Exactly 20 years ago today, Earvin “Magic” Johnson made an announcement that would forever change the landscape far beyond basketball. At a press conference in Los Angeles, the Lakers star revealed that he had tested positive for human immunodeficiency virus, better known as HIV. The disease forced Johnson into a temporary retirement and he has since been the leading public figure in the fight against HIV and AIDS, giving a face to a disease that was once considered to be an instant death sentence.
Warriors Executive Board Member Jerry West was then the Lakers General Manager and Warriors President Rick Welts worked in the NBA’s executive office at the time. They reflect on Johnson’s announcement below and discuss how it changed society as we know it.
