Getting Ready For The NBA Draft Combine

Let the poking and prodding begin. The NBA Draft Combine is this week and in the coming days, each of the 30 NBA teams will have general managers, scouts and other team executives in Chicago to get a first-hand look at about 60 of the top prospects in this year’s draft class.

With that in mind, our very own Tim Roye went to NBA Director of Scouting Ryan Blake for a complete breakdown of the 2012 NBA Draft. Listen to the interview below and find out who Blake thinks might fit for the Warriors in both the first and second rounds.

During the NBA Draft Combine, prospects will undergo extensive testing. Everything from height (with and without shoes) and weight to body fat and standing vertical leap will be measured, and that’s just scratching the surface. ESPNU will televise the event this Thursday and Friday, and live coverage will begin at 7 a.m. (PT) on both days. The combine will also be streamed on ESPN3.

Perhaps more important than official measurements, the draft combine offers teams the opportunity to interview potential draftees. While teams will certainly be inquiring about a prospect’s talents on the court, they’ll also ask questions outside the realm of basketball. The possibility of drafting a player stretches far beyond filling out a roster. Rather, it’s a multi-million dollar investment that can certainly impact the success of an NBA franchise. With that being said, no subject is off limits in these interviews. Teams want to know about a prospect’s maturity level, how they deal with stress, possible psychological issues, what kind of family life they have, etc. You’d be surprised as to what can be the determining factor in drafting one player over another, and it’s not always basketball related.

With the Warriors having four selections in the upcoming draft on June 28, they have as much at stake in the combine as any team in the league. General Manager Bob Myers will lead the Warriors' basketball operations contingent into Chicago this week, and not only will the group be interviewing potential targets for the No. 7 pick, but they’ll also sit down with potential selections for Nos. 30, 35 and 52.

Pundits across the nation are already posing their mock drafts, and that discussion will only heat up with the NBA Draft Combine. Stay tuned for more coverage of the combine and check out our pre-draft workout interview with Michigan State's Draymond Green below:
