The Golden State Warriors, along with the Good Tidings Foundation, unveiled a newly-renovated basketball court on Saturday, October 5. The court is located at F.M. Smith Recreation Center on the corner of Park Blvd. and Newton Avenue in Oakland. Former Warriors greats Chris Mullin and Nate Thurmond joined Warriors executive director, basketball operations Otis Smith, Good Tidings Foundation founder Larry Harper and officials from the City of Oakland at the unveiling.

“The Golden State Warriors organization is thrilled to facilitate the renovation of this basketball court, knowing the pride and enjoyment that it will bring to the surrounding community,” said Robert Rowell, chief operating officer of the Warriors.

The $25,000 renovation project on the F.M. Smith Recreation Center basketball court, which was funded by the Warriors and the Good Tidings Foundation, included a resurfaced playing area complete with color and striping, as well as the replacement of rims, backboards and poles.

“Dollar for dollar, building an inner-city basketball court annually with the Golden State Warriors is the best thing the Good Tidings Foundation can do as a charity,” said Harper.

The event included a performance from Warriors mascot Thunder, an inaugural neighborhood youth basketball game, a free barbeque lunch for all those in attendance, and interactive games for kids.

“This refurbishment ensures that our youth will have a playground reflective of a caring and concerned community and involved corporate citizens. The Golden State Warriors and the Good Tidings Foundation are recognized and appreciated for taking pride in Oakland and the Greater Bay Area,” remarked Dr. Harry Edwards, Director, City of Oakland, Office of Parks and Recreation.

As part of the Golden State’s “Makin’ Hoops” program, the Good Tidings Foundation and the Warriors have partnered to renovate six basketball courts, including Oakland’s Brookdale Recreation Center in 1999. Overall, the Warriors have renovated 16 total courts throughout the Bay Area as part of the “Makin’ Hoops” program.
