surgery tonight (appendectomy) and will be out indefinitely ... a big blow for the Warriors.
BARON DAVIS — He has not been himself lately, but with the game on the line, he came through against the Celtics.
MONTA ELLIS — No one finishes at the hole better than him right now. He’s also shooting the midrange jumper as well as anyone in the game.
CHRIS WEBBER — He’s starting to round into shape. He had three blocks versus Boston.
MICKAEL PIETRUS — His best game of the year was against Boston, and despite rumors, he remains a Warrior.
MATT BARNES — He had a mental error versus Boston, but had a huge bucket that helped Golden State to the victory.
KELENNA AZUBUIKE — I still believe he will be a rotation guy before the year is over. He is highly regarded by personnel people around the league.
AUSTIN CROSHERE — He’s finally fully recovered from back problems.

And to round it out, all of these guys are biding their time, working on their games

MAILBAG

Monta Ellis has become one of the NBA's premiere finishers at the rim. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
Question
Tim,
What’s the difference between Monta Ellis last year and this year? Why is he playing so well this season?
Leslie,
Montgomery, Alabama

Answer
Leslie,
That is a good question, and one that I posed to Baron Davis.
Here is what he had to say
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
In what game situations or match-ups do you think we might see Andris and Webber on the floor at the same time, with Andris at center and Webber at forward? I know it's a bit early to make such predictions, but put yourself in Nellie’s shoes for a moment and try and create a scenario in which this lineup might be beneficial to the Warriors.
Thanks,
Mike Hall
Oakland, Ca

Answer
Michael,
I think we saw last night what the two can do on the floor at the same time, and it's a shame that Andris will now miss some time. When healthy, Andris has to be in the mix and playing more than 20 minutes per game. He is long and active and one of the few Warriors players that can rebound close to the basket on the offensive end. It will be Webber at the high post and Biedrins posting up down low and then coming up for the high pick and roll.
Take Care,
Tim

Question
Hi Tim!
Do players get paid "overtime" for playing in overtime? I know that most people get paid more for overtime but does this also apply to players?
Thanks,
Arlene (San Francisco)

Answer
Arlene,
The players are paid on a per game basis, but they are taxed differently depending on where the games are played as each state has a different tax breakdown. So, they are paid for a game no matter if they get in the game and no matter how long that game lasts.
Thanks,
Tim

Chris Webber is continuing to work his way into game shape. (Melissa Majchrzak/NBAE/Getty)
Question
Hi Tim,
Great job on the broadcasts. I am holding off judgment on Webber until he gets in shape. One thought on the recent trades in the West: Why weren't the W's involved? We could have offered comparable deals so why not? I really wished we landed Gasol. Also, do you think the Warriors should have dealt for a ball handler or distributor? One last question: Do you think the limited amount of playing time for Brandan Wright, Patrick O’Bryant and Kosta Perovic is slowing their development?
Keep Cool,
Rich in DC

Answer
Rich,
C-Webb will be fine once he gets into shape and I understand what they are trying to do there with Chris at the high post. The deadline has passed and they have not made a deal for a ball handler and I think the reason is they are confident in the strides that Monta has made and in my opinion, when C.J. Watson is on the floor, he doesn't hurt them. As far as Gasol goes, the Warriors did not have the expiring contract that the Grizzlies wanted and L.A. was willing to pay the cash that the Grizzlies needed. The big guys will now get a chance by default. Yes, C-Webb will get his 20 minutes a night, but Biedrins is out indefinitely. So Perovic, O'Bryant and Wright will apparently be pressed into service, but don’t forget that big men take longer to develop.
Take Care,
Tim

Question
Tim,
What do you think of C-Webb’s performance so far? Do you think he’s too rusty and out of shape to keep up with the Warriors?
Bill Pope

Answer
Bill,
I think that C-Webb is playing himself into shape and the last two games have been much better than the previous few. The greatest thing about the Webber deal is that the roster was in favor of adding him to the mix and it didn't cost the Warriors anything but the cost of Troy Hudson's contract.
Thanks for the e-mail,
Tim

WHAT A WIN!

Baron Davis finished with 23 points and nine assists against his former team last night. (Chris Graythen/NBAE/Getty)
Last night's victory over New Orleans was, I think, the biggest win of the season. It was on the road, against the team with the best record in the Western Conference, coming off a tough loss the night before and with Baron Davis suffering from the flu.

The road trip showed the importance of getting off to a good start as the poor first quarter in Houston led to a loss while the good first quarter in New Orleans set the tone for the win.

FRIDAY VERSUS CHARLOTTE
What a show Friday will be, with the return of Chris Webber, plus the only Bay Area appearance of old friend Jason Richardson. Webber’s return closes a chapter and opens another, while hopefully improving the team. I really see Webber helping the team run things in the half court, utilizing his passing and his mid-range shooting. As for J-Rich, what can you say about a guy that works and plays as hard as he does? In an era of guaranteed contracts, the guys who improve year-to-year are the ones that have that hunger, and I hope he never loses it. He is one of my favorite guys as well. Oh and one more surprise, the Bobcats have signed Earl Boykins for the rest of the year.

NO FLOPPING!!
When I saw Yao Ming try and take a charge the other night, I realized how big this craze has become. There is no way a 7’6 center should try and take a charge on a much smaller opponent driving to the basket. What in the name of Wilt the Stilt are we doing? I would love to see more players stay on their feet, play defense and just lock up their man.

