Fortson |
Golden State Warriors 6-8 power forward Danny Fortson has been a monster on the boards since his rookie season in 1997-98. He has been at the top of the NBA's rebounding charts all season, averaging 13 rebounds per game throughout the NBA's first two months.
In 2000-01, Fortson's season was cut short after six games due to a stress fracture in his right foot. At the time of his injury, he was leading the league with 16.3 rebounds per game, while averaging 16.7 points. Now fully healthy and playing regular minutes at the power forward position for the first time in his career, Fortson is showing people he has the attributes of an NBA All-Star.
The Pennsylvania native has recorded 11-plus rebounds in 13 of his 21 games this season, with 14-plus boards in nine games, and is one of eight players in the NBA averaging a point/rebound double-double this season.
Since the beginning of Fortson's rookie year in 1997-98, no player has averaged more rebounds per 48 minutes than the former Cincinnati Bearcat. In 212 career games (which includes 21 this season), Fortson is averaging 17.2 rebounds per 48 minutes.
Fortson's rebounding prowess is growing in his first full season with Golden State, as he grabbed 22 rebounds at Memphis on November 12. His 22-rebound effort marked his second 20-plus rebound performance this season (also 21 rebounds vs. Portland on 11/4) and the sixth 20-plus rebound game of his career. Against the Grizzlies, Fortson also tallied 20 points to go along with 22 boards, marking his third career 20/20 effort and his second as a Warrior (also 11/12/00 vs. Orlando, when he tallied 21 points and 21 rebounds).

HOW ARE THE 2 ROOKIES HELPING THE TEAM OUT?
Danny Fortson at 4:19pm ET
They're doing a great job. Troy's a tough guy. Likes to mix it up. Jason Richardson's a phenomenal athlete. Gilbert Arenas is learning the game. He'll be great. They're all a big help. We need those guys.

my nizzle, What keeps you motivated to perform night in and night out.
Danny Fortson at 4:20pm ET
Just knowing that people doubt me. People don't think I'm capable of what I'm doing. That keeps me motivated. I think I'll be a great player one day.

D-Fort, since we all know that Jackson will be traded on Jan. 19, who would you like for the warriors to bring in....Van Exel or maybe Best?
Danny Fortson at 4:22pm ET
Extra point guard wouldn't be bad. But I like Dean Oliver. He's gonna be a great point guard one day. The team's kinda deep, especially the bigs. Van Exel would give us a proven All-Star. Nick's been around for a while.

What are your favorite hobbies? Have you ever played as yourself in a Video Game?
Danny Fortson at 4:23pm ET
I haven't played video games. My hobby is sitting at home and watching TV. I like to relax. I need to save my energy to go out on the court and bang.

who is the best power forward in the NBA?
Danny Fortson at 4:24pm ET
I'd have to say Karl Malone or Chris Webber. I'd like to be like them one day. Offensively, I have that game in my toolbox, it's just a little rusty.

Hi Danny! I just wanted to ask how your such a great rebounder and if you have any advice for future ballplayers
Danny Fortson at 4:26pm ET
My advice for future ballplayers is keep working hard. Only you can decide what you want to do. The only way to get to the top is to stay in the gym. I try to put myself in a good position to rebound. I lift weights and try to put my hand on the ball every time it goes up.

Do you set a goal for how many rebounds you will grab each night?
Danny Fortson at 4:26pm ET
No. There's no way to set a number on that. Just as many as you can to help the team win.

Hi Danny. Has the new Zone Defence helped or hurt your game?
Danny Fortson at 4:27pm ET
It's actually helped. Really, it hasn't had that much affect. Guys are giving me more open jumpers. I'd like to hit a few more open shots, but mostly it hasn't affected me too much.

What would you do if you were on a scoring slump? Sometimes it happens to me...can u give me some tips please?
Danny Fortson at 4:28pm ET
Keep going to the gym and shooting the ball. Just keep shooting. It happens to everybody. Even Michael Jordan. The key is getting in early to the gym and working on your shot. Keep shooting.

Danny,
How does it feel to be playing this both injury free for yourself and to have a healthy squad this year.
Danny Fortson at 4:30pm ET
Thankful to God. He's helped me to back out here, healthy. After sitting out for a year, you can take things for granted. Now, even 15 minutes makes me happy. It just feels good to be out there playing.
Danny Fortson at 4:31pm ET
Thanks for writing in and giving me the time to answer your questions. I'm going to play as hard as I can and we'll get back on top and get back in the playoff picture. Thanks everyone.
