LONDON, June 7, 2000 -- The Budweiser Slam tournament had always promised to deliver some of the top British basketball talent and this weekend's South of England finals (Saturday) and the National Finals (Sunday) did not disappoint.

On Saturday, the team from Hackney, coached by Jo White, took the top spot in the regional finals against the hotly tipped team from South London. During the afternoon, fans were also treated to a spectacular Slam Dunk contest judged by the Los Angeles Clippers' Michael Olowokandi, the Orlando Magic's John Amaechi and presenter of Radio 5's "Hoops", Fat Freddie. The lucky winner took home a Sega Dreamcast game console. Meanwhile in the Dreamcast game zone the competition was just as fast and furious, as expert gamers tested their skills in their own virtual hoops tournament.

Fans who turned up to watch the free tournament also made the most of the sunshine and the outdoor practice area where many were lucky enough to receive expert NBA advice from Amaechi and Olowokandi.

In the National Finals on Sunday, a closely fought final saw the team from Hackney clinch the championship, winning 35-34 against the South West London team. Hackney player, Steve Ogunjimi, won the MVP Award.

Hackney will now travel to New York to play against some of the best young players in the US.