ROUNDTABLE TONIGHT
Warriors Radio Roundtable airs tonight on KNBR 680 at 9:00 p.m. We'll be airing the show live, so make you sure listen and call in with any questions. The show will also feature several of the Warriors' reactions following Chris Webber's first practice today. If you can't listen to the show tonight, check out our Roundtable page tomorrow and listen to every segment.

Al Harrington is shooting higher than 40% from three-point range once again this season. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
THE ROSTER
BARON DAVIS — He gutted out the road trip while under the weather and is playing at a very high level.
STEPHEN JACKSON — His performance in New Orleans was, in my opinion, his most complete game as a Golden State Warrior.
MONTA ELLIS — Is anyone in the league getting to the basket as quickly and as often as #8? He is giving us a WOW moment every night.
AL HARRINGTON — He does not hang his head while going through a tough shooting night, as witnessed by his fourth quarter resurgence in Houston.
ANDRIS BIEDRINS — 26 boards (against New York) is quite a lot. I know he is very young, but that could be his career-best.
MATT BARNES — He’s back! And he’s playing with the abandon that makes him an NBA player and a good Warrior.
MICKAEL PIETRUS — He seems to be struggling in all areas and can’t stay out of foul trouble, though he is often guarding guys much bigger than himself.
KELENNA AZUBUIKE — When he pulls down 5+ rebounds; he has scored 10+ points 15 out of 18 times.
C.J. WATSON — He’s a good kid…who had to buy everyone lunch in Houston to celebrate the signing of his contract for the rest of the season.
MARCO BELINELLI — Next year might be the year of the Italian Rifle.
BRANDAN WRIGHT — He did well versus the Hornets, and I still think he will be a contributor during this season.
KOSTA PEROVIC — The best thing about his run in the first half in Milwaukee was his composure, and his ability to keep up with the game
PATRICK O’BRYANT — He’s having trouble getting on the floor, but he’s still working on his game every day.
AUSTIN CROSHERE — Rehabbing the back injury might keep him on the sideline for a while.
CHRIS WEBBERC-Webb is back and I can’t wait to see what he can do for this team.

Question
Tim,
What does Chris Webber bring at this stage of his career and are the players fired up about it??
Roger (Mill Valley)

Answer
Roger,
There is a skill package that Chris Webber brings to the table that the Warriors can use. He is one of the best passers in NBA history for a man his size. However, rather than have me explain what others have said, check out these three responses:

Chris Mullin on what Webber brings to the Warriors

Stephen Jackson on having Webber as a teammate

Thanks,
Tim

Chris Webber's passing will be a welcome entity for the Warriors. (NBAE/Getty)
Question
Hi Tim,
Why does Patrick O’Bryant receive so little playing time? He's not listed as inactive or as having some injury. What is the problem? Thanks.
Mike (Vallejo)

Answer
Mike,
Patrick’s play has been inconsistent, and a coach has to trust his players off the bench and wants to have an idea of how a player will play coming off the bench. The signing of Chris Webber will further reduce the chance of Patrick getting a lot of playing time, so it could be a hard second half for POB.
Thanks and take care,
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
I listen all the time and constantly hear you refer to “the elbow.” I would like to know what you mean by that.
Thank you
Kim (Cupertino)

Answer
Nick,
Thanks for the query. The elbow is the area where the foul line intersects the line that runs from the baseline to the foul line, thereby creating the lane or the paint. Over the years, it has meant the area just beyond it as well. I try to give as many visual clues as I can, so that you can truly see it on the radio. Thanks and I hope you keep listening.
Thanks,
Tim

WHAT A NIGHT

Monta Ellis provided lots of excitement during a magical night at ORACLE Arena. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
Last nights’ game against Phoenix was exciting, playoff-like and one of the best November games I have ever seen. The fans at ORACLE Arena were outstanding, creating a great home court advantage for the Warriors on Monday night. The great thing about you, as fans, is that you know the game and you cheer at your own pace, and not just when prompted by a video board.

ROAD TRIP
The 4-1 road trip was the best in years and should give this team some confidence for the rest of the season when not at ORACLE Arena. Check out some audio highlights of the Warriors Turkey Week victory march by clicking here.

PRIZE PACKS
Any e-mail sent to Tim Roye’s Journal that is read on the air will result in that person receiving a Warriors Prize Pack. I will try and read e-mails during the games, at halftime and on the Postgame Roundtable. I will also continue to read e-mails on the weekly Warriors Radio Roundtable. To send me your questions, click here.

Stephen Jackson has provided the Warriors a tremendous lift since returning to the team. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
THE ROSTER
MATT BARNES — great to see him return to the floor in what has been a tough time for his family.
AL HARRINGTON — seems to knock down shots right off the opening tip to help set the tone.
ANDRIS BIEDRINS — did not play major role versus Phoenix, but told me on the road trip that he would like to average a double-double.
BARON DAVIS — what can you say, he has been outstanding.
STEPHEN JACKSON — crowd favorite, glue guy and defensive catalyst.
MONTA ELLIS — tied career high with 31 in back-to-back games.
KELENNA AZUBUIKE — game winner in Philly was sweet and it showed the confidence that his teammates have in him.
AUSTIN CROSHERE — his back has healed and he contributed in spot duty on road trip.
MARCO BELINELLI — has had trouble getting off bench in last couple of games.
BRANDAN WRIGHT — fourth-quarter run in Boston did not mean much to game but a lot to him.
MICKAEL PIETRUS — had a couple of great steals in game against the Suns.
KOSTA PEROVIC — does he like C&W music in Bakersfield?
PATRICK O’BRYANT — has split back-up time with DJ Mbenga.
DJ MBENGA — he’s big and knows how to protect the basket.
TROY HUDSON — should be ready to go in Sacramento.

