SAITAMA, Japan, Sept. 1 (Ticker) -- Without its best player, Spain survived against Argentina and is one win away from being the best team in the world.

Jose Calderon's free throw with 19 seconds left capped a thrilling semifinal as Spain hung tough after a late injury to NBA All-Star Pau Gasol and edged Argentina, 75-74, in the semifinals of the World Championships.

Gasol had 19 points and 11 rebounds but sat out the last two-plus minutes with a left foot injury for Spain (8-0), which wasted a nine-point fourth-quarter lead but defeated Argentina for the 10th straight time.

Spain set up an all-European title game Sunday vs. unbeaten Greece, which stunned Team USA in the first semifinal.

Argentina (7-1) was equally stunned. The 2004 Olympic champions were looking for their first World Championship since the inaugural tournament in 1950 but instead will face the United States for the bronze medal with the knowledge that they will have to qualify for the 2008 Olympics next summer in Venezuela.

"It was an evenly matched game," Argentina guard Pepe Sanchez said. "It all came down to the last shot. Obviously we're all disappointed because we came here to win the championship. Now we'll try to win the bronze medal and do our best in that one."

The Argentines trailed, 65-56, after a dunk by Gasol with 7 1/2 minutes to go but battled back and forged a 74-74 tie on two free throws by former San Antonio Spurs draft pick Luis Scola with 21 seconds to go.

On the next possession, Argentina quickly fouled Calderon, the point guard of the Toronto Raptors who moments earlier had split a pair free throws. He did so again, giving Spain the lead and Argentina the ball with a chance to win.

Spurs star guard Manu Ginobili dribbled upcourt, knifed his way into the lane and passed to the right corner to Chicago Bulls forward Andres Nocioni, who missed a jumper. The rebound was batted around and eventually controlled by Spain, whose players piled on each other as the horn sounded.

"I've had a bad day shooting free throws," said Calderon, who was 5-of-8 at the line. "But the important thing was to make at least one and that, fortunately, allowed us to win." As Spain celebrated, Gasol was helped off the bench by younger brother Marc and both cried. The 7-foot power forward will have X-rays Saturday to determine his status for the championship game. "This is a very bitter victory considering Pau's injury," Calderon said. "Of course we know what we have achieved today and hopefully tomorrow we will get good news regarding Pau's condition."

Spain trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half but fought back to take a 40-38 lead at the break. It still held a five-point lead before Ginobili pulled up with 2:53 left and nailed one of his four 3-pointers.

Former Washington Wizards draft pick Juan Carlos Navarro hit a pull-up jumper and Gasol made a pair from the line after hurting his ankle to rebuild the lead to 73-67. But he sat down for good thereafter, giving Argentina hope.

Sanchez, a teammate of Spaniards Jorge Garbajosa, Carlos Cabezas and Berni Rodriguez with ACB champions Unicaja Malaga last season, halved the deficit with a 3-pointer with 1:29 to play.

Calderon split two free throws and Ginobili made a jumper in the lane to cut the deficit to 74-72 and set up the frantic finish. Raptors rookie forward Garbajosa scored 19 points and Portland Trail Blazers first-round pick Sergio Rodriguez added 14 for Spain, which shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field but hurt itself with 18 turnovers.

Ginobili scored 21 points on just 6-of-21 shooting for Argentina, which lived and died at the arc. It made 13-of-13 3-pointers but just 11-of-34 shots inside the circle. Nocioni scored 15 points and Sanchez added 13, sinking three 3-pointers.
