Warriors Team Up With Clorox To Clean Up The Classroom
Stephen Curry and Warriors coaches joined Clorox executives in distributing backpacks to students at Oakland's Garfield Elementary

Oakland’s Garfield Elementary school was all smiles as Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors visited their school on Monday, September 17 for the Clean Up the Classroom with The Clorox Company community event.
As the tip-off event to the Warriors Back to School Week, the fourth-year Warriors guard joined Assistant Coaches Darren Erman and Kris Weems and spent the morning with Garfield’s 580 elementary school students, speaking about the importance of education and keeping a clean and tidy classroom. Curry, the coaches and The Clorox Company spokeswoman Rita Gorenberg spoke to the 3rd and 4th graders during an assembly followed by classroom visits to each 5th grade class.

“We’re here to promote healthy lifestyles and classroom education; there’s a lot of students at this school so we want to make sure everybody’s taking care of themselves and provide a healthy environment to learn,” Curry said.

Curry looked back to his experiences in school as a young student and the impact school visitors similar to him had on his young life.

“I definitely looked up to athletes and influential people in the community who came out to speak and share some of the things that help the people behind them along the way.”

As part of the Clorox Classroom national campaign to keep kids healthier at school and at home, Garfield Elementary teachers each received two 75-count canisters of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, in an effort to help them continue to provide a clean, germ-free environment for students to succeed in.

During the assembly, The Clorox Company also inducted each child into the Clean Club with a pledge. Each student, along with Curry and coaches Weems and Erman raised their hand and repeated the pledge aloud which included:

  • “I will always wash my hands”
  • “I will always cough into my elbow”
  • “I will always use a tissue”

The partnership with the Warriors provides The Clorox Company with a platform at the local level to address their mission to help create a healthy environment and a successful school year for students.

“Clorox is really excited to partner with the Warriors because they share our company’s enthusiasm to support healthier kids in and out of the classroom,” said Belen Arellano, Associate Marketing Manager at the Clorox Company. “What’s fantastic is our partnership with the Warriors allows us to execute our national Canisters for Classrooms and Power A Bright Future school grant program here at a local level to get involved in the community to make a difference in our own backyard.”

Warriors Assistant Coach for Player Development Kris Weems emphasized the importance of the Warriors and The Clorox Company working together to make the Oakland community a better place.

“It’s so important to keep our schools safe and clean. The kids are the future, and we want to make sure they have a clean and safe environment, so it’s great that the Warriors are partnered with The Clorox Company to do that.”

In addition to highlighting the importance of maintaining a sanitary learning space for students, the Warriors also wanted to help students be prepared and organized for the new school year by providing a new backpack to each student.

“I was so excited! I was going out of my mind, I was going to jump on my desk,” exclaimed 5th grader Kalaysia upon receiving her new blue Warriors backpack.

Warriors Assistant Coach Darren Erman shared the students’ excitement for their new backpacks.

“I might take a backpack for myself, they’re pretty cool. The kids seem to be really into them and excited that we’re here.”

Monday’s school visit tipped off the Warriors’ Back to School in the Bay: 5 Schools in 5 Days, as the Warriors will visit five schools and rec centers in five days to help raise awareness about the importance of education. Garfield Elementary school Principal Nima Tahai was happy that Curry could be a strong positive role model for his students.

“I want students to know that they should approach school like a basketball player approaches playing the game,” Tahai said. “It takes lots of practice, hard work and dedication, and that ultimately they can become a superstar not just on the basketball court but in the classroom, because that’s where it really matters.”