Question
Tim,
Do you think that Stephen Jackson has left his troubles in Indiana? I really like him but I am worried about the rest of the season.
Bob in Foster City

Answer
Bob,
The worries should be set aside for now, as he has been everything you would want since coming over from Indiana. In fact, don’t just take my word for it; check out this warriors.com feature story. In addition, I spoke to Marc Emmons, the fine writer from the San Jose Mercury News who recently wrote about Captain Jack. To listen to our conversation, click here.
Thanks,
Tim

DJ Mbenga gives the Warriors another capable big man to back up Andris Biedrins. (Nick Laham/NBAE/Getty)
Question
Hi Tim,
Did the Warriors cut someone?
Go Warriors,
Phillip

Answer
Phillip,
The Warriors recently waived forward Stephane Lasme from UMass and signed center DJ Mbenga, who had been cut by Dallas. The reasoning here was that the Warriors have a number of players who can play the two, three or four, and they wanted another legitimate five to back-up Andris Biedrins. You can also look at it this way: They have picked up six additional fouls for when they play Yao, Shaq, Duncan and the rest of the great big men in the league.
Thanks and take care,
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
I just heard a rumor that the Knicks might consider hiring Chris Mullin if they fire Isiah Thomas. Could you see Mullin leaving anytime soon?
Good job,
Nick in Rohnert Park

Answer
Nick,
I was on Amtrak heading from my parents home in Connecticut to Washington to catch up with the team last Friday when I read the New York Posts' latest offering. The Post sports section is as close to tabloid as you are going to get in this country, and they have no problem blowing up innuendo into actual story. I think that was the case here. I was intrigued by the story as you might imagine, but when it fleshed out to be a friend of a friend of a friend, I discounted it immediately. The credibility was entirely shattered when they misspelled the name of Warriors owner Chris Cohan. Case closed.
Thanks,
Tim

Two Weeks

Despite their slow start, the Warriors know there is a lot of basketball left to be played. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
The first two weeks of the season are complete and the Warriors are 0-5. Before the panic sets in, let’s review some facts.

First, four of the five losses have come to teams that have won 50 or more games from a year ago. They have played good teams that are not taking the W’s lightly and of course, this has all been without the services of Stephen Jackson. On the other hand, there have been winnable games in which the Warriors did not wind up with the victory. They cannot afford to let any more of those slip away, starting with a very good Detroit team that comes to town on Wednesday night.

ROOKIES

The Warriors have a bunch of them, and from Head Coach Don Nelson’s comments, it appears that he will be using Belinelli at some point in the near future. I also truly believe that Brandan Wright will be a factor for the team this season.

IT’S YOUR LUCKY DAY

I tend to read e-mails from time to time on our radio broadcasts, either as part of the Radio Roundtable show or as part of our halftime or postgame shows. Your questions are good and they add to the broadcast. As a result, I wanted to give you something in return for your support of the NBA, the Warriors and my efforts. Henceforth, if I read one of your questions on the air, you will receive a Warriors Prize Pack. The prizes will not be negotiable, and I hope you appreciate my saying ‘Thank You’ to the best fans in the Bay Area and the NBA.

MUST SEE

You must check out TNT overtime on NBA.com and watch the Frank Caliendo segment. He is awesome and I played it back three or four time to get the full affect. WATCH IT HERE

THE ROSTER

Stephen Jackson - Despite what people think, he is the W’s glue guy.
Kelenna Azubuike - Wow, what a start and he just gets better and better. I love how he takes the ball to the hole. His free throw shooting will come around.
Mickael Pietrus - Missed the Dallas game with the flu; they could have used his defense.
Andris Biedrins - Only downside is at the line, everything else will be good.
Baron Davis - The Dallas game was special. He needs help so that his minutes will not hurt him later this year.
Monta Ellis - Needs to hit free throws. Nailed his three pointers versus Cleveland.
Matt Barnes - Starting to come around and then he hurts his finger. His toughness is without question.
Austin Croshere - Mild disc inflammation has him sidelined.
Al Harrington - Finishing strong at the hole and you have to love his effort.
Troy Hudson – When healthy, I think he will help off the bench, but will need to hit shots.
Stephane Lasme - Patiently waiting for his chance, which will showcase his athleticism.
Patrick O’Bryant - No question, he has improved, now he has to make a a positive impact when he comes in.
Kosta Perovic – Might benefit from getting some playing time at Bakersfield in the NBDL.
Brandan Wright - Length, intelligence and a nice mid-range touch.

Mailbag

Question
Tim,
The Warriors have struggled so far at the free throw line. Are they working on improving?
Bob in Alameda

Answer
Bob,
The team most definitely puts the time in at practice. The disappointing aspect to the Dallas loss was that those who missed several free throws are solid shooters. They were better in the preseason and I think they will be better this year as a whole.
Thanks,
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
Just a quick question. What is the number of players that make up the regular season roster?
Thanks,
Ron in Santa Rosa

Answer
Ron,
The maximum a team can have is 15 overall players and 12 active for any one game. As the Warriors had 15 players under contract entering camp, it would have taken a special camp by one of the invitees to make the team cut a guaranteed deal.
Thanks for the interest,
Tim

Patrick O'Bryant has been showing steady improvements ever since Training Camp. (Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
Question
Tim,
Nice work on Warriors Radio Roundtable. Over the years you folks have done a great job. You all must have been having fun with last year's Warriors, and I presume you’re looking forward to more fun this year.

My question: A year ago I asked you whether Patrick O’Bryant was going to improve. You replied that big men take time. I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of O’Bryant in the early games. I saw some of that earlier speed, agility and positioning (and he sunk a hook!. I think he should get more playing time. Your thoughts?
Jim

Answer
Jim,
Patrick O'Bryant is without question very improved from a year ago, but I will go back to my original statement that big guys take time. It took Andris Biedrins three years to figure out how he needed to play and he is just fine. I think Patrick needs to get stronger, especially in the lower body and needs to be a terror on the boards. His offense is fine and I love the jump hook. I will be curious to see how much time he gets this year.
Thanks for the e-mail,
Tim

Question
Tim,
What do you see Al Harrington’s role being this season? Will Nellie play him at center?
Alexis in Burlingame

Answer
Alexis,
I think Harrington’s role changes from game to game, with the exception of rebounding, which he has to do every night. Al was my recent guest on Warriors Radio Roundtable. Please check it out!

Radio Roundtable
The first edition of this season’s Warriors Radio Roundtable premiered on Wednesday night and among my guests were team tri-Captain Matt Barnes and Head Coach Don Nelson. You can listen to those interviews by clicking here.

Our next Radio Roundtable will air on Wednesday night, October 24, and our next game broadcast will come to you from Seattle on Tuesday (7 p.m.). That broadcast can be heard on KNBR 1050 in the Bay Area. If you can’t get 1050 in your area, you can listen to the game at NBA.com absolutely free.

Preseason
These are the dog days of Training Camp, the point where the players, for the most part, are ready to go. The exception would be the rookies, who are still getting used to the pace of the NBA game, learning the plays, the officials and their teammates.

Hopefully, the Warriors won't suffer any more injuries between now and October 30, when they host Utah to open the season.

Kobe
I have taken a number of e-mails from fans who ask me about the potential of getting Kobe Bryant from the Lakers. First, I don’t believe they will trade him, unless they get a great deal. Second, I don’t think that if they do move him, they would move him to a team inside their own division. Third, if you have to gut your team to get him, then aren’t you in the same spot that the Lakers are in, having a tough time finding the sidekick that he needs?

Stephane Lasme has shown tremendous activity during his brief stint with the Warriors. (D. Clarke Evans/NBAE/Getty)
Mailbag

Question
Tim,
How has Stephane Lasme looked in his first few preseason games, and where does he currently fit in with the Warriors? Thanks for the excellent coverage of training camp so far.
Cheers,
Patrick

Answer
Patrick,
Stephane has looked active in training camp and played last night in the loss to San Antonio. He is an incredible athlete who can jump and has good timing. He is an x-factor right now, and if the Warriors get anything from him, it will be a bonus. His playing time may hinge on rebounding. If he rebounds well, he will get time.
Thanks for the kind words,
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
After watching the preseason game against the Lakers, it seems like Mickael Pietrus picks up a lot of fouls in a short amount of time. Do you think Nellie will address this before the regular season starts? Has Pietrus made any improvements to his game since last year?
Thanks,
Ken

Answer
Ken,
Yes, that is a problem for Mickael. He sometimes challenges a little too much one on one. The coaching staff is constantly working with him on that and the other subtleties of playing defense in the NBA. Don't forget that he was guarding Kobe Bryant, which contributed to the number of foul calls in such a short time.
Take Care,
Tim

The addition of Sidney Moncrief to the coaching staff should boost the Warriors free-throw percentage. (photo: Monique Saenz)
Question
Tim,
I (like everyone else) am looking forward to another season of excitement, but I would like to see the Warriors improve upon their free-throw percentage. Every pro should be shooting at least 75-80 percent. I remember Calvin Murphy and Mike Newlin of the Houston Rockets ending each practice with 100 consecutive made free throws, or starting over with each miss! They even stated that every pro that doesn't shoot 80 percent should apologize to their coaches for someday getting them fired. Do you see the same dedication to this facet of the game from the current group of W's?
Go Warriors!
Stan Wong

Answer
Stan,
There is no doubt that the Warriors postseason story would have been different if they could have hit a few free throws in Utah. I can say that they are working hard in that department with the addition of Shooting Coach Sidney Moncrief. Check out the interview I did with Sidney in Hawaii on the Warriors Radio Roundtable page.
Thanks for the e-mail,
Tim

Preseason Thoughts

Monta Ellis began running at the team's practice facility on Tuesday. (photo: Monique Saenz)
The Warriors’ second win in Hawaii was impressive in that Head Coach Don Nelson played his bench players and received solid performances from Kelenna Azubuike, Marco Belinelli and Patrick O’Bryant.

Their loss to the Clippers was as bad a game as we have seen in quite some time and served as a reminder that this team will not win by just showing up. There was not much to take from their latest outing on Monday, as the opponents were not anything to judge a performance by.

During Thursday’s contest in San Antonio, it will be interesting to see who gets playing time and how much Spurs Head Coach Greg Popovich will play his core.

Monta Ellis started to run at the practice facility on Tuesday and I’m hoping he will be on the practice floor at some time this week. Speaking of Monta, I had a chance to catch up with him before I left Hawaii and got an update on how he was feeling. To listen to the interview, click here.

Crowd
There were a number of ‘We Believe’ T-shirts in the crowd and many Warriors fans throughout Hawaii during the team’s training camp. They were happy to see the W’s in person. I believe that we should make Hawaii an official Warriors territory. Since the University of Hawaii’s nickname is the Warriors, it makes perfect sense. Plus, I’ll use any excuse to head for the islands.

