Warriors To Play 2009 Pre-Season Game Outside

The Warriors will play an outdoor pre-season game against the Suns on October 10, 2009.
In recent years, the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns have been a bit unique compared to the rest of the league. With tendencies to play fast and with unconventional lineups, Bay Area and Phoenix fans have been treated to some of the most entertaining and crowd-pleasing basketball in all of the NBA.

In the fall of 2009, the two teams will give fans yet another treat as the Warriors face the Suns in an outdoors pre-season game. The second “NBA Outdoors” game, which was announced by Phoenix earlier today, will take place on Saturday, October 10, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. The 16,000-seat stadium is an NBA-style arena with no roof that annually plays host to one of the world’s major tennis tournaments, the BNP Paribas Open. The game will be televised nationally, exclusively on TNT.

Last year’s pre-season outdoor game between Phoenix and Denver took place at the same venue, and drew a sellout crowd. With the Suns hosting the Warriors in the 2009-10 outdoor game, the event promises to be as fun as ever as Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson and Andris Biedrins hit the hardwood under the night sky. The Warriors' remaining 2009 pre-season schedule will be released this summer at a later date.

Behind The Scenes Of Warriors HQ With Andris Biedrins

Although the Warriors have played just three games in the last 14 days, the team has stayed plenty busy over the last two weeks. As is generally the case during the season, the team spends most of its non-game days at the Warriors Practice Facility in Downtown Oakland. Center Andris Biedrins recently gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at what exactly goes down at the facility on Warriors Weekly, and the video of that can be seen below:

Behind The Scenes With Andris Biedrins

Currently, the team is preparing for Friday's home game vs. the Charlotte Bobcats. Following Wednesday's practice, Head Coach Don Nelson announced that Jamal Crawford will have the game off in order for some of the younger players to see some extended playing time. Find out what else Nellie had to say and hear from rookie Anthony Randolph by watching the video below:

    Warriors Practice Interviews - 2/25/09

Riding High Into The All-Star Break

The Warriors go into the All-Star Break riding their first three-game winning streak of the season.
The All-Star Break has arrived, and if you asked any of the Warriors, they are not exactly happy about it. You can't really blame them either. After struggling over the first three months of the season, the team looks to have found its groove, only to be interrupted by a five-day layoff.

The Warriors beat the visiting Trail Blazers on Thursday night and have now won three-consecutive games for the first time this season. Furthermore, they've won four-straight at home, and three of those victories were against Western Conference teams with above-.500 records. Not only is the team beginning to string together some victories, but the way they are doing it has truly been impressive. Instead of playing well for a quarter or two and escaping with a victory, the Warriors have controlled entire ballgames lately and mostly eliminated any chance of an opponent's comeback.

Recent wins over the Suns, Jazz and Knicks displayed the run-and-gun Warriors that fans have come to recognize over the past few years. Golden State averaged 28.3 fast break points over those wins and shot at least 51.9 percent in each of those contests.

With a healthy roster, Monta Ellis and the Warriors have the look of a successful second-half team.
Thursday's victory over the Blazers, however, was of a different breed. The Warriors didn't shoot the ball well (40.8 percent) and they registered just 15 fast-break points, but they still managed to grind out the win, and they did so by being successful in areas that has drawn criticism in recent years - free-throw shooting and defense. The Warriors converted on 39 of their 43 free-throw attempts (90.7 percent) and forced Portland into a season-high 23 turnovers. That win was anything but pretty, and the Warriors of November or December don't win that game. But it's February now, the team is approaching full health - Andris Biedrins and Marco Belinelli are expected to be back in uniform on Wednesday when the Warriors host the Lakers - and all the pieces of the 2008-09 Warriors puzzle are beginning to fit together nicely. As a result, Golden State is now able to win ugly, and the ability to do that is certainly a sign of a good team.

Had the team been healthy all year, who knows, maybe a Warrior or two would be representing the team this weekend in Phoenix at the NBA All-Star Game. Of course, that is not the case, but the Warriors will still be celebrating All-Star Weekend with a special Road Viewer Party on Sunday at the Englander in San Leandro. Fans of all ages are invited to attend this admission-free event, which will include the chance to meet the Warrior Girls, win prizes and watch the NBA All-Star Game.

