Owner Christopher Cohan is dedicated to continuing the Golden State Warriors' longstanding tradition of positive community involvement through the development of the Warriors Foundation and by creating programs and supporting community-based efforts throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Together with the NBA, the Warriors also promote league-wide initiatives supporting child literacy, sportsmanship, child abuse prevention, Black History Month, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The following is an overview of the Warriors Foundation and the Warriors' programs and initiatives in the community in support of our mission.

Our Mission
The Golden State Warriors are committed to enhancing the lives of Bay Area youth and their families. Our goal is to strengthen our community by providing programs and activities that promote self-esteem, respect, integrity, teamwork and excellence.

Warriors Foundation
The Golden State Warriors Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization founded by Christopher and Angela Cohan during the 1997-1998 season, is dedicated to providing opportunities and financial assistance to nonprofit organizations in the greater San Francisco Bay Area that benefit the lives of local youth and families in the areas of education, health, and social and cultural enrichment.

During the 2002-03 season, the Foundation will continue to host in-arena and on-line auctions and other charitable endeavors in support of its grants program, After School Program at Lafayette Elementary School in partnership with Sports4Kids, and other community activities. Since the 2000-01 season, the Warriors Foundation has distributed over $225,000 in grants to 25 Bay Area nonprofit organizations.

Angela & Christopher Cohan Community Service Award
The Warriors Foundation is proud to congratulate Antawn Jamison, the 2002-03 recipient of the Angela & Christopher Cohan Community Service Award. This honor is awarded annually to the Warriors player who has best exemplified the spirit of community service through his outstanding commitment of time, service and financial support to children and families in the Bay Area community. Past recipients of the award include Adonal Foyle (2001-02 season) and Larry Hughes (2000-01 season).

Helping Out Other People
Helping Out Other People -- H.O.O.P.
Through H.O.O.P., owner Christopher Cohan encourages Warriors employees to reach out to become active members of the community. From mentoring or coaching local students to delivering food and providing holiday cheer to families at homeless shelters, Warriors players and staff cultivate this spirit of community involvement by volunteering their personal and professional service during the workday and throughout the year. Since 1998, Warriors players, coaches and employees have donated over 4,500 hours of service. Each year the Warriors honor a staff volunteer with the “H.O.O.P.er of the Year” Award in recognition of his or her exemplary community service.

Warriors Basketball Camp
Since its inception in 2000, Warriors Basketball Camp has grown to meet the needs of aspiring young players all over the Bay Area. The 2001-02 season featured winter and spring break sessions, guard and shooting camps, parent/child camp and eight weeklong summer sessions which included an all girls week and a high potential boys camp. Although the majority of camp sessions are conducted at the Warriors Practice Facility in Oakland, the summer of 2002 included sessions at two outside locations-West Valley College in Saratoga and the Silliman Activity Center in Newark. Warriors Basketball Camp, sponsored by Mechanics Bank, continues to be an exciting experience for local youth, ages 8-16, of every skill level and ability year-round. The Camp also features guest appearances from current and former Warriors players and coaches, and focuses on fundamental skill development and the importance of teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship.

"Tall Tales" Reading Program
The "Tall Tales" Reading Program, which enters its ninth season, is the Warriors’ highly acclaimed child literacy program conducted in partnership with Bay Area elementary/middle schools and public library systems. The program is sponsored by the Contra Costa Times and FOX Sports Net. In conjunction with the NBA’s league-wide Read to Achieve initiative, Warriors players and other members of the Warriors All-Star Reading Team will bring the joy of reading year-round to Bay Area children through monthly "Tall Tales" readings, the "Tall Tales" Reading Challenge, Reading Camp, Reading Centers and other exciting literacy activities. "Tall Tales" expands each year and now reaches thousands of children at libraries, schools and youth centers throughout the Bay Area.

    Golden Moments

    Warriors fans, young and old alike, experience surprise visits by Warriors players through this "random acts of kindness" program. Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy and rookie Jiri Welsch recently surprised Bay Area commuters in downtown Oakland by donating BART tickets and encouraging residents to take public transportation.

    Making the Grade

    This season marks the third year of the "Making the Grade" program, an incentive-based middle school level program, sponsored by The Oakland Tribune/ANG Newspapers and Canon Business Solutions, which serves as a tool in drop-out prevention and encourages students to improve in-school participation through the three A’s - Attendance, Academics and Attitude. Over 15,000 students from middle schools in the Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and West Contra Costa Unified School Districts are expected to participate. Students will have the opportunity to host player visits, earn “All-Star” class honors and incentive prizes each month and attend Warriors home games.

    Congratulations to Linda He of Centerville Junior High in Fremont, who won our "Making the Grade" essay contest. Linda, who wrote an essay about the importance of one of the three A's - Attendance, won Canon Business Solutions office product for her school, a basketball autographed by the 2002-03 Golden State Warriors team, a Warriors gift bag valued at $200 and four tickets to the Warriors home game on Monday, April 14.     Makin' Hoops
    Makin' Hoops
    Through the "Makin’ Hoops" program, the Warriors continue to help improve and revitalize Bay Area communities through basketball court refurbishment. "Makin’ Hoops" renovation projects primarily consist of court resurfacing, replacement of rims, backboards, poles and other general renovations at local parks and recreation centers. Last season, in partnership with the Good Tidings Foundation, the Warriors dedicated a newly constructed court in the City of Newark at Ash Street Park. A newly refurbished court in Oakland will be unveiled early in the 2002-03 season. Since the program’s inception seven years ago, 16 courts have been renovated and remain a source of neighborhood pride for their adjacent communities.