Leaving
It’s always bittersweet to leave Hawaii and I spent a chunk of Thursday afternoon in the water of Waikiki watching everyone have a great time surfing and body-surfing. The day before, some of the Warriors players and staff enjoyed the waves. There is nothing like hitting the waves in Hawaii. That, along with the wonderful Hawaiian spirit, make it hard to jet away. However, the season tasks me, it tasks me.

Question
Aloha Tim,
I haven't seen much of Brandan Wright except in college. It seems to me he is more of a finesse player than a power player. In what you have seen of him, is he explosive? Can we hope to see an Amare type player or more of a Joe Smith? Also, with the latest Kobe news, would the Warriors have enough pieces to acquire him or perhaps be a third party in a trade and pick up a young playmaking point guard, maybe with Portland or Minnesota (i.e. Sebastian Telfair or Jarrett Jack?)
Mahalo,
Rich

Answer
Rich,
Aloha to you, too! Brandan can be explosive, but he is definitely more finesse than power and it is way, way too soon to make a judgment as what player he can be compared to. However, he is a really long player with an incredible wingspan and has a ton of potential. I think the Warriors have enough to be in a conversation, but the Question you have to ask is what you would be willing to give up. I also believe that if you are trading Kobe Bryant, you are not going to deal him inside the Pacific Division. You’d rather ship him East, so that you only see him twice a season. The point of being the third team is intriguing and I know that Chris Mullin is always talking.

Head Coach Don Nelson sees a possible new role for Al Harrington. (photo: Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
Question
Hey Tim,
Thanks for taking the time to Answer all the fans’ Questions. With all the players returning from last year, incoming potential added through the draft or NBDL, and the addition of key veterans, how many players do you see Nellie using in his rotation. I remember last year he was going with an eight-man rotation. This year, it seems like everyone could greatly contribute.
Thanks,
Justin

Answer
Justin,
I think he will use eight or nine guys, but those guys may differ night to night, team to team with the match-ups that will be presented. Check out this Nellie sound bite about the rotation and a potential new role for Al Harrington.

Tim

Question
Tim,
Will the San Antonio game be on the radio?
Bob
Foster City

Answer
Bob,
Alas, no, we will not be on the air from Texas. Our contract with our radio partner states that we can only air four preseason games. We will be on the air from Seattle on Tuesday and again for the final preseason game against the Clippers in Los Angeles. And if you want to see where Warriors regular season games will be broadcast, click here.

The 2007-08 edition of Warriors Radio Roundtable will premiere tonight with special guests Matt Barnes, Head Coach Don Nelson and Shooting Coach Sidney Moncrief. The show begins at 9 p.m. on KNBR 680.
Thanks for your interest,
Tim

Last Night

Troy Hudson provided some fourth-quarter dramatics in his Warriors debut last night. (photo: Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty)
An exciting win for the Warriors as Troy Hudson nailed a jumper with 0.3 seconds remaining to give Golden State a 111-110 victory over the Lakers in a very entertaining preseason opener in Honolulu. In case you missed the call last night - I'll let it slide considering it happened well past midnight in the Bay Area - you can listen to Hudson's game-winner by clicking here.

The Roster
Here is my take of each of the players on the Warriors roster after Tuesday’s preseason action.

Stephen Jackson: Looked good, looked like he was in good shape and he played well.

Al Harrington: Backed up Nellie’s claim as the best player in camp.

Andris Biedrins: Played OK, and was at his opportunistic best when working off other players’ penetration.

Baron Davis: Already looks to be in midseason form.

Kelenna Azubuike: Our Verizon Wireless player of the game on last night’s radio broadcast; it looks like he is ready for a big year. Click here to listen to my call on Kelenna's first-quarter one-handed dunk.

Troy Hudson: My postgame guest on the radio last night … listen to our conversation by clicking here.

Monta Ellis: Held out of action last night because of his neck injury.

Patrick O’Bryant: Had his best run as a Warrior, showing activity, intensity and he used his length as a strength.

Matt Barnes: Didn’t have a great game, but no worries.

Marco Belinelli: Seemed like he was in a hurry, but when open, he’s automatic.

Mickael Pietrus: Mitch Richmond told me on the radio that MP needs to remember defensive rules in switch situations.

Pat Burke: Nine points and five boards in 15 minutes … not bad.

Tierre Brown: Solid night for the back-up point guard.

Austin Croshere: Unselfish defensively, also had the best dunk of the night.

Stephane Lasme: Did not play – coaches decision; hope to seem him Thursday.

Brandan Wright: Ditto.

Kosta Perovic: The same.

Carlos Powell: Should see him Thursday as well.

Kelenna Azubuike will be the everyday starting two-guard if he continues to perform like he did last night. (photo: Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty)

Question
Hi Tim,
Who do you think will start at shooting guard for the Warriors this year, Monta Ellis or Marco Belinelli? Ellis is a very good player and I love his game. On the other hand, I have known about Belinelli and seen him play in Europe even before the Warriors drafted him. I am very happy that the Warriors drafted him – I think he will be a perfect addition to the ever-so-exciting Nellie Ball system.
Thanks,
Jesus

Answer
Jesus,
The 2-guard spot is an intriguing one. Who to start … Monta, Marco or even Kelenna? Don Nelson has lots of options and I think that with Nellie targeting Monta as a point guard, Kelenna still has a shot. If Kelenna is a good 2-guard, then consider the luxury of having a scorer/slasher like Monta paired with a shooter like Bellinelli coming off the bench. That would be an impressive duo to use as bench weapons.
Aloha
Tim

Question
Hi Tim,
I have been keeping track of the Warriors during training camp and I am curious to know about the other rookie. Marco Bellinelli has been getting all the publicity, but Brandan Wright was a higher draft pick. How has Wright looked in training camp, and where does he currently stand on the depth chart?
Rizwan Markar

Answer
Rizwan,
Wright has played OK in camp and like most rookies, he has struggled with the pace and intricacies of a NBA system. He is really long, a good athlete and has a good touch within 15 feet. But he is a raw talent and there’s a chance that we may not really know what kind of player he will be until next year’s camp. His spot on the depth chart is yet to be determined.
Thanks for the e-mail,
Tim

Question
Hi,
Just wanted to say thank you for all the coverage. It’s great to have updates as often as this. Love the training camp blog. Will there be this continued coverage throughout the season? Great work.
Cheers,
Shawn

Answer
Shawn,
Let’s just say that big things are in the works and that you won’t be disappointed. Coverage this season will be thorough and warriors.com will continue to be the place to go for exclusive updates on the team. Thanks for the kind words and thanks to the folks behind the scenes who are working hard on the Web site.

Game Day — 10 p.m. Airtime on 1050AM

Matt Barnes is ready to finally be taking on another team. (photo: Monique Saenz)
FINALLY, it’s here. The first preseason game is where we all get to Answer some of the Questions that we have about this young Warriors squad. There are some legit items out there to be sure.

  • How will the young players fit in?
  • How much will they play?
  • How much progress will Andris and Monta make?
  • Will Baron play 60-70 plus games?
That’s a lot of ?s ... Anyway, as I write this, the team is at shootaround. Before they left, I stopped Matt Barnes and asked him about playing against another team at last. Check out his response by clicking here.

Honolulu
We arrived yesterday afternoon and grabbed some dinner last night on the beach at Waikiki, which is one of the tourist meccas of the world. The diverse population of this city is amazing with the influx of people from across the world, making this an interesting place to people watch.

I also spoke with Al Harrington this morning and he is anxious to go, following a good week of work out at Turtle Bay. To watch video of the interview, click here.

This year's training camp has been a tremendous learning experience for Brandan Wright. (photo: Monique Saenz)
Question
Hi Tim,
First of all, I want to say that I always enjoy listening to you every game. I am a big fan. I am a young journalism student, and I've been covering/writing about the Warriors since I was in junior high school (about 10 yrs ago). It's very refreshing and exciting to see the success/improvement of this team. I'm so glad to see things finally coming together. OK, now to my Question: Coming into the NBA Draft, there were high expectations for Brandan Wright. Do you think he'll make a significant contribution to the Warriors this season? How do you think he'll fit in with this group?
Best wishes this season,
Safiya

Answer
Safiya,
Thanks for the kind words and it's great to chat with a journalism student. The media was around Brandan yesterday and here is what he had to say about his projected impact this season. Hope you enjoy it.
Aloha,
Tim

Question
Hey Tim,
The Warriors, for the first time in years, have a ton of depth at every position. Who can we expect to make the Opening Night, 12-man roster? Jax is out for the first seven games, so of course this will change once he returns, but who can we expect to make that Opening Night roster? Stephane Lasme, Troy Hudson, Austin Croshere and Patrick O’Bryant seem to be all having good camps, but can they really afford to send Brandan Wright to the D-League?
Thanks Tim,
Brad
San Francisco

Answer
Brad,
The Opening Night roster, as my best guess, is as follows (barring injury):
Baron Davis
Monta Ellis
Brandan Wright
Al Harrington
Andris Biedrins
Matt Barnes
Marco Belinelli
Kelenna Azubuike
Troy Hudson
Patrick O'Bryant
Austin Croshere
Mickael Pietrus
.
INACTIVE
.
Stephen Jackson *
Kosta Perovic
Stephane Lasme
* Stephen Jackson will begin serving a league-mandated seven-game suspension when the Warriors open the regular season on Oct. 30.

I'm not sure if they would send Brandan to the D-League, as he has the raw potential to give them some quality minutes this year.
Thanks and Aloha, I hope you’ll be listening tonight.

Monday Morning, Turtle Bay

Like my score, my golfing buddies are not to be made public. (warriors.com photo)
The Warriors are leaving for their final practice on the North Shore before heading to Honolulu for their two preseason games.

I chatted with Warriors Assistant Coach Keith Smart about the progress of the camp and yesterday’s day off. To listen to the interview, click here.

Day Off
Yesterday, everyone got a rare day off. The coaching staff had a golf tournament on the wonderful course at Turtle Bay Resort, home of the Charles Schwab Cup. The results have not been released to the media, but I believe that the head coach ended up winning the contest.

I also played some golf yesterday, but the results of that outing are not in the public domain and my fellow participants are sworn to secrecy.

The players went a different route, as they took part in a game of paintball. It seemed like everyone had a good time and some of the guys actually drew up plays and strategies to further their success.

I have this vision, though, of a 6’11 Andris Biedrins trying to hide behind a barrier to keep from getting hit. That seems humorous.