C.J. Watson has made the most of his minutes in recent weeks.
While he is not an NBA All-Star, at least not yet anyway, C.J. Watson was recently awarded with another prestigious honor, as he was named to the University of Tennessee's All-Century Basketball team. Warriors radio producer R.C. Davis talked to C.J. about the honor, and that interview aired on the most recent edition of Warriors Radio Roundtable. C.J.'s appearance on Roundtable also included a feature on the C.J. Watson Essay Contest, presented by Southwest Airlines, in which the winners, who were fifth-graders from C.J.'s hometown of Las Vegas, were flown to the Bay Area and treated to a Warriors home game. For a photo gallery of their visit with their hometown hero, click here.

Speaking of Warriors Radio Roundtable, Don Nelson made his first of several live appearances on the show on Wednesday and answered questions directly from the fans. To find out when he will next be on the show and how the coach can answer your question, click here.

And for more features and coverage on the Warriors, be sure to catch the next edition of Warriors Weekly on Monday at 6 p.m. If you miss the show, you can catch all segments on Tuesday right here on warriors.com.

One last thing before we take off for the weekend: You need to check out the new Warrior Girls page. With bios and photo galleries for each member of one of the top dance teams in the NBA, this year's Warrior Girls page is the best yet. Enjoy … and we'll be back after the All-Star Break.

Practice Interviews, Turiaf's House, Team Updates And More

After turning in one of their best performances of the year on Wednesday in a 124-112 win over the visiting Phoenix Suns, the Warriors were back at practice on Thursday, busy preparing for...the Phoenix Suns. The two teams will meet again tonight, this time in Phoenix. The game will mark the Warriors only road contest until February 23rd, and they will be looking to capitalize on Wednesday's success over Shaquille O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash and former Warriors Jason Richardson and Matt Barnes.

To see what Head Coach Don Nelson, Ronny Turiaf and Stephen Jackson had to say at yesterday's practice, watch the clip below:

The first-year Warrior also recently gave fans a tour of his new home as part of a special segment of Warriors Weekly. Warriors Super Bowl Predictions

Jamal Crawford will root for Larry Foote and the Steelers on Super Bowl Sunday.
Roughly 100 million people will watch Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday, and one can assume that the likes of Stephen Jackson, Monta Ellis and Jamal Crawford will be glued to the television every bit as much as the average joe battling through his food coma. Only two NBA games are slated for Super Sunday, both of which figure to be completed by the time the NFL game kicks off at 3:28 p.m., so nearly all of the NBA eyes will be on the Steelers taking on the Cardinals.

One player who might be paying a little closer attention than most is Jamal Crawford. The Warriors guard attended the University of Michigan along with Steelers linebacker Larry Foote. The two remain friends, so it's no coincidence that Crawford is predicting a 24-10 Steelers win.

Take a look below and see how some of the other Warriors think the game will turn out …

    Predicting A Steelers Win
    Predicting a Cardinals Win

  • Jamal Crawford
  • Corey Maggette
  • C.J. Watson
  • Rob Kurz
  • Jermareo Davidson

  • Stephen Jackson
  • Kelenna Azubuike
  • Ronny Turiaf
  • Anthony Randolph
  • So there you have it. If the game turns out like this informal poll, expect a close game on Sunday with the Steelers eventually hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

And in case you missed it, below is a video from practice on Tuesday with interviews with Andris Biedrins and Corey Maggette.

Also, to get ready for the unveiling of his brand new bobblehead, Monta Ellis recently filmed a commercial to help promote it. However, Monta had not seen his bobblehead until seconds before he was about to shoot the spot. As you can probably expect, his reaction to meeting his recreation was pretty entertaining. Ellis To Make Much-Anticipated Return Tomorrow Versus Cleveland

Monta Ellis will make his 2008-09 season debut tomorrow night versus the Cavaliers at ORACLE Arena.
Warriors.com has just learned from our contacts with the Warriors PR staff that Monta Ellis' long road back from his offseason ankle injury will soon be complete, as the fourth-year guard will make his 2008-09 season debut tomorrow night when the Warriors host the Cavaliers at ORACLE Arena.

The decision to have Ellis return to the court was made after Thursday's practice. Following practice, Ellis expressed his excitement about returning to the floor.

“I’m really happy, excited and looking forward to tomorrow,” said Ellis. “We decided as a group today after practice that Friday’s game would be a good situation for me. I have worked extremely hard during my rehabilitation, with the help of the Warriors’ staff, and feel that I’m ready to go. It’s just nice to get back to the game that I love and to play for the fans who have been so good to me. I’m really pumped. It’s a great day.”

