Drafted 16th overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1980, Spanarkel led the Mavericks in scoring, averaging 14.0 ppg. Prior to his NBA career, Spanarkel was a First Team Acclaim All American as well as the First Team All ACC First 2000 point scorer in school history at Alma Mater, Duke University.
Spanarkel joined NBA TV during the 2002-03 NBA season as a studio host and will continue to serve as an analyst.
Spanarkel lives in New Jersey with his wife Janet and his four children; James, Bridget, Stephanie, and Andrew.