    Junior Warriors Basketball League

    The Junior Warriors Basketball League offers a unique basketball experience for Bay Area youth, ages 6-17. Through partnerships with local youth agencies, the Warriors are able to enhance existing leagues by providing special benefits for all participants, including reversible jerseys and shorts, certificates of participation and 2-for1 ticket vouchers for Warriors home games. Other special features of the league include a Coaches Clinic, featuring the Warriors coaching staff, and a Player Clinic, featuring current/former Warriors players, both of which are hosted at the Warriors Practice Facility. The season is capped off with a championship game at The Arena in Oakland prior to a Warriors game. The Junior Warriors Basketball League, sponsored by Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Gatorade and the Oakland International Airport, is expected to expand from nearly 10,000 participants last season to over 14,000 this year.

    Warriors Prostate Cancer Awareness Program
    Last season the Warriors partnered with the Ethnic Health Institute of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center to generate public awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection, particularly in the African American community. Warriors legend and NBA Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond will continue to serve as spokesperson for the campaign. In addition to hosting an annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Night at the arena, the Warriors also support EHI’s extensive health education outreach efforts in the community, which include prostate cancer forums and free prostate screenings.

    Adonal
    The Adonal Foyle Investment Challenge
    This season the Warriors are pleased to announce the launch of the Adonal Foyle Investment Challenge presented by Merrill Lynch. This innovative new financial literacy program is designed to teach high school students about the stock market and expose them to future opportunities in the financial industry. By participating in The Stock Market Game™, an interactive ten-week curriculum developed by the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education, students will learn how to track today’s stock market trends and manage their own money – plus have the chance to earn exciting incentive prizes and honors based on attendance, teamwork and creativity. At the conclusion of the program, five students will also be awarded paid summer internships with Merrill Lynch in San Francisco.

    Road Warriors
    The Golden State Warriors Wheelchair Basketball team was formed in 1976 and was originally named the Golden State 76ers. In 1992, the team became the Road Warriors, the official wheelchair basketball team of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. The Road Warriors competed in the 55th Annual NWBA Championship Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona where they tried to reclaim their National Title. The team concluded their 2002-03 season by being defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round. They ended their season with a record of 8-12.

    Head Coach Paul Jackson has led the team into the NWBA’s top 10 for 22 straight years. The roster includes guards Chuck Gill, Trooper Johnson, Dave MacArthur, Craig Shewmake and Lee Williamson, forwards Donnie Keller and Pete Sanchez and centers Curtis Lease and Dave Sutherland. In addition to educating thousands of students on a local level about disability awareness, many of the players also compete on an international level in basketball and other wheelchair sports, including swimming, football, volleyball and tennis.

    Thanksgiving Caravan
    As a part of the H.O.O.P. (Helping Out Other People) program, Warriors players, coaches and staff share their Thanksgiving spirit each holiday with the underserved communities of the Bay Area. This season the Warriors Thanksgiving Caravan will continue to provide plenty of holiday cheer throughout our community and delicious turkey dinners with all the trimmings.

    Antawn Jamison
    Holiday Caravan
    Every year the Warriors spread holiday cheer and good will to hundreds of youth and families throughout the Bay Area. Last season, Warriors players visited several youth organizations and hospitals, bearing toys, gifts and holiday spirit, with the support of The Good Tidings Foundation. Warriors players, coaches and staff also joined The Jungle Fun and Adventure and Laidlaw to host a Warriors Community Holiday Party for hundreds of children and their families from local shelters. This Christmas, the Warriors Holiday Caravan will expand its outreach to bring the joy of the holidays to those in need.

    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
    The Warriors join the league in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King with a special celebration for youth and their families every January. Last season, local youth were featured in pre-game and half-time performances and throughout the game as they served as special assistants to the team’s announcer, broadcasters and reporters as well as Thunder, the Warrior Girls and the Hoop Troop. With the support of ticket donations by season ticket holders, the Warriors will celebrate the spirit of Dr. King this season with special festivities when the Warriors host Sacramento at The Arena in Oakland on Monday, January 20.

    Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team
    This academic year, the Warriors, Oakland Athletics, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and San Jose Sharks will team up to provide $18,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, inspirational leadership on the athletic field and commitment to their communities. Since its inception in 1996, the BAASST program has awarded a total of $111,000 to 42 deserving students.

    Special Olympics
    Throughout the season, Special Olympians will continue to have the opportunity to build job skills by working with the Community Relations staff in the front office and as game-night assistants at Warriors home games. The program culminates at an end-of-season Special Olympics Celebration at the arena. In addition, a special edition of Warriors Basketball Camp for Special Olympic coaches and athletes will be held at the Warriors practice facility.