Tuesday marked a big step in Monta Ellis' return from ankle surgery, as he participated in his first full practice with teammates. Three Days Later And Wow

Anthony Morrow's smooth shooting touch netted him 37 points on Saturday in L.A. (Noah Graham/NBAE/Getty)
So we've had a few days to digest Anthony Morrow's big game, but we're still standing by our initial reaction … WOW!!! Thirty-seven points, 15-for-20 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range. Those numbers just don't happen for an NBA rookie, let alone one who went undrafted this past June.

Morrow's hot shooting touch helped lead the Warriors to a 121-103 road win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, and it also continued an all-but-common path into the NBA spotlight. The 23-year-old sharpshooter, who had only three games of NBA experience before Saturday's action, was not thought to be much of an impact player for the Warriors during the 2008-09 season. After all, he was one of the final players added to the Warriors' Opening Night roster on Oct. 28.

But to say Morrow's performance came out of nowhere wouldn't be entirely accurate because his ability to shoot the basketball was no secret. After taking part in a pre-draft workout with the Warriors and subsequently going unselected, Golden State invited the Georgia Tech product to participate in the team's Summer League entry. Despite already having a contract in place to play professionally in the Ukraine, Morrow quickly made his presence felt on the Warriors' summer squad, averaging 18.1 points on 54.9 shooting in seven games in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. In fact, Morrow was named the MVP for the Rocky Mountain Revue, putting a stamp on a successful summer that saw him knock down 17 of his 23 three-point attempts (73.9 percent) and earn him a training camp invite.

Morrow parlayed that invite into a roster spot and on Saturday was the talk of the entire NBA. A few notes from that performance:

    • His 37 points are an all-time NBA record for points scored by an undrafted rookie.
    • The point total was higher than any other player making his first NBA start since the 1971-72 season (as far back as the Elias Sports Bureau goes).
    • That 37 points marks the season-high for any NBA rookie this season.
    • Morrow's 37 points mark a season-high for the Warriors.
And by the way, lost in the shuffle of this breakout performance was 11 rebounds in his first-career double-double of his first-career NBA start.

Morrow discussed his career-game on KNBR on Monday. Listen to the interview below, and hear what Head Coach Don Nelson and Stephen Jackson had to say about the rookie after Monday's practice by clicking here.

    ANTHONY MORROW ON KNBR

Morrow's incredible game has also been written about by several local writers. Read a few of the articles below for more:

How Morrow follows up his Saturday effort will be found out on tonight when the Warriors host the Trail Blazers . A limited number of tickets are still available for this Family and Friends contest, which will allow fans to save up to $98 on a package including four game tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and four bags of chips.

Biedrins Starring On And Off The Court

Andris Biedrins has averaged 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds over the first four regular-season games. (Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE/Getty)
We're a week into the 2008-09 regular season, and while the Warriors' won-loss record isn't as top heavy as would be ideal, there is still plenty to be excited about thus far in the young season.

Let's start with the play of Andris Biedrins. The 22-year-old center from Latvia is playing well beyond his years, averaging 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. Granted, we're only four games into the season and one game can drastically alter those numbers. But still, Andris is getting it done, and this is nothing new, either. Dating back to last season, Biedrins has logged double-doubles in 11-straight games. That's the longest active streak in the NBA. Longer than Dwight Howard, longer than Chris Paul, LeBron James, you name it. Nobody has a longer streak going right now than Biedrins.

Speaking of Biedrins, he and fellow Warriors captain Stephen Jackson have been the stars of Jack and Dre TV. Together, the pair has appeared in several videos that have aired on the first few editions of Warriors Weekly. Check out their latest segment by clicking here.

Throughout the season, we plan on bringing you more videos than ever before, so stay tuned. From practice interviews with Coach Nellie to game highlights to entertaining features, warriors.com will be home to the most diverse Warriors video collection on the web.

And in case you've fallen behind on our video content, check out some of these:

That's it for now. But if you're looking for more Warriors content, be sure to read Tim Roye's Journal. In his latest entry, the Warriors radio broadcaster shared his thoughts on the team so far and answered fan e-mail.

Have a question about the Warriors? E-mail Tim Roye and he can answer it in the next edition of the Journal.
