For the first time since 1994, the U.S. National Team has emerged as the ultimate victor at the FIBA World Championship. Team USA defeated host country Turkey 81-64 on Sunday, winning the gold medal at the biggest basketball tournament in the world. The U.S. team completed an undefeated tournament in convincing fashion, taking control of the game early and never letting up.
Warriors guard Stephen Curry saw action in the first and fourth quarters, playing a total of seven minutes. Curry knocked down the only three-pointer he shot and finished the game with three points.
Kevin Durant led the way for Team USA once again, scoring 28 points and knocking down seven three-pointers. Lamar Odom notched a double-double, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Russell Westbrook scored 13.
After coming together for training camp in Las Vegas in July, the national team made stops and played exhibition games in New York and Madrid before heading to Turkey for the once-every-four-years tournament. The U.S. team went unbeaten throughout the exhibition games and the tournament, this despite playing without a single player from the 2008 Gold Medal-winning Olympic team. And when it was all said and done, the U.S. team captured FIBA World Championship Gold for the first time since 1994 when Don Nelson was the head coach of 'Dream Team 2.' Additionally, by winning the gold, the United States will receive an automatic bid for the 2012 Olympics in London.
As the only player with one-or-fewer years of NBA experience, Curry showed time and again that he belonged on this elite team, proving to be a key player off the bench and gaining valuable experience along the way. Curry played with and against the best players in the world, holding his own on one of basketball's biggest stages.