Question
Hi Tim,
Do the Warriors have any plans for Zarko Cabarkapa or Pierre Pierce? It seems like both have talent. Zarko in some ways looks like a Nellie-type of player. What do you think? I was reading how Pierce was very strong with the ball in summer games. Did he impress anyone in camp?
Thanks,
Vaughn

Answer
Vaughn,
Zarko is not in camp and I have not heard if he has been invited elsewhere. I am not sure where he is in his recovery from back surgery. I would expect to find him in Europe somewhere this year. If he improves his jump shot and consistency, then I would expect him to find his way back to the NBA. Pierce had a good summer league and he did impress the coaching staff, but I don't believe they thought he was ready for an NBA point guard position. That's why they went out and signed Troy Hudson, who gives them an experienced backup who really needs to have a good season.
Take Care and Aloha from Hawaii,
Tim

Andris Biedrins and his Warriors teammates played paintball during their off day on Sunday. (photo: Monique Saenz)
Question
Thanks for the news from training camp. The Warriors have their fans all over the world, including myself in Poland. Good to hear the players are having fun and that Patrick O’Bryant and Al Harrington are visibly showing progress. What kind of shape is Andris Biedrins in after spending the summer with the Latvian National Team? Can you see any significant signs of further improvement of his offensive game? Can you see him as a guy who can average 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game this season? Is there anything done during training camp to help him stay out of foul trouble?
Piotr
Warsaw, Poland

Answer
Piotr,
Thanks, and as always, the world-wide connection to the Warriors is warriors.com and the good folks there are working hard to make it one of the best sites in sports. Andris, like most everyone else, appears to be in good shape and I think his offensive game is improving and with the work of shooting coach Sidney Moncrief, he can hopefully improve his free-throw shooting percentage. I don’t think there is any doubt that Andris has a chance to be a double-double guy for years to come. As far as the foul problems go, I think Andris was making strides to improve that toward the end of last season.
Thanks for the interest,
Tim

Any broadcaster would love to cover a guy like Pat Burke. (photo: Monique Saenz)
Question
Thanks Tim, I am so glad that Monta is going to be OK and it was great to hear my Question Answered by Nellie himself in your previous entry. I am a huge Warriors fan and am looking forward to this season. I do have another Question: Do you think Pat Burke and or Tierre Brown have a chance of making this team? I think Burke’s sense of humor would go over real well with this fun-loving group.
Patty

Answer
Patty,
I think the numbers and the players here would make it difficult to keep either Burke or Brown. Both guys would be great to have as insurance, but I don't know if they have a real shot. Selfishly, from the announcer’s standpoint, I would love to have Pat around as he seems like a good guy. And you’re right about his sense of humor – just check out these videos from last year when he was with the Suns. Video 1 | Video 2

Tim

Anxious Night

Thankfully, Monta Ellis' neck injury appears to be minor. (photo: Jordan Murph)
The Warriors spent an anxious evening after Monta Ellis was injured during practice. Ellis tried to split defenders in a high screen and roll scenario and his head banged the hip of rookie Brandan Wright. Ellis was down on the floor face first for at least 20 minutes while Athletic Trainer Tom Abdenour went through the protocol that was required and kept Monta still. The medical staff for all sports teams err on the side of caution in these situations and this was no exception.

Monta was released from the hospital early on Saturday morning with what was diagnosed as a sprained neck and walked out of Castle Hospital in Kailua under his own power. His CT san and MRI were fine and he is listed as day-to-day.

All in all, it was a rather sobering moment for what had been to the moment a very exciting and momentous camp.

Practice
Last night’s scrimmage before the injury was a little sloppier and not as precise as the earlier effort which is expected in camp because of fatigue. The team was ending a stretch of two-a-day practices and will meet with NBA security today and then work out tonight.

Turtle Bay
The stretch of days here is drawing to a close and I have to tell you that it is a relaxed atmosphere and way of life. There is a phrase called Hawaiian time and there is something good about people that are faced with deadlines to come here and realize that life can be accomplished at a slower pace.

Interview
After practice I chatted with Troy Hudson. Listen to the interview here .

Question
Hey Tim,
I would like to know what your take is on having a starting five of Davis, Jackson, Harrington, Wright and Biedrins. All of them can run, and with a big frontline, that should help out when it comes to getting rebounds. We have such a deep bench in which we can basically switch at every position when it comes to substitution.
Theody Virrey, Hayward

Answer
Theody,
I think that the starting five here would be a good one, depending on how Brandan progresses. He just turned 20 years of age and is learning the NBA and that will take time. Your point reveals the fact that interchangeable parts are a big strength of this team and will help it survive an 82-game schedule. The Warriors can put out a big lineup if they want or they can go small.
It will be great to watch this unfold.
Aloha from Oahu,
Tim

Rookie Brandan Wright is one of many intriguing young players on the Warriors roster. (photo: Jordan Murph)
Question
Hey Tim,
How do you think Monta will fit in to the lineup? Is he going to back up Baron at PG or start at SG over Marco?
Pat, Mill Valley

Answer
Pat,
Seeing that Monta's injury is a sprained neck and that he should be fine, I'll go ahead and Answer this one. Before the injury, I took your Question to Coach Don Nelson and here is what he had to say .
Aloha,
Tim

Question
Hey Tim,
What a great playoff run that was last year! We all know Marco Belinelli is great offensively, but will he be able to defend his position in the NBA? Watching the summer league games, he showed great anticipation in the passing lanes, but I wonder if he will be able to hold his own versus other guards, like his idol Kobe Bryant. Go Warriors!!!
Thanks,
Mark D.

Answer
Mark,
It remains to be seen how Marco’s defense will be. There is no Question that he is an exciting and tremendous shooter but you will be surprised how well he can pass the ball. He does play the passing lanes well but how he locks up a guy is still in doubt. Thanks for the e-mail and Aloha.

Interview Time

Patrick O'Bryant looks to be playing with a renewed sense of motivation thus far in training camp. (photo: Jordan Murph)
The Warriors have several new players on the team this season, and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of them. Earlier today, I had the opportunity to sit down with newcomer Austin Croshere, who seemed like a real good guy. To listen to the interview, click here.

