Who'd A Thunk?
By Peter Guber

Who’d a thunk as a 10-year-old boy growing up in Boston watching the Celtics from the rafters of the old Boston Garden, in an obstructed view seat (that’s where you see half the game half the time), that decades later I would be sitting center court in the owners’ seats to watch the Celtics on February 22 take on our Golden State Warriors?

Not me!

When I grew up in Boston, there were less than eight teams in the NBA, including Syracuse (Dolph Schayes) and Rochester (Oscar Robertson). I went to a summer camp in Maine where Red Auerbach, famed coach of the Celtics, would bring players for a clinic the last week of the summer. In that warm, Maine late afternoon I told myself the story that it would be great to be in this business – having no idea of how or when. I was too short to really make it as a player and even wondered if I had the killer instinct to ever take that final shot.

Decades later I did take that final shot with Joe Lacob and acquired the stewardship of the storied Warriors franchise. I always told myself a story that I lived all my life – a goal is only a dream with a time limit. My goal was to have the opportunity that I have today to provide the inspiration and perspiration for a successful winning franchise.

So whatever happens on February 22nd – Warriors vs. Celtics – it’s not the end. It’s not the end of the beginning. It’s the beginning of the beginning. And I’m thrilled to be a part of this story.

You, too, can be a part of this story. You can always connect with me or Joe here in the Owners’ Box and we’ll continue to answer your questions throughout the season.
