STEPHEN CURRY
Warriors Guard

My name is Stephen Curry and I am a rookie for the Golden State Warriors. After a great college experience at Davidson, I got drafted by the Warriors and moved to Oakland — which is a long way from my hometown of Charlotte, NC. Playing in the NBA is a dream come true and now I get to test my skills every night against the best basketball players in the world. I'll be keeping a diary with GQ for the entire season, so follow along with me on this amazing journey.

Stephen Curry Moves To Oakland

The last game I played in college was in the NIT against St. Mary's. That was the first time I had come to the Oakland area. So, the last game I played in college and the first game of my NBA career were out here in the Bay Area. It's pretty cool. When I moved out, my Mom and Dad came to help me get settled into my apartment—a place I ultimately got hooked up with in Coach Nelson's building. We had to figure out how to get all my shoes over here. That was a little stressful. Playing basketball all my life, I've collected a lot of different basketball shoes. It's pretty much all I wear. My Mom and Dad stayed for about a week and then let me go. I'm not completely alone though. I have a friend who's my business manager, so he stays here with me.

In the middle of September, when I came out to Oakland—that was two weeks before training camp began—there were seven or eight guys who would go to the gym everyday to workout and play a little pick-up. It was a lot like my summer in Charlotte: you wake up, work out, and then try to find something to do to pass the time. The Bay Area's nice, but everything's spread out and you really have to know where to go.

Stephen Curry's Summer In Charlotte

From two days before the Draft until about June 30, I didn't touch a basketball, because of the traveling and the media and the meetings with front offices. Right after the Draft, when I came out to Oakland, there was a press conference and a dinner with the owner, GM, and Coach Nelson.

We did some sightseeing and some house searching the next day, but to be honest, I had no idea what I was doing. I tried to find a spot close to our gym, because I figured that's where I'd spend most of my time. But it was kind of weird searching for a place where I was going to live by myself for the first time. I just wanted three bedrooms, and tried to figure out the best spot that felt right. After all that, though, I couldn't make a decision before I moved back home to Charlotte to work out for the summer.

Stephen Curry and the NBA Draft

The longest three hours of Stephen Curry's life finally ended when Commissioner Stern announced his name at the NBA Draft. (photo: Nathaniel S. Butler /NBAE/Getty)
As soon as the school year ended, I signed with my agency, Octagon, and moved to D.C. to work out with a personal trainer and some strength coaches that Octagon hooked me up with. So from the end of May until the middle of June, I was working out everyday with the other four guys that Octagon had signed for the draft class. We would visit with teams, workout for a day or two, and then come back to D.C. Then we'd work out some more before making another trip. That was pretty much the pattern up until the Draft.

The Draft was on a Thursday in New York, so I got there Tuesday night—a few days early to do the media circuit. We had photo shoots. We had a charity event. We got to tour New York for a little bit. I had only been to New York to play ball. Maybe three or four times for games. When Thursday came around there was more media stuff. At the hotel there were a bunch of NBA sponsors that we had to meet. We were busy all Draft Day. Then that night, we all put on our suits—about a month before the Draft, a guy in Greensboro helped me design my suit, make it, and tailor it—and went over to Madison Square Garden. We took a bunch of pictures with the commissioner. We took some pictures with some more NBA sponsors and some fans, too. Then you're sitting in the green room before the actual Draft starts. Waiting. That was probably the longest three hours of my life, just waiting.

There were 16 of us that got invited to the Draft. A small group, and we all pretty much spent the whole two days together while we were in New York. And so we're all sitting there in the green room. I was anxious. You kind of don't know what to expect in that moment. After the first pick's done, you think every pick after that is gonna be you--and then there's a minor letdown right after Commissioner Stern calls somebody else's name. And then, as soon as the clock starts for the next team, you get nervous again. It's a rollercoaster of emotions.

Stephen Curry's First Road Trip

Curry wasted no time before working out upon the team's arrival in Phoenix last week. (photo: Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
We had practice the morning after that first game, and then we went straight to the airport to catch a chartered plane down to Phoenix. Once we got to Phoenix, we checked into the hotel. All of us are in the same place, each with our own rooms, and we were allowed to do whatever we wanted. Which is totally different than college, where they manage your schedule for you. In the NBA, you're on your own.

I knew Jason Richardson from the Suns, and our personal trainer that we both worked out with in the summertime was also in Phoenix, so I hung out with them that night. We went to Phoenix's workout facility, and I got some shots up there. Then I went out to eat with them before heading back to the hotel for some sleep. That's the first time on a road trip that I worked out as soon as we got into town. But I had a lot of energy; I had to get it out.

The morning of game-day, we had our shootaround at 11. It lasted for about an hour, and then we had the rest of the day to ourselves. The first bus to the game leaves two-and-a-half hours prior to tip, and then there's a second bus that leave two hours before the game. But for me and some of the others young guys, we take a separate car service with two of our assistant coaches so we can get an extra workout in while the court's empty, before everybody else gets there. It's sort of a mandatory and optional thing. They say you don't have to come, but that's not a good sign to the coach. Yeah, I take that back. It's mandatory.

Stephen Curry's NBA Debut

Curry played his first regular season NBA game against the Rockets on October 28, 2009. (photo: Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty)
Wednesday morning I woke up at about 9:30, and got a good breakfast in—an egg-and-cheese bagel and a waffle. We had a shoot-around at 11, and afterwards, I got a nice smoothie, went home, and took a three-hour nap. My mom was in town for opening night, and she was staying in one of my extra bedrooms. So she cooked my favorite spaghetti for my pre-game meal when I woke up. Pretty good comfort food. My dad [Dell Curry] was doing color commentary for the Charlotte Bobcats' opening night, so he couldn't make it out.

On my way to the stadium, I panicked a little because I didn't realize there'd be so much traffic. I had a set time that I was supposed to be at the arena to start warming up. Normally it takes about 10 minutes to get to the stadium, but with the traffic I was a little stressed. I ended up getting there on time, and there was a film crew from NBA.com that wanted to document my first opening night. They wanted video footage of me pulling into the parking lot through to when the game started, but they didn't know when I'd be arriving. So, when I got to the arena, I walked all the way to the locker room, and when they came in, they were like, "Agh, we missed your entrance! Can you go back to the car and do it again?" So I went out and pulled the car back in, hopped out, and walked back to the arena again so they could film it. I was down on the court 30 minutes later for my warm-up. I thought I'd be nervous the whole time, but it felt pretty natural.