Night Practice
Thursday night’s practice was a controlled series of scrimmages that started with 2-on-2 games, and worked its way up to 5-on-5. From my chair, Patrick O’Bryant is working with a new combative spirit and he looks to be improved to the point where you’ll be able to see results in the box score. Kelenna Azubuike also looks good and aggressive, while Al Harrington has shown up in great shape – he simply took over in one of the half-court sessions last night.

Projections
I know there has been some chatter about John Hollinger’s proclamation that Marco Bellinelli will be a bust and will be a foreign version of Adam Morrison. First of all, I don’t think we can close the book on Morrison just yet. Secondly, Marco has yet to play a real NBA game. I will say this, in a league where pure shooters are coveted, any player with Marco’s range could be around for a long time.

Hawaii
The weather today will bring trade wind showers with highs in the 80s. This is truly one of my favorite places to visit and I am extremely lucky and grateful to be here.

Another Chat
I conducted an interview with Al Harrington recently. To find out what Al did this past off-season, click here.

Idle Thought
Baseball is the only sport that does not have any sort of instant replay. I know they want to keep the human element in there, but there have recently been a number of close calls that would warrant at least a second look (i.e. the play at the end of the Padres-Rockies game on Monday night). Isn’t the idea to get it right?

Not everybody agrees with a certain national columnist that Marco Belinelli will be a sure bust. (photo: Jordan Murph)

Question
Hey Tim,
With the current roster, will the W's have a post presence in the offense?
G

Answer
G,
I think that the development of Biedrins, combined possibly with Patrick O'Bryant and Brandan Wright, will give the Warriors a stronger inside game this year. To be fair, they still need a better post game for sure and definitely need someone to rebound the basketball.
Thanks and aloha,
Tim

Question
Hello Tim,
I've been a big fan of the Golden State Warriors for some time and last year when we reached the playoffs, I was so exited that I just couldn't hide it. And then we eliminate Dallas -- it was a great season for us. This year with Sidney Moncrief I'm hoping that our shooting percentage will improve. And I want to ask you: Will the Warriors sign Baron Davis to a contract extension?
Thanks,
Dani

Answer
Dani,
Sidney is working with the team and charting their progress with their free-throw shooting and general shooting habits. He is detail oriented, dedicated to their improvement and brings with him the experience of a former NBA star. I am optimistic that the Warriors will improve this year in that category. As far as Baron goes, both sides have agreed to not talk contract during the season, plus Baron has another year left following this one. He will be fine and if he is healthy, the Warriors will be, too.
Aloha,
Tim

Question
Tim,
How does Baron look as I am worried about his wear and tear?
Fred, Alameda

Answer
Fred,
We asked Head Coach Don Nelson how his star guard is looking in the first few days of camp. Listen to his Answer here.
Hope that helps,
Tim

Camp is Here!!!

Click here to listen to my interview with Kelenna Azubuike. (warriors.com photo)
The team participated in Media Day festivities yesterday and flew to Hawaii where training camp will be held prior to playing the Los Angeles Lakers twice in Honolulu next week.

While in the Aloha State, I will be conducting several interviews with Warriors players and staff, so check back often with the Journal.

Yesterday, I chatted with Kelenna Azubuike. To listen to the interview, click here.

An Offer
I can be a conduit between you and the team and we can both benefit in the following manner. You can have me ask a Question of your favorite Warrior player or official and I will record their Answer and post here on the Journal.

Keep the Questions coming!!!

The Answers are Coming …
Obviously, there are some Questions surrounding this year’s Warriors team. How will they replace Jason Richardson at the two-guard and who will be the rebounder that Nellie needs? Those Answers could be found in camp and I will do my best to find them out for you.

It will be strange to walk into a Warriors practice gym and not see Adonal Foyle though, and I know that many of you wish him success in his new home in Orlando.

Warriors rookie Stephane Lasme could just prove to be the sleeper of the 2007 NBA Draft. (warriors.com photo)
Mailbag —

Question —
Hi Tim,
I've been a basketball fan forever. With Stephane Lasme being drafted by Golden State, I'm ready to become a die-hard fan of the Warriors, just like I was a fan of UMass. Yes, I'm from Gabon and here is my Question: Do you think Stephane has the potential to fit in with the team? As an insider, what are your thoughts regarding this player?
Thanks,
Igor Pambo
Still believin'

Answer —
Igor,
I see the potential for Mr. Lasme and Coach Don Nelson has already said that with his ability to rebound, he could see significant playing time. He is a little undersized for a power forward but he makes up for that with his athletic ability. In short, I think he has a chance to be the sleeper player this season for the Warriors. Training camp could tell us a lot of whether or not he has the potential to be an NBA player in the long term. For more on Lasme, check out this feature story from warriors.com.
Thanks for the interest. Best of luck!
Tim

Question —
Hi Tim,
Will the Warriors have an open practice this year?
Thanks,
Hugh

Answer —
Hugh,
They will have an open session but it is not clear when that will be. Keep checking warriors.com and my Journal for the date and time. See you there.
Tim

Question —
Tim,
I was thrilled to hear that Nelson is coming back and I was happy to hear that Barnes had re-signed. Now, the final piece from last year's team is back with the signing of Mickael Pietrus. What was Pietrus waiting for?
Thanks,
Ernie
Alameda

Answer —
Joe,
As you know by now, Mickael is signed and heading for Hawaii. As a restricted free-agent, he and his agent were pursuing other offers, but in the end accepted the Warriors qualifying offer. It will be curious to see how he responds.
